My first time, and absolutely not the last. Absolutely exquisite! My colleague encouraged a short meal after a somewhat busy afternoon.. I must say, it wasn’t a short stay at all! Darling menu, and beautiful professionalism. Last week, of course. I decided to book a table once again for April. Marvellous!
We attended an Experience evening showcasing Raffiny Sparkling Wines and Bordeaux’s Chateau Biac’s white and red wines. We shared a table with two other couples which added an added interesting dimension to the evening. Food, wine and service did not disappoint. Michele Roux jnr visited all the tables as did both the wine producers to add to the enjoyment. Hope to go again sometime.

Wonderful fine dining experience
My first visit to this wonderful restaurant. The ambiance is of course, classic French and the staff are extremely knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. The whole team work to make this a unique experience. And then there’s the food which is amazing, with the lamb main course being off the scale. Beautifully cooked. We had an amazing evening all topped off with Michel Roux Jnr himself paying numerous visits to the tables. The staff obviously love working there and that shows in the way they work to ensure a great experience while your there.

It’s not great. It won’t and shouldn’t keep the 2 stars
It’s really not that great. It’s comprehensively stuck in the past and whereas the food is first rate, the service and the surroundings are not. When people note that the Michelin guide is biased towards French restaurants, this is what they are talking about. Just well past its prime in a deep decline. Like a visit to the 1970s. The menu is boring, the wines are boring, it’s boring. 2-3/5 max
In our opinion, this is the best restaurant in London. The ambience is warm snd intimate, the service is impeccable, and the food is world class. My wife and I, who are seasoned visitors to restaurants around the world, have never had a better experience. And, given the overall quality, it’s amazing value for money. Simply the best.

The Biggest Disappointment
My partner and I can honestly say that this was the most disappointing dining experience of our lives. We felt so deflated after our visit, and the dissatisfaction continued for days after. I booked this reservation at Le Gavroche as a Christmas present for my partner. We were both extremely excited beforehand. The decor itself is somewhat dated and we noted the unpleasant forced marketing left on the table, with a little card selling Michel Roux Jr’s book. This was unsavoury and a bit desperate, and the somewhat gauche ornaments on the table were peculiar as well. The canapés and bread and butter that arrived prior to the food were mediocre for an establishment of such prestige. We have had better at dozens of restaurants far away from the supposed level of Le Gavroche. At least the wine we had was very pleasant. However, our main gripe comes in the form of the restaurant's signature dish, the cheese soufflé. The presentation, as seen in the photo, was sloppy and the taste was so salty it rendered the dish inedible. Cream and cheese is hard to go wrong with, but each mouthful I had I could feel my arteries clogging up. We both left the majority of the dish, certain that if we were somehow to stomach it all we'd have had some cardiovascular issue prior to returning home. The main dish of lamb cutlets was pleasant and the flavours combined throughly well. But it lacked that 'wow' factor one would have expected. The depth of the sauce was average. We were planning on having much more; desserts, the cheese trolley etc. but after the deflation of the starter we made our exit. To their credit, they took off the starters but we still managed to pay over £100 for 2 glasses of wine and two dishes. The staff, though, did not seem bothered by our experience, exemplified by the manager who quipped 'well the restaurant is full' with a shrug of the shoulder. The experience made us question the entire Michelin model, and high-level cuisine as a whole. I'm sure this establishment will ride the wave of its reputation just fine for years to come for those with the money. But if you're wondering whether to fork out as a treat and go here, we would recommend you look at other options so you don't leave extremely disappointed as we did.
🙂
Lovely surroundings but not perfection
Maybe a bad time to review this venue having visited a three Michelin starred restaurant two days previously that was stunning. Our greeting was OK but not polished and we were shown downstairs to the very impressive restaurant, which felt very cosy. We ordered some wine and were impressed it was decanted, allowing it to breath. We were less impressed that the two sommeliers topped up our glasses at one point within a couple of minutes of each other and we had to top up our own water. The tasting menu was generally good but only a couple of courses were stunning, leaving us a little disappointed. Maybe a little picky but we found the crockery used was a little uninspired and did not compliment the food well. On leaving it was a little surprising my wife was not helped with her coat and there was no offer to hail a taxi. Some points maybe minor but isn’t this level all about perfection?

