Elephant & Castle New York Reviews from The Last Year
Yes, Iโm biased (read on)โฆ.
Let me preface this review by acknowledging that E & C is a special place for me. This summer will mark 50 years of my coming here. I lived just (less than a 100 feet) down the street for about half that time. Consequently, Iโve eaten here literally hundreds of times. To say itโs my favorite restaurant doesnโt begin to cover it. So am I biased? Absolutely. But this is a terrific restaurant. Everything is delicious. Sometimes itโs a subtle thing; you order the grilled shrimp and youโre a few bites in before you realize that this what shrimp is supposed to taste like โ not rubbery, not pallid, but likeโฆ shrimp. Omelettes as well. Back in the 80โs, 95% of the menu consisted of omelettes of various types; they havenโt lost the touch. And the Elephant Burger (a bacon cheeseburger with curried sour cream) is the most underrated hamburger in New York. Is it as good as say, the Black Label one at the Minetta Tavern? Probably not. Then again, itโs not $38. Itโs about half that, although when I first came here it was only $2.75! Plus, a great neighborhood, super easy to reach. Theyโre probably eight different subway lines within three blocks of the restaurant. Is it a once in a lifetime dining experience? Of course not. Just a great neighborhood place that needs and deserves our patronage.
COSY, FRIENDLY โ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Loved this place. A great, laid-back, pub-like atmosphere. Perky, friendly serving staff. We had a delicious special โ tender, lime-marinated chicken breast with cranberry salsa โ and shared an excellent Caesar salad. It felt like a lot of locals and regulars ate here โ it had a real neighbourhood feel - and we chatted freely to two different groups of people at the next table (one left, another arrived), both associated with the NY gay community. Fascinating. The great thing for us was that the E&C doesn't take reservations. Another restaurant had screwed up our booking, so we fortunately ended up here and got a table immediately.
