Nom Wah Tea Parlor New York Reviews from The Last Year
On a recent tour of Chinatown eateries we stopped in to Nom
On a recent tour of Chinatown eateries we stopped in to Nom Wah Tea Parlor on the suggestion of my friend Stef. This has been a spot I've wanted to hit for a very long time and I was excited to check it out! Greeted immediately by a friendly waiter as we entered and given a table right away. It was quite busy inside and there were also a lot of takeaway orders coming through as we sat and dined. I started out with a sweetened milk tea (how could I come to a tea parlor and not get tea) that I enjoyed thoroughly. I'm typically not one to drink my calories but I'd order this again in a heartbeat. We started with the pan fried dumplings and the scallion pancakes. Samantha is a big scallion pancake fan so we had to grab those and I am forever on the search for the best dumplings (we also ordered some Xiao long Bao that were being prepared to come after) so we grabbed those as well. The dumplings were cooked exactly how I like them. They were pan fried and crusty on one side and steamed on the other. The filling was good, not great, but overall I'd order these again. The scallion pancakes were incredibly thin, like phyllo dough thin, which is not something I'm used to. I don't like them TOO doughy, but this was quite the opposite. I honestly preferred the scallion pancakes we had earlier in the day at Tasty Dumpling to these, but the dumplings here were better. The Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) came after and they were exactly what I was craving. They were smaller than others I've had in the past but they made up for that in flavor! The broth inside was incredibly savory and delicious and the dumpling itself had great chew and flavor as well. These are in the conversation with some of the best soup dumplings I've had. I would come back here on any trip to Chinatown and be totally happy about it. The food was priced well and tasted good and the feel and ambiance of the restaurant was cozy and felt authentic. Nom Wah Tea Parlor - Didn't Suck!
Soup dumplings were awesome! Had a wait on a Monday
Soup dumplings were awesome! Had a wait on a Monday afternoon. Overall good experience!
Dim sum wasn't anything special.
Pretty average. I like the old feel of the place but food was just only okay. Cash only or Amex only
Restaurant is clean and historical.
Service was quick, food was decent. Soup dumplings were the best! Definitely think there are superior options in the area and wouldn't go back. They are also cash only!
We decided to try Nom Wah after reading an article about it
We decided to try Nom Wah after reading an article about it being the oldest continuously operating tea parlor in Chinatown. While it was ok, and definitely had old school charm, I don't think I'll go back because there are so many better options for food in that area. The dead giveaway was the largely Anglo clientele. We tried the salt and pepper pork chop - tasty but very greasy, and didn't have any chilies; the steamed pork bun; scallion and cilantro dumplings- kind of tasteless; and the shrimp and pea leaf dumplings- winner winner chicken dinner! I will say that the food was a good value (I.e., portion size to cost), and the variety of teas available was impressive. I think Nom Wah might be best for tea and dessert after a meal elsewhere, such as the Taiwan Pork Chop House next door. But if you aren't an adventurous eater or are more comfortable in a restaurant where the menu is all in English, this is a good option.
I recommend this restaurant the best in china town.
We waiting for 30min to come inside. I really like pork su mai is delicious and eggplant so good!and bun I will come back
It can be quite a wait at this overhyped dim sum place.
However, my group of 4 managed to be the first in line today. Even then, we waited for what felt like 30+ minutes outside just to be seated. After being seated and they pick up your order slip, things speed up exponentially. Your food will come so fast that the small table becomes quickly filled to the brim. Food wise, the variety was not as much as more "traditional" dim sum places. Still a lot of food though. However, the dishes were a hit or miss. My favorite were probably the Chicken Feet and Red Bean steamed buns. My least favorite was the Salt and Pepper pork chops. This place is a tourist trap. Worth going once but not worth going another time with Chinese American family.
The oldest dim sum place in Manhattan.
The line is very long though so be warned! We had to wait like around 1.5 hrs for a seat. It is pretty authentic and the food reminds me of my childhood as I would get dim sum with my family during the weekend. The sticky fried rice is delicious. The portion size for the fried rice and the noodles are huge! The price was very affordable it came out to $25/person for a group of 7! Overall, i would come here again.
I will never, ever, return!!!
The worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant. Unfriendly staff, the food was nothing special, with poor hygiene conditions. In the end we were coerced by the employee into paying a high bonus or otherwise told us we would have problems.
This Friday, I was delighted to find that there was no line
This Friday, I was delighted to find that there was no line at Nom Wah. We were seated immediately, and the service was very quick after we placed our order. The dim sum was tasty, and the menu had a wide variety of options. We were able to try all different kinds of dim sum for a very reasonable price. I'd definitely recommend visiting this iconic restaurant.
This place is delicious.
It's just down and across the street from Bowery Ballroom so it's a great location for a pre-show dinner. The portions are fairly large and shareable. The dumpling sauce is amazing so don't miss that! Their vegetarian options are just as delicious and thoughtful as their meat options. The fried rice was a stand out along with the tofu bun! The peach buns really stole the show as a dessert, the lotus filling is impeccable.
Excellent little place
Excellent and fun little place. Normally a queue but goes quick. We had a good selection and different small plates and enjoyed it all. Good buzz in the place and the staff look after you well.
Big disappointment
This spot in Philadelphia was amazing and I heard the nyc branch was better. Unfortunately I was greatly disappointed. The rice rolls with fried dough was stale and mushy, like it was reheated, the shrimp balls still had the intestinal track of the shrimp in it, aka all the poop. Didn’t notice until the last ball… everything else had minimal flavor. They did end up not charging for the rice roll, but always tried to argue that it was how it should be.
Disappointing visit
Recommended by family as place to visit. Sadly it was a disappointment. The food was good but service was poor and unwelcoming. Toilet is a disgrace and doesn't seem to have been cleaned since it opened. Chased out the door for the tip, which was not deserved.
Great dim sum and experience in Chinatown
We visited friends who were local while we were in town and they recommended this place. We try to visit Chinatowns when we travel and love dim sum. This place was great. Good and fast service and great value. The 30+ minute wait on a Saturday was worth it.
More about the history than the food
Dim sum joint dating back to the 1920s. The ambience reflects this. In the heart of Chinatown and steeped in NYC history. Unfortunately, the Dim Sum scene in NYC has now far surpassed the offerings at the Parlor. Suitably hectic atmosphere and fun to visit, just not for the food! Lots of better options around.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
Virtual Name & Email on reservation
Hi Community,
I am new to this site and just recently bought a reservation here. I noticed that on the reservation page, it is booked under a random name and a virtual email address.
I can't find any button to change either the name or the email for this reservation I bought. So, should I just say that random name when I arrived at the restaurant? Not really sure about the procedures.
