..We did a lot of research to find the right restaurant in Montauk for our 25th wedding anniversary. We had been celebrating all week, but this was the big night and we wanted it to be nice.In the end, we went with Scarpetta Beach because of the views...It was a tough call because the reviews were not always favorable. But the pictures were nice, so...We put in a reservation, with a note explaining that we were celebrating our 25th and requesting a good table with a nice view.We got to the resort early, and had a nice cocktail on the patio, over looking the sea, and went to see the hostess at the appropriate time. Unfortunately, we were informed that there were only tables available inside (a dark, empty and dreary place at 6:30pm). We were told it would be at least 40 minutes before a table on the patio would open up. We opted to wait and headed back out to the patio for a second $20 cocktail (ea. of course). When we finally got a table, we started with the salmon crudi and a couple of glasses of wine. The salmon was alright but lacked that unctuous, buttery mouthfeel and flavor that I love about salmon, and the 'pesto' was only saved by the sun dried tomatoes. For dinner, my wife had the short rib & risotto appetizer, which consisted of three silver dollar size pieces of beef with gravy, and 1/2 cup risotto. The meat was tender, but tasteless. She commented to waiter that it was pedestrian and flavorless, but he wasn't listening or didn't understand.I had the black bass with pistachio salsa verde. Salsa verde? That's what they called it, but not what I would call it - maybe a chimichurri. The fish was mild and polite (almost not there), and the flavors of the accompaniments didn't really do anything to kick it in to gear.At this point, our waiter made one of his rare appearances to offer desert menus, but we were so tired of being disappointed, we opted to head back to our own resort, and decided we don't need to go to Gurney's again.
