My husband and I had an event in the financial district and looked for a restaurant for dinner. Le Gratin was the Daniel Boulud Jewel that we found. We arrived early for our reservation and visited the bar for a cocktail. Fritz the bartender was friendly, welcoming and suggested fabulous cocktails from the restaurant's speciality cocktail list. My husband loved the bourbon cocktail with the fig syrup and I loved the French martini. It was a great introduction to what was in store for the meal. When we were seated, Clara was our server and she was an absolute piece of charm. She loved the menu and was very knowledgeable about the region's food and wine. We put ourselves in her hands and ordered everything she recommended. Fritz even came to our table and checked on us to see if we liked the second round of his wonderful drinks. Nice touch. The meal was wonderful. My husband adored the duck breast and I had my favorite - sole. Per Clara's recommendation, we started with the chicken liver pate and ended the meal with the apple galette (after all it was Pi day). Both were amazing. The place is beautiful. It reminded us of a lovely little jewel box in France. The service was amazing from the hostess to the person who cleared the table. My husband and I talked about it the whole way home. It ticked all of the boxes for a very enjoyable and memorable evening. The food was amazing as you would expect from one of Daniel's restaurants - but the service was outstanding. Daniel has built a great team at this restaurant. Thanks to Fritz and Clara especially for making it great!!

Came here for a work lunch, because we heard they had a top notch burger in lower NYC. All three of us has burgers, and all were content. Wouldn't go as far as saying it's the best, but decent. (better burgers for $30) The service was good, but it was not busy when we went so a lot of attention was on us - we had 3/4 different waiters asking if we were OK etc, which was kind of annoying.

Excellent French food, smart service, and dimly-lit French bistro vibes. French cuisine is not really for me, but I can definitely see how this would be a lovely place for a romantic, warm and filling dinner. My one gripe is just a personal preference, really: I don't really like heavy lunches, and Lyonnaise food seems to be really heavy on the proteins and fats: even their salad had juicy bacon bits and generous cuts of chicken liver! I would personally go here for dinner instead.
Be the first to ReplyMy experience at Le Gratin in NYC during the winter
My experience at Le Gratin in NYC during the winter restaurant week prompts a balanced 3-star review, influenced by my personal preferences for Lyonnaise cuisine. The prix-fixe menu presented an intriguing selection, and while I ventured into uncharted territory with the TERRINE DE MOUSSE DE FOIE VOLAILLE (chicken liver mousse pate), it didn't quite align with my taste preferences. The dish was interesting, but the limited slices of bread left me wishing for a better balance. It might not be my cup of tea, but it was worth the try. The endives salad turned out to be a challenge for my palate, as the bitter greens might not suit everyone's taste. The TRUITE ROSE TOPINAMBOURS ET CHOUX DE BRUXELLES SAUCE AU BEURRE ROUGE, featuring well-cooked steelhead trout, was the standout dish, proving to be the highlight of the meal. My girlfriend's order, CONFIT DE CANARD ET SALADE AUX LENTILLES VERTE, introduced her to duck confit, and she enjoyed it despite the overwhelming presence of capers. The GรTEAU CHOCOLAT AUX 3 GANACHES dessert was a delightful conclusion to the meal, presenting an amazing chocolate cake. The service was bustling, perhaps due to the restaurant's popularity, particularly with the Asian crowd, as it was filled to the max with patrons from that demographic. In conclusion, Le Gratin offers an interesting culinary exploration with hits and misses. While some dishes may not suit every palate, the restaurant's popularity and diverse menu options make it a worthwhile visit. A 3-star rating reflects my mixed experience, acknowledging the restaurant's strengths while considering personal taste preferences.

Came here a few days ago for Valentine's Day and overall had a good time. Really cute place and with great service that was very fitting for the day. Food was good too - It was good to try some French dishes I don't often usually see at other places. I'd be curious to come to try again in the future.

