I felt rudely excluded from Coarse when passing by the other day. My group inquired about a table, and we were told they only sit groups with reservations. OK... so we asked, can we make a reservation for some time soon, or for right now? No, they explained, they were entirely booked up.Reader, there was nobody at their tables. I don't mean there were some tables free, I mean there was literally not a single table with a single customer in the entire place. Now, dinner service had only just opened. But it wasn't hard to imagine that not all of these tables were imminently going to be filled -- zero people were lining up. Perhaps they were just unlucky enough to have 100% of customers be no-shows??Could there be, I don't know, any cancellations? They wouldn't check. It was super, super weird, antisocial, unprofessional, and off-putting.To be clear, I'm NOT saying they should have given us a table. I'm saying they should have given us the simple human courtesy of checking to see if there were any cancellations or tables available, since it was very, very, VERY clear that zero of their reservations had shown up. Give us an explanation and acknowledge the reality! Instead, it felt like they just didn't want my group as customers, and I had to wonder if there was some element of discrimination based on our not being the kind of customers they wanted in their chic place.
