😒 3/5 - I expected more, but not bad

I’ll start off by saying that while I don’t consider myself some frasieresque elitist who eats at places like this regularly I do have more than plentiful experience eating at a relatively wide variety of highly acclaimed restaurants both in and out of the US (although NYC is a focus point) which I believe would develop in anyone a perspective through which a restaurant like this can be judged. All this isn’t to say it’s a bad place to have dinner; the service was just the right level of attentive and the dining room was elegant while not drawing attention away from the other people at your table. My main issue is with the food itself… I had come here, in part, to impress my companion, but mostly to satisfy my desire to eat here considering the reputation. When you mention eating at Restaurant Daniel in an off-handed manner I’ve found many people both immediately recognize the place and express incredulity at such a prodigal exercise. Needless to say, I had waited for a good time to go for some time. Needless to say, I went in with high expectations. It was in that vain I got the seven course tasting menu. I found the start to be interesting, essentially three mini dishes which felt like a three course meal being served to a fairy tale giant. This was again followed with an interesting foie gras spread which my companion expressed to my agreement had an almost chocolate quality. At this point I am more than satisfied with the meal thus far and somewhat excited to see what comes next presuming the same uniqueness and quality of the first two dishes. Needless to say, I was sorely mistaken. After this my memory is foggy, as some of the dishes seem to just blend together in my memory on account of their frankly bland experience. There was essentially some fish and seaweed with drops of sauce, white truffle drizzled in a white truffle soup with dots of black truffle, another fish thing, bison (which was tasty but was small and the only meat course), and a couple more dishes. This fog isn’t because I wasn’t paying attention, I could describe every course I’d had at Gabriel Kreuther more than a year ago in excruciating detail, but because so many of the courses were uninventive and frankly boring considering the price. Even dessert seemed a bit off, it had a white outer coating and a chocolaty inside that somehow was less bold than the chocolate undertones of the foie gras. The coffee was great though! None of this is to say I disliked the food, but it seems to me like fine dining at its worst. portions so small I got a lobster roll and grand central terminal for the ride back, flavors so subtle they seem almost afraid to make a serious impression, and this je ne sais quois, which felt almost pretentious at times (my companion and I were definitely sure some of the staff were putting on fake French accents) I’ve mostly focused on the negatives, but given the price I think that much is fair. I’d still like to make clear that I didn’t dislike my experience, but the opposite of love is apathy, right?