I wanted to share my recent experience at Le Gratin in the Fidi neighborhood. As someone living in the area, it's disheartening to say that it falls short of the standards one would expect from a French restaurant. If this were in France, it likely wouldn't stand for long. The owner, Daniel Boulud despite being a celebrity chef, seems to prioritize the brand over maintaining quality. The lack of effort in quality control is evident, with most dishes relying on pre-packaged sauces. I feel those giving high scores might not have experienced a real authentic French restaurant. It's a big NO for me !
Be the first to ReplyI booked a table at Le Gratin almost immediately after it
I booked a table at Le Gratin almost immediately after it opened in the spring of 2022, partly because I've usually enjoyed Daniel Boulud's restaurants, but primarily because of its potato-centric menu -- when it comes to comfort food, my wife worships at the altar of the almighty spud, and so I knew she'd be thrilled with a fancy feast of taters in all their finest forms. And our inaugural visit was indeed a memorable meal from top to bottom. For the food, the richness of the Dauphinoise potatoes and moules frites was tamed by big bowls of pristine greens adorned with lump crab and garlic-mustard dressing, with everything washed down by racy, high-acid white wine. And the ambiance blew us away, from the bistro-chic decor to the convivial vibes and spacious booths. It was such an impressive experience that Le Gratin was the first place that sprang to mind when we decided to eschew our Feast of the Seven Fishes tradition and head out on the town to a classy joint for Christmas Eve dinner a couple of weeks ago. And it was as if nothing had changed during the past 18 months -- if anything, the food was even better and the vibes were even livelier. We once again ordered the aforementioned Dauphinoise potatoes and moules frites, as well as a bonkers special of barely cooked scallops with lobster broth, yuzu kosho, sea beans, maitake mushrooms and more. But my favorite dish was a new addition to the menu: artichokes with glazed root veggies. Holy moly, it took some truly brilliant classical cooking technique to make this so extraordinary. If I ate meat, I'd definitely try some of the more adventurous dishes, such as escargot tempura with pig trotter croquettes or the charcuterie (for which Daniel Boulud is rightly renowned). Fortunately, any dietary preferences -- potato-obsessed or otherwise -- will find satisfaction at Le Gratin.
Be the first to ReplyYou MUST do the potatoes, duck, half chicken and spaghetti.
The desserts are the perfect ending. YUM. It was a walk to the bathroom, but worth the excursion. It's like opening a door and walking into a cross between a speak-easy and library. We will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyHostess altitude adjustment please.
..Mistakingly thought I made a resy on this slow Wednesday eve and was happy when I walked in to a not too busy restaurant. Many empty seats.Hostess was like, you have to wait at the bar for 30 minutes before I seat you (in my empty restaurant).I'm like, bye. And had $$ dinner right next door in the same building. You gotta read the room yo. I walked by afterwards and still had many open tables (of course). It's a shame cuz I want this place to be around. Too bad. Great meals last few times.

When the sun goes down, Fidi in Lower Manhattan becomes a much quieter place. Office workers commute home at the end of the day and the streets become dramatically emptier. Tourists generally will make their way uprown for dinner and theater. This gem of a cafe restaurant reminds me of a classier Pastis or a quieter more intimate Balthazar. Bully, bully for Bouley. We had a nice corner table where we were blessed with a nice view of the dining room. I must admit, with the classy digs, I felt underdressed in my plaid shirt. We preordered the month special veal stew. We were surprised when shortly after the bread was placed on the table, our orders came all at once. As often is the case with French cuisine, the dishes were beautifully plated and presented. The bread came in an abstractly sculpted twisted form in a nicely crafted bag?I appreciated how the basmati rice was served on the side of my stew so as to allow the grains to absorb the flavors without feeling overly saturated and soggy. My wife's branzino, as was everything, prepared perfectly with delicate satisfying flavors. The gratin dauphinois comme marie was served in a dish that kept it warm as I finished my stew. The menu described it as Bouley's mother's recipe. I was wondering how great it would be to have this prepared for you as a child growing up. It was shared between the two of us and is a specialty to be savored.
Be the first to ReplyI was raised both in NYC and France.
Le Gratin brought me back to dinners with family. The food was excellent, the ambiance was Paris Bistro and our server Alexander was wonderful. Already made plans to go back!

