Pig and Khao New York Reviews from The Last Year

I loved everything about this place! The food, the art, the service. It was all so cozy and delicious and satisfying for both the eyes and the belly. Although it seems like a small establishment from the outside, there was a good number of seating inside once my party and I arrived. We were able to walk-in and they were able to quickly seat our party of 3. The server was very attentive to us and didn't miss a beat with filling our water. The table was a bit small for the 3 of us, but luckily the food came in waves and our server was able to clear plates as the food kept coming. We started off with sharing the shrimp & pork spring rolls and kare kare brisket dumplings. They were awesome starters and brought me back home with its flavors and textures. Then the Hiananese Duck & Khao Soi came out and OMG these dishes exceeded my expectations! The duck was perfectly seasoned and just melted. It complimented itself well with the crispy rice underneath. The curry in the Khao Soi had just the right amount of kick. We also ordered the coco rice and its sweetness balanced well with everything else. We made sure to clear every single dish and enjoyed every minute of it!
Very friendly staff willing to explain menu options.
This is a place where you share the plates as they come out. Family style. We also has the spicy shrimp but forgot to take a pick. Food comes out one dish at a time so you can savor each dish.

I'm not usually a fan of "fusion" food -- flavors often get muddled and it ends up not tasting like either one of the cuisines it's supposed to represent -- but that's not the case with Pig and Khao. Filipino flavors were not sanitized and came through sharply -- the vinegar, the sweet, the shrimp paste -- and worked well with other Southeast Asian flavors in the dishes like the spicy papaya salad. The best thing we ordered was the sisig: I live in San Francisco where there's no shortage of sisig, but Pig and Khao's version ranks up there with the best. The staff was friendly and attentive and did a great job describing (and pronouncing!) the dishes, even if Filipino wasn't their native language. The restaurant itself is gritty -- small, lots of graffiti as decor -- and there's a 100% chance you'll walk out with your clothes smelling like smoke and spices, but if that's the vibe Leah Cohen wants for her restaurant, I'm there for it.
Seems to be a very poorly run establishment.
Food: For claiming to have a chef from "Top Chef", the flavors were meh. As a filipino don't expect filipino food or any filipino flavors. The sisig and lechon were close but were pretty mediocre as far as filipino food goes. Lechon sauce tasted like the one you buy at the store. Also, sinigang shouldn't be spicy . Sinigang shrimp should be called tom yum shrimp or maybe event honey walnut shrimp. It Has more similar flavors to that. The kare kare dumplings were trash. It was like an overcooked dumpling with nasty brisket in a gross old peanut sauce. We were the only the asians there. Definitely catering to a certain crowd for non authentic fusion food from a hyped up chef. Service: Service was okay while we were there nothing outstanding. Then they claimed we didn't pay the check. Called us with accusations rather than trying to figure out where they went wrong. We have credit card transactions as proof. So is it Poorly trained staff or Poor management? Wouldn't come here again. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Probably will tell you to avoid at all costs to avoid any headaches. Definitely pay with a credit card so you have proof. there's better food and if you want asian fusion there's plenty around that's better.
The service and the food was delightful.
I would recommend this restaurant; especially the "nachos"

I was a little suspicious when there were no Asian chefs in their open kitchen. Sure, I get that everything in Manhattan is expensive due to inflation, but these southeast asian fusion dishes are terrible. Most of the dishes like the sisig and sliders didn't properly showcase the taste of pork. Instead, they tasted burnt and overly oily. Maybe fried rice is different in other Asian cuisine, but to me these chefs did not use day old rice in their garlic fried rice to properly absorb the oil. It tasted soggy and flavorless. In terms of sharing the dishes, good luck. The sliders only have 2, and it was very fatty. The banh xeo was a mess if you tried to cut it. Maybe if they had them in bite sizes it would be better. Not crazy about papaya salad in general but the people that ordered it said it normally doesn't have so much cilantro and mint.
Came here with a friend on a week night.
I made a reservation but it wasn't as packed which was great. I would still recommend to get a reservation esp if you're coming in with a big group. The ambience was cool however the tables are close to others so me and my friend decided to sit at the bar to be able to talk comfortably to each other. The service and staff were great and friendly. If you're looking for authentic Filipino/South East Asian food, then this isn't the place. It is a more modernized take on classics yet the fusion of food was still delicious. We ordered the coco rice, kare kare brisket dumplings, sinigang shrimp, and bellychon. If you don't want to be overwhelmed by the taste of coconut, order jasmine rice. The kare kare was pretty underwhelming for me. However, the sinigang shrimp and bellychon were my favorites. The shrimp had the tangy, sour taste from the tamarind and a bit of spiciness to it. The bellychon was crispy on the outside yet the pork was still tender-melt in your mouth. We also got drinks which were pretty strong so be careful. The food and drinks were a bit pricey but I would definitely order the shrimp and pork again.

Great place for brunch with friends! Definitely make a reservation as space is limited. Service was good, our server was very patient and chill! We did bottomless brunch and had the guava and mango mimosas, both tasted great. My friends and I all ended up getting the Khao Soi, some with chicken and one with Tofu. We also got a side of garlic fried rice. Everything came out promptly and tasted amazing! Perfectly cooked and perfect spice level. Very cute restaurant to take pictures as well. Would definitely come back!
heard a lot of great things about brunch at pig and khao.
i finallly got to try it and i honestly as not a fan. maybe i went too late in the brunch window but the meat was super dry and not the good kind of crispy. the curry was a bit too spicy for my liking and i didn't like the toppings in the bowl we got
10 yrs later- still amazing!
Stopped in on a Saturday evening for dinner. Had that family meal for 3. Great choices, good cocktails, and a great atmosphere. Michael, Michael & Matthew took good care of us. A bit loud...
I came here as a party for 10 on a Saturday night.
I had to make a reservation through their website, fill out a contract, leave a credit card and our party had to do the prix fixe family style. We ordered the green papaya salad, the sizzling sisig, khao soi, belly chon, rice (jasmine and coconut), ricotta donuts and halo halo Fair warning, I can tolerate a tiny bit of spiciness. The green papaya salad, sizzling sisig and khao soi are all pretty spicy (khao soi being the most spicy). All of the flavors are so good though so the spiciness did not stop me from eating it and just sweating through it. The bellychon had really great crispy skin, very fatty and I loved that it came with the three sauces (pineapple, spiced vinegar and liver sauce) that we can put on ourselves. My one critique is that they didn't give enough bellychon. They say they portion it out to the amount of people but it seemed like they provided less for the main entree. Most of us slowed down so that that we could save room for the pork belly, but there was significantly less of it than anything else. For all the appetizers, we got four plates. The bellychon we only got two plates. The ricotta donuts are served warm and the kalamansi custard is a perfect citrus dipping addition Our servers were so nice and very attentive We were seated in the back room/patio and when the room was filled, you couldn't tell that it was a patio, but as it emptied, it did get a little cold. They do have heaters, but it didn't spread too well to our friends in the back corner.
