Oh dear, I have been looking forward to trying 2 Michelin-Starred Anne-Sophie Pic's food for a long time, but the Covid-19 pandemic got in the way. Finally this week we made it and oh, I was so, so disappointed! (Spoiler alert: I have not had Covid, so my sense of smell and taste are normal)
The staff are excellent and attentive, especially the Maitre'D and Sommelier, but I am afraid everything went slightly downhill from there. The ambiance isn't great for a high-end restaurant. I think some thought needs to go into the surroundings. I was sat slightly in the corridor and was repeatedly brushed into by waiting staff and the high ceilings makes for a less than intimate experience, like eating in a bank!
The menu is elegant and you have a choice of 4/6/8 courses with or without wine pairing. We went for the 6 course Journey menu at £130 each without the wine pairing.
As is usual in these high end restaurants we were treated to a few amuse bouches prior to the main performance. One involves a hard shelled but brittle ball which contains a gin/blackcurrant interior that hits you like a "tequilla shot". Indeed my poor non-drinking wife choked on the massive hit of gin, as she wasn't expecting the rather unpleasant experience.
The Green "Jerome Galis" Asparagus consisted of one stem of marinated asparagus with a basil and coffee ice cream that seemed to create an almost "caustic" sensation on the palate, that was, simply, not nice.
The Berlingots are Ms Pic's signature dish, light pasta parcels with a St. Jude cheese filling. Unfortunately, the cooking of mine was variable. Some of the parcels were melt in the mouth (as I suspect they should be), but sadly, some under-cooked and a little "chewy" in texture.
Dover Sole followed which in my opinion seemed to be a little over-whelmed by a smoked beetroot and barberry accompanying sauce.
Cornwall lamb was beautifully cooked (pink) and nicely accompanied by a seaweed and broccoli tartlette.
Saint Marcellin palate cleanser was so-so, but not something I would usually order on a menu. St Marcellin/St.Jude you can see where the inspiration comes from?
Certainly the highlight was the desert - White Millefeuille, that is once again one of Ms Pic's signature dishes and certainly lived up to top billing. Layers of Tahitian vanilla and jasmine jelly with pepper cloud accompaniment.
We chose not to go for the wine pairing as my wife hardly drinks, but took advice from the very knowledgeable and friendly sommelier and chose a moderately priced (£89) but interesting bottle of wine, which along with our bottle of Evian water and a 15% service charge, took our the bill to around £350 for 2 people.
I am glad I eventually have been to La Dame De Pic, but sadly I cannot recommend it to you.