Le Gavroche is a classic French restaurant, always was and will always be, which is perfect for me. Traditional dishes and techniques, exceptional and friendly service, great cheese selection, wonderful deserts, fantastic wine list and probably the best soufflé in the UK, whether that be savoury or sweet, it is light as air. Not forgetting the old classic dining room. These are all the things that make Le Gavroche, well, Le Gavroche. I hope the place never changes and will always remain a temple of classic French cuisine. Of course, everyone interested in restaurants living or visiting the UK must visit here at least once in their lifetime…
Absolutely splendid birthday celebration Tres sec vodka martini's at the bar and then a la carte Highlight was turbot on the bone cooked to perfection Bottle of Domaine Bzikot Puligny Montrachet (their last alas) and a Lagavulin to round it off
🙂
Overall a very enjoyable meal, though not quite as special
Overall a very enjoyable meal, though not quite as special as I would have liked for a 2 michelin starred restaurant. We got the Menu Exceptionnel (the tasting menu).FOOD - 4 stars- Cheese souffle was somehow decadent yet light. I don't understand how they did it but it was delicious.- Salmon course had perfectly cooked salmon. The most tender cooked salmon I've ever had. Absolutely delightful.- The cheese cart was amazing. Incredible selection is all I can really say.- The other courses were less special though still tasty.AMBIANCE / SERVICE - 5 stars - About what I'd expect from a 2 michelin starred restaurant. We were a little full at the end of the meal so the staff very kindly served us just the sorbet and packed the rest of the dessert and petit fours into togo boxes for us with detailed instructions on how to best enjoy them the next day.OVERALL - 4 stars

Delectable food, exqusite service
I absolutely keen on visiting this place and finally had the occasion! I had an excellent time, food was up to par, service was top notch and i enjoyed the old timely, yet polished ambience. I definitely recommend this place with both hands!
Where to start ? From the minute we stepped in the establishment we were overwhelmed by the service and he friendliness. The lady at the door offered to take a picture at the front, recognising that this was a special evening for my husband and I. Then we had an aperitif in the quiet and wonderful bar far away from the maddening crowd 😀. When the menus were offered I asked whether the veal choice on the Exceptional menu could be swopped. No problem, it was swopped for turbot. We were led to a corner table, again the service was so attentive. Every dish was matched to a wine. I do not have a sweet tooth so the port and the Sauternes were exchanged for a glass of Pomerol without a problem. Then the Boss himself came out to greet his customers. I spoke to him in French (my mother tongue). Michel Roux was so friendly and humble for such a famous person. He even signed our menu and we were invited to the kitchen which was totally amazing. If you want to feel special head to Le Gavroche, I understand that not everyone can afford it, but for those who can afford one night of pampering in this difficult world I totally recommend ´Le Gavroche’.
Outstanding french food, setting standards for years in London - period! Rachel Humphrey and her team deserve a third star.

Classic French Cuisine at the highest-level...Not one for vapid, foodie thrill-seekers
I was in London on business, and with my hotel being along Park Lane getting to Le Gavroche meant only a few, short minutes by foot...walking through one of the more posh areas of London. The weather was great, so off I went. Le Gavroche's location is first-rate, nestled in a calm side-street and still right there in the middle of the action smack-dab down-town London. However, this restaurant won't win any prizes for interior design or layout. One enters at the street-level floor where the bar is located in a smallish 'welcoming' space and is then guided, in essence, to the building's basement, which serves as the restaurant's seating area. Natural light is in very short supply here, the electric lighting is on the dim side, and the furnishings are rather conservative overall. If you are looking for a see & be seen location or 'something with a view'...then this place ain't it. Undoubtedly, the attention and accolades here go first and foremost to the restaurant's culinary delights. I dined a la carte, and as a starter had the best crab salad of my life. Being spoiled rotten from dining at a lot of top-end eateries around the globe, experiencing that dish was truly exceptional. When those moments come, they are precious, and it is these dishes that leave a clear and lasting imprint in our memories. If tongues could orgasm...well, then that dish gave me multiple tonguegasms. Salmon was my main, and I finished with coffee and some sweets. The dishes are all presented with a tendency towards minimalism. No unnecessary droplets of this, drizzles of that or tossing in yet another hyped 'mystery' ingredient du jour. Le Gavroche focuses on creating classic French Cuisine, pure and simple, and that focus is spot-on. Top ingredients, prepared perfectly and at the highest-level of skill that unlock the flavors of foods as they should...and which combine in perfect harmony. In a word, delightful! This is all about savoring the essence, not shocking the senses. My bill came to around 150 GBP including an aperitif and a few glasses of wine. I felt that that represented exceptional value for money at this food quality level, overall experience & location. Service was also very good throughout...and I particularly enjoyed speaking a bit of German with the Austrian twins who are part of the front-of-house establishment there. In short, I recommend Le Gavroche to all refined foodies who care principally about appreciating classic French cuisine. 'Foodies' who associate dining at this level with adding to their latest Instagram / Facebook 'look at me, look at me' entries or who are 'thrill-seekers' to claim having tasted the latest trends and oh-la-la ingredients are advised to take their vapid culinary values elsewhere...and good riddance to you!
We came with family as this has been our list for a long time, the restaurant is warm and inviting, the staff were friendly without being too over the top which is a plus , as some restaurants staff do not interact with the customers?? We went for the Exceptional Menu , I changed my starter to the scallops which was soo lovely 😊 the salmon , the mushroom parcels were my favourite, the veal was nice but I think needs adjustment but the courses were a good size and a good plus left extra sauce on the table .. the birthday little cake was lovely .. we al enjoyed our visit and we all say that the staff are just as important at the restaurant and food .. Better service than the Dorchester Alain … would’ve liked to met the chefs but the restaurant was busy .. A little note if a birthday a little card on the table from the restaurant would be a nice touch
😍
No doubt they deserve the accolades.
Servers were attentive, professional and discrete. The dining room is a beautiful space. The food and wine list are of legend. We had the soufflé - felt obliged as it is the signature (and we had seen Michel prepare it on 'My Best Dishes'). It was light and sumptuous at the same time - and deliciously complex. My wife had the mushroom ravioli - it wasn't bad, but paled in comparison. Lamb and Veal for the two mains and they were perfectly prepared. Worth the spend. Also visited Gordon Ramsay's namesake in Chelsea during the visit - Le Gavroche was a far better experience for half the cost.

