The service was friendly and the food overall was excellent which isn't surprising judging by the other rave reviews, the Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the fact that their sister restaurant (Shan) is pretty close to me and is similarly very good though the menu is slightly different. They share the same outstanding chili oil and the flavors were pretty consistent between them in terms of the dishes I've had at both (outside of the much better mapo tofu here.) I would say the prices there are a little bit more but the portion sizes are a bit bigger but at both places you have to order rice which is an unfortunate common add-on at fancier spots. To drink, I got the Time Flow/似水流年 consisting of Jiangxiaobai BaiJu, Suze, Elderflower Liquor, and Lillet Blanc and like most other cocktails was pretty reasonable at $15. Consisting entirely of various alcohol and aperitifs, the drink was strong but still delicious and I would recommend it for someone who wants something a little bitter. They gave us some pickled chilies to begin with which was nice while we were waiting. Our first appetizer was the Century Egg with Pickled Peppers/泡椒皮蛋 and it consisted of preserved duck egg with pickled pepper and it was $9. The appetizers here are tiny compared to the main dishes but it will still tasty. Nice mix of sour and heat and I liked it as usual. The Mapo Tofu/麻婆豆腐, a "delightful trio of peppercorn, pork, and tofu" for $16 arrived soon and was a lot better than the location by me and I can see why people order it here specifically. Just a note that for people who prefer a firmer texture for mapo tofu (which is something I prefer also usually,) this is more of the silky variety but it was very good for this style. Only other complaint is that there wasn't much pork either. The Tea Smoked Duck/樟茶鴨 or Zhangcha Duck with "haunting tea-smoked flavor, well-rendered, tender meat" is $18 and was my favorite dish here. You can probably blame my heritage or something for liking such a strong smoke flavor but this basically reminded me of duck salami and I loved it. Very tender meat and the best version of this dish I've had. It was served with some mantou/steamed buns. If you're looking for a mix of said delicious duck as well as some other things to perhaps reduce the smokiness, I would recommend the Sautéed Duck with Ginger/薑爆鴨絲 consisting of "shredded tea smoke duck, sauteed with greens and ginger" for $24. By comparison, the pieces were a lot thinner and the ginger and greens made it lighter by comparison. I preferred the former slightly but they're both tasty. For $23, the Spicy Cumin Lamb /香辣孜然羊 is as it is described; "Fragrant, intense, and full of fiery chile." It tastes very similar to the version at Shan though I would say maybe that the pieces of lamb were bigger there but I think it was a bit more expensive there. Would recommend heavily as well though I would be careful if you're not that big of a fan of spice as this is probably the spiciest dish I've tried here and the cumin flavor is very strong. The Crispy Fish Fillet/香辣魚片 "sauteed with fried red chili, decorated with cilantro" for $21 is also excellent. Very tender fish with a good amount of mala. The Chungking Spicy Chicken/重慶辣子雞 with a "crispy outside, tender inside, plenty of peppercorns and dried pepper" was $22. It's probably a broken record to say that the final dish was also good though I personally prefer the version at Peppercorn Station in Manhattan but there was nothing wrong with it at all.I decided to get their Hupo Ice Jelly/冰粉 for $8. Also known simply as bingfen, this is a southwest Chinese dessert consisting of "cold crystal jelly with brown sugar and peanut, hawthorn powder, and raisin." the version here is lighter than most other versions as I would say that the brown sugar syrup wasn't as pronounced. I slightly preferred the version at Shan but it was still pretty tasty. We left pretty much stuffed at the end of the night being very satisfied with the meal here. I'm not sure if this is my favorite Szechuan restaurant but it's definitely up there and I will be back likely pretty soon. Upper four.
