For once I’m struggling for words as to how to describe this truly magnificent gastronomic experience. Perfect. Contemporary. Imaginary. Classy. Sophisticated. Tantalising. I could go on…
I must first start by saying that the service was impeccable. From the moment booking this, I have been made to feel superhuman. There is nothing the staff could do more to make sure we enjoyed our experience. Also very fortunate that I was able to meet the head chef, and have a glass of champagne with him in the kitchen whilst eating our entrée.
However what followed French cuisine cooked to perfection. Whilst it felt regal, the combination of flavours when read should not go together, it in deed they do. Taking fanciful ingredients along our journey, we were able to dine on snails, oysters, Cornish crab, artichoke, scallops, John Dory, venison, and lashings of truffle. The millefeuille was the best desert I’ve ever eaten. We were lucky to experience Sophie’s signature dishes, which can only be described as heaven, and every course brought pungent flavours that shouldn’t work together, but they just did. And with magnitude. I mean who thinks that oysters should be wrapped in a tarragon jelly, inside matcha tea ice cream and served on spiced beetroot pure as a starter?!?!? Sounds like an overzealous date trying to make an unnecessary impression, however it was absolutely outstanding, including textures that work in harmony.
I can only summarise by saying that this is a perfect experience of classic and contemporary cooking, served with elegance, style and modern innovation. Not suitable for those with simple tastebuds or palates, which is why this complicated dining experience will always stick fondly as one of my best ever culinary experiences, regardless of the expense.
One word - Stunning.