Didn’t live up to expectations
There was lots to like, but it honestly did not feel as luxurious as it should. The food was good, but not outstanding. The prices actually aren’t too bad - but with the sheer number of good restaurants in London, this place just doesn’t stand out. Bread to start was disappointing. The one thing that really did blow us away was the cheese soufflé - exquisite. But my partners scallops, at £48, weren’t that interesting and too drowned by sauce. Mains were served to us the wrong way around - my veal was given to my partner and his lamb to me. Only a minor thing, but the service should have been more on the ball about who ordered what. My veal was a bit tough. Cheese board has a good selection, but the cheeses themselves are large and cold - meaning I had to wait about 15 mins for my cheese plate to get to room temperature. It’s been on my list of places to try for a while, but once was enough.
🙂
Slightly disappointing, but to be fair expectations were very high.
As you would expect, the food was exquisite, every item on every dish was superb. The room is very dark and old fashioned, so better winter venue than summer. Disappointed in the wines and the exchange I had with the waiter serving our wine (not the sommelier) was unsatisfactory. Apart from that the service was flawless, and Michel Roux came out to greet diners, and was as charming as ever. It was our anniversary, which they had picked up from our booking, and they gave us a complimentary dessert item to commemorate, which was a nice touch.
We visited here with some learners, we were greeted and shown to our table. Michel Roux Jr came to our table and spoke to us all. Service and food was out of this world. Friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble. The evening was not just a meal it was an experience. Thank you to all the staff.
Everything I wanted it to be and more. Sublime food, drink and service it was all was perfect. And my friend and I nearly died when Michel actually came over to our table to talk to us! Totally starstruck and in awe! Of course, it's not a cheap night out but actually it cost less than I expected and was very good value. I definitely intend to return.
Fab food, fab wine, extraordinary service. For any special occasion it is definitely worth a visit. I just can’t praise it enough
😍
Stunning! A lasting memory for sure!
One of the finest dining experiences we have had in a long time! Exemplary in every facet. Beautiful ambiance! Service never missed a beat…always scanning around. Very friendly, polished and knowledgeable. We started with a lobster dish with a sauce that was out of this world! We also had a raviolo with braised lamb. Again, outstanding. We shared a grilled prime rib of beef for 2…quite large and absolutely delicious accompanied by a madeira based sauce. We finished with the cheese cart which had about 30 choices. Cheese was sooo delicious and fresh. Excellent wine list! Expensive dinner but well worth it especially compared to the restaurant we ate at our first evening which was a total disappointment and not even close to being worth the money. Highly recommend for an unforgettable evening!

This was a birthday celebration dinner and we weren’t disappointed. From the aperitifs , the soufflé , beef cheek and then the poached pear. The service was attentive without being intrusive. I wanted to visit fir a while and the experience was everything I expected. Fantastic.

5 star prices, but not a 5 star experience
When you’re paying 5 star prices, then I’m expecting a 5 star experience and sadly this wasn’t the case for me. The food was good, although my beef cheek was slightly burnt at the top and there was a little bit of fat in my lamb and sage raviolo. My friend was also disappointed in the portion size of his roast turbot.
I think the reaction from the table overall, says it all for me. There were 4 of us and you know the meal has “hit the spot” when there are mutterings of “wow” across the table - and this didn’t happen. Yes the food was nice, but the comments were more along the line of “lovely” and “delicious” - not “wow”
Service was good, but again, I can afford to be picky when I’m paying about £250 per head, including wine and a gin and tonic at the start. When I’ve eaten the main, I would expect the table to be cleaned and any breadcrumbs brushed away. We ended up doing this ourselves. The waitress did come along and do it, after, but it was too late, we’d already done it ourselves. Also asking for some extra biscuits for the cheese. We had to ask several times, before it was done. I know I’m nitpicking, but as I say, at these prices I think I’m entitled to.
A simple request of some peppermint tea, again didn’t bring any excitement. It was simply served in a tiny glass tea pot. If you dine at the pollen street social (which has 1 Michelin star, whilst this place has 2), a huge herb cart arrives and your peppermint is freshly picked from the cart.
The venue itself is cosy and there is a nice atmosphere downstairs, although the toilets desperately need a major refurb - they were bordering on a “rose and crown” level.
We’ve dined at the waterside inn and the pollen street social and both of these places are far superior. I wouldn’t return, unless there was a major overhaul