Food was excellent and the care for the details would justify the cost which is not bad for what you get. My reason for 4 stars is that the coffee (served in a pot) was lukewarm. But the milk for the coffee was heated which I love and reminds me home. And bread was warm as well. Everything we ate was delicious, and even an everyday item such as mashed potatoes were on another level. Three-course lunch for $45 (drinks excluded). The ambiance was charming. The interior and decor are pretty. And I forgot to say in my original review that their portions are nice.

Chef Daniel Boulud has done it again! I'm telling you, this guy NEVER disappoints! Every single dining experience I've had at one of his restaurants has been phenomenal. Le Gratin is on the smaller side, with beautifully elegant old-world decor that still feels cozy. We started with the oeuf mimosa, caviar de truite, thon ร la menthe et olives grillรฉs, and quenelle de brochet au gratin. My only complaint about the deviled egg with trout caviar and pickled onions, was that there were only 2 of them per serving. The pickled onions added a bit of a tartness and the caviar provided the perfect touch of saltiness. The tuna crudo with grilled olives, arugula and mint dressing was bright and fresh, with the olives adding just a bit of tanginess, making the dish more interesting. The star of the group, and dare I even say the entire dining experience, was the quenelle de brochet au gratin. Admittedly, it's not much to look at, but this cylindrical pike dumpling smothered in gruyรจre-mushroom bรฉchamel is the stuff dreams are made of. The dumpling itself was surprisingly light and airy, serving as the perfect vehicle for the decadently rich and creamy gruyรจre-mushroom bรฉchamel. Divine! For entrees we had the pot au feu royal truffรฉ and the magret de canard au poivre vert. To me, the best part about the special was the poached foie gras. It was rich and savory, whereas the braised beef and veal to me seemed to lack the flavor punch I was looking for, even with the truffle bouillon. I will say a redeeming feature of the dish was how tender the beef and veal was. I'll chalk this one up to personal preference. However, the roasted mallard duck breast in green peppercorn sauce left nothing more to be desired! Juicy, tender and bursting with flavor, this duck was perfectly executed. The leftovers were just as delicious the next day for lunch, and I was delighted that it wasn't greasy or overly soggy after a night in the fridge. Overall, delightful experience and I will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyWe went to dinner last night and had a fabulous evening.
Our cocktails were delicious, I got something called Motion d'0r and it was so refreshing and delicious. We had the onion soup, duck, chicken, gratin potatoes, and green beans. The servings were incredibly generous. Our server was also attentive.

Be the first to ReplyWe work in the neighborhood and decided to come during
We work in the neighborhood and decided to come during Restaurant Week for lunch. $45 for 3-course lunch and half our group order off that menu and the remainder ordered steak au poivre. The entire experience was disappointing. The room is quite lovely in the Beekman Hotel, but any specialness ended there. The steak au poivre was served with the sauce on the side. The pepper sauce was heavily boozy and the brandy overwhelmed the other flavors. The steak itself was fine, but nothing to write home about. The pomme frites also were fine, but again nothing special. When we asked to try to alternate wine sauce to the steak, it came to the table congealed and $2 was added to the bill at the end which seemed unnecessary. Those who ordered off of the restaurant week menu got roast chicken and sausages. The highlight was a tasty cauliflower veloute. Nowhere on the menu was Daniel Boulud's mother's gratin potatoes. All in all, very disappointing and it did not live up to Chef Boulud's reputation.

Met a fabulous NY'er here for dinner on a recent trip to the City. We started at the bar for a glass of wine, while we waited for our table to be ready. Once seated, we sipped our wine, enjoyed the ambience of the beautiful space, and perused the menu. I chose the Magret de Canard Au Poivre Vert with glazed vegetables and green peppercorn sauce. My friend decided on the baked cod, with a paprika crust , and seasonal bean fricassee. We shared a side of Gratin Dauphinois Comme Marie which according to the menu, is Chef Daniel Boulud's mother's recipe. Everything we ate, was delicious. Unfortunately, neither one of us had room for dessert. Next time for sure! I was only in NYC for the weekend and therefore only had the opportunity for three dinners. I am glad I chose Le Gratin for one of them. Great company + yummy food = a wonderful experience!

