Le Fantastique San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
ALL the stars to L'Ardoise!!
L'Ardoise is an absolutely charming French bistro in a residential area, an easy block or so walk from the Market-Sanchez muni/bus stop. The food was simply wonderful from start to finish. Appetizers: tiger prawn ravioles and escargot in crispy potato cups. Entrees: coq au vin and duck leg confit. Desserts: Valrhona chocolate fondant and floating island (meringue) in caramel sauce with creme anglaise. Lovely wine selection to go along with anything you choose. Our server, Raoul was truly kind, helpful, and attentive without being over-solicitous. You really should make reservations, but if you're in the area, stop in and give it a shot--they also do takeaway, if you can't get a seat.
Hidden Gem
Loved this very quaint French restaurant which is off the beaten path. Absolutely full with people --- so highly recommend making reservations. We had outstanding service from Oriane and enjoyed everything we ordered.
Outstanding in every regard
We were lucky enough to find this lovely cosy French bistro and ate here twice during our 3 night visit to San Francisco. Everything was perfect. Great atmosphere and impeccable service on both occasions. Food was delicious and came out quickly. Excellent wine list with a very good Cote du Rhone on the first night. Very reasonably priced too. Easily one of the very best restaurants we have visited and highly deserving of its high TripAdvisor rating. A real gem. Highly recommended.
Food is good.
Choice is limited. We liked what we ordered although we ended up going to a second dinner place.
Extraordinary French Food in an Unexpected Place
I've been hanging around The Castro in San Francisco off and on since 1982 (and lived there from 1985-1994) so I was absolutely sure I knew all there was to know, even with the changes that naturally occur over the years. Last week I reconnected with an old friend (since 1974) whom I hadn't seen in 29 years - thank heaven he knew more than I did, and he took me to this extraordinary place - still technically in The Castro, but up the hill and around the corner from all "the action" in an old Victorian building. We were greeted personally with handshakes by the manager - and the evening blossomed from there. The manager and staff are French - and clearly the chef is. The wine suggestions were spot on (and not something I would have chosen) to go with the food - and such food! We tasted a bit of everything, but I have to say that this was the best Coq au vin I've ever had - yes, even in Paris - with the tender meat melting off the bone into a complex wine sauce. And in the French tradition, though the place was PACKED the entire time we were there, we had no sense of being rushed and had literally two hours to sit and catch up on the years we've missed seeing each other. And to top it all off, the cost was extraordinarily reasonable for the food and location. If you like French food this is the place to go - take the Market Street trolley from wherever you're staying downtown, get off at the end of the line and walk a block over and up the hill - it's worth it!

We had an excellent (fantastic!) experience at Le Fantastique as a party of four. The tasting menu was amazing, the atmosphere fun yet refined, and the service was warm and on point. Highly recommend for a special night out!
I want to start this review by saying I had an excellent
I want to start this review by saying I had an excellent time, and the food was excellent all around. We had great service, and since we sat at the bar we chatted with the Chef/owner who was super nice to us. We happened to share a lot of interests so it was a great experience. Let's get the food out of the way: It's an odd restaurant, the main focus is sashimi, and you are given chopsticks, but its not an Asian restaurant. We tasted every fish off the raw fish menu, and they were excellent. We also got a load of their home made bread, and cultured butter, because I was worried we'd be hungry, which didn't end up being the case. The loaf was phenomenal. We also splurged on a caviar dish while delicious was not worth $52 for 2 pieces. Was very tasty though. We then shared 2 large shrimps that were stuffed, very good. Dessert was excellent, great coffee. The music in this place is way above average with everything being powered by McIntosh tube amplifiers, a tube-pre-amplifier, and amazing in-ceiling speakers. They even hook up the same audio (fed from a turntable) to a vintage boombox over the toilet. Overall I had an excellent meal but it was very very expensive. Only real negative was their odd use of the space, it's very empty in the front of the restaurant.