Absolutely perfect! ย I've raised my children in some of the finest restaurants in the world (of course with the understanding you must leave if a child dare acts overwhelmed or frustrated with a situation) ย Now I get the pleasure of teaching my Goddaughter the experiences of life and enjoy phenomenal service and delectable meal. ย Can not say thank you enough to the staff for trusting us to bring in a three year old at 7pm on a Saturday evening! ย Being single Mom's we don't always want a babysitter but to share our lives with our children. ย The food did come out very quickly and the staff was very accommodating to all of our request. Pleasant Evening!
Be the first to ReplyI ate at Le Gratin yesterday to celebrate my friend's early
I ate at Le Gratin yesterday to celebrate my friend's early birthday, as well as her good-bye party. We were very excited as we are huge fans of Chef Daniel and his food, so I made reservations and we really looked forward to dinner. Our bill came out to over $200 with tax and tip and we were so disappointed. There was not a single dish in my opinion that was worth the money. But beyond that, we were really surprised at the quality of the food because it was not what we were expecting from one of Chef Daniel's restaurants. Additionally, while the host and our server were very kind, I noticed that many of the other people, such as the sommelier or managers, went around to other tables to speak to the guests except ours. Additionally, we waited around 20-25 minutes for each of the courses to come out. Overall, it wasn't the experience we were hoping for, especially when we planned on celebrating. We ordered:1. Devil egg ($14) --This was fine but nothing special. Our server and the host raved about this starter but it was just a regular deviled egg, definitely not worth the money.2. Pate with pork, foie gras, sweetbread, pastry crust ($21) -- I love pate but I wouldn't order this again. The best part of this plate were the pickled vegetables it came with.3. Escargot ($24) -- This was the only dish worth recommending. The escargot were battered and fried, and the pig trotter croquettes were so good. It came with a delicious spinach-herb coulis with heaps of garlic butter throughout the dish, and I ate everything off the plate (including dipping their complimentary bread into the sauce)! So unique and very tasty.4. Scallops ($42) -- My friend said she liked it, which is a relief, but it was this baked scallop dish with fingerling potatoes and seaweed butter. i couldn't taste the seaweed butter at all and in my opinion, the scallops were pretty tough/over cooked and fishy. Really not good and for one of the prices entrees, I was disappointed. I also really enjoyed the scallops I had at BouludSud, another one of Chef Daniel's restaurants, so I was not expecting this dish to not only be underwhelming, but just not good.5. Duck breast ($39) -- I didn't even finish this plate. I brought it home as leftovers for my sister to try and she had to spit it out. While it looked like it was cooked perfectly, the duck was tough. The sauce had a really strange bitter taste to it. Unfortunately, the best part of the dish were the vegetables it came with. They were more tender than the duck.6. Fraise melba ($15) -- This was dessert. A shallow wine glass filled with raspberry meringue, Greek yogurt ice cream, strawberry marmalade, and almond. They were kind enough to put a candle and write happy birthday. The dessert was fine but once again, nothing special.7. Gratin ($14) -- This is what the restaurant is named after. Potatoes were undercooked and the dish was under seasoned. But it was a good portion for the price. Not much else I would say.Hopefully, the service and food improves as I really enjoyed the ambience and concept of this restaurant. But I wouldn't come back. I spent time taking really great pictures because I was excited to rave about the restaurant. But the pictures looked better than how the food tasted.
Be the first to ReplyThe absolute worst service.
Ruined our night. Our server, an older gentleman with frameless glasses, white hair, tall was training another waiter. Offered the wine list after we ordered three individual glasses. Didn't even know they offered bottles. Waited twenty minutes for the wine list after he told us there was one and that's when I noticed they have bottles. Why wasn't this offered when we sat down? He dropped my fork and never brought me another one. Had to ask another waiter after waiting 15 minutes. Didn't even know there was a sommelier till halfway through our dinner and had to wait 20 minutes for that. I made eye contact with the server thinking he would come back but he didnt. He just hung out by the register. Our entrees came at the same time as the wine bottle was ready to be served and I asked them to wait to serve dinner till after the wine was served and they didn't even listen. Dinner was served first. Just awful. I can't even talk about the food due to the terrible service. It wasn't even a busy night. Our reservation was one a Wednesday at 9. Just awful, would give it zero stars if I could. Terrible waste of money