Man I really really wanted to give this place a full on 5
Man I really really wanted to give this place a full on 5 star bc of the service and amazingness of the meal we had, but I'm going with a 4.5 and rounding down to 4 bc we were a little peeved they didn't confirm which tasting menu we wanted and charged us for the more expensive. But alas it was deliciousn Without saying anything else, the stand out dishes were by FAR the caviar dishes. Both the madeline/creme/caviar serve yourself and the eclair, which was one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth! I came here with 3 coworkers/friends last week. We debated what to get heavily, and then ended up getting the tasting menu. My one friend doesn't eat raw fish but they were able to accommodate that. Now the only only reason I'm giving this more of a 4/4.5 stars and not a 5 is because while we didn't specify that we wanted the $135 tasting menu, they gave us the $195 tasting menu without confirming. I think that's a pretty significant thing to charge your customers for without asing (we didn't even realize there were two, we thought there was only one for $135), but alas, it was so amazing we were all very happy with it. The various dishes and my thoughts: -assortment of raw/cured fish: my favorite here was the trout and the chamomile white tail. While trout is usually too salty, they added something quite spicy to it that made it absolutely perfect. Did not love the tuna wrap thing. Bland and meh to me - but I don't love tuna. -caviar dishes: the was a make your own madeline with french creme and caviar, which was delightfully amazing, and maple eclairs topped with caviar, which was one of my favorite things ive had in a long long time! highly recommend. - lobster bisque/brulee: - this was good. Paired with the japanese milk bread, which was phenomenal, it was super yummy. - salad: I can't remember what it was called but it had a creamy dressing and brown sugar bits. SO good! -a5 wagyu: this came with fingerling potatoes and shallots. This was super bomb but I think because I was sooo full (it came second to last) it was not top of the list for me. -desserts: both were great! but was so stuffed! We also got the local wine flight. Again, the only downfall here was that they did not confirm with us what tasting menu we wanted. This was despite us having a longer conversation about the tasting menu and them being able to accommodate our friend who doesn't eat raw fish. The server (has glasses, accent, johnny depp vibes) was truly fantastic, so I don't understand this, but overall still such a great experience.
My Fiance and I's first time experience at Le Fantastique
My Fiance and I's first time experience at Le Fantastique was a VERY good experience. The service, food and ambiance is 10/10. Ambiance: The overall vibe feels casual BUT the experience is fine dining. I really like this atmosphere because it made me feel more comfortable and not forced to be fancy lol, but all the while while I am also getting a quality food experience. There are three different seating choices you can choose from. A more casual bar setting, a more intimate sit-down basic restaurant seating area, and a private area they called the Green Room which was a cozy, more intimate setting perfect for mingling and enjoying your company in a more private setting. We chose the Green Room sitting area and there's enough seating for 4-5 people. It came with 2 lounge chairs and a little chique leather sofa. It was a warm and cozy environment and I adored this seating area. Service: Our servers Jordan and Ociano (I probably butchered the spelling of this name and I'm so sorry lol). They did their best to make our experience above and beyond. Very attentive in making sure we were enjoying the experience, and very knowledgeable about the food we ate. Food: Their menu is short, sweet, simple and to the point. It includes a raw seafood bar where the prices range from $13 - $18. I was told all the fish are imported which is a neat fact and tells me they really care about the quality of their fish. We tried every single raw fish option. From the Hokkaido Scallops, to the Ocean Trout, to the Big Eye Tuna, to the Shima Aji, to the Mr. Lassen Trout and the Hirame and there is no doubt all of the fish are high quality and prepared very well. They were absolutely delicious and prepared to perfection. I ended up ordering 2 more orders of the Shima Aji which was my favorite out of the menu and my fiance ordered 2 more orders of the Mt. Lassen Trout! Those were our favorites. I feel the raw bar is their specialty as the hot plates were good, but not as good as the fish. So if you eat here definitely go ham on the fishes! But yeah, they have a bread and butter section where we tried the Lobster Veloute + bread which I could have eaten more of. The cheese brulee at the top of the dip was an amazing compliment and so tasty. And my favorite food out of the entire course was the Kaluga Caviar topped on a sweet eclair. It is pricey $57.00 for a single bite, but it is truly the best bite you will ever have in your life. It was for me, and I'd buy it again lol. Treat yourself and get this! Overall the experience was awesome. We plan on coming back with some friends soon!!
