Spicy Moon New York Reviews from The Last Year
The space is smaller than I thought it would be, so I
The space is smaller than I thought it would be, so I definitely recommend a reservation if you can grab one! The tables are super close together and it can get loud, so it might not be the best place for a first date or something. BUT my friend and I were seated at the window side by side, and it was perfect for gossipping. I ordered the dan dan noodles and stringbeans, and both were simply so delicious. The noodles were perfectly bouncy, it was a HUGE bowl of noodles, and they were so peanut-y and sauce-y. They were spicy, but not too spicy-- just enough to feel a kick at the end. I was able to finish the whole bowl and I am still thinking about how they tasted right now. The stringbeans were equally as flavorful, and I cannot recommend both enough. My friend was also GF, and we were told the items with black stars on the menu were able to be made GF!
This is definitely awesome vegan food, but as a non-vegan,
This is definitely awesome vegan food, but as a non-vegan, I didn't feel conscious that anything was missing or an "approximation." It was just really good Sichuan style food. We had the green onion pancakes, steamed eggplant in pepper sauce and Kung Pao tofu (side of brown rice). We saw another table having the Kung Pao and we just pointed and said, "we want that" because it looked so delicious. And it was! We were having a pretty chill dinner vibe wise, despite our spicy tongues thanks to the eggplant. Towards the end of the dinner my friend noticed the waiter seemed a bit stressed about getting us to settle up. I laughed and mentioned that I had read about the "GTFO" attitude another Yelper encountered after being given a heads up that their dining time would be limited to an hour during the weekend. This was a Tuesday and more folks were streaming in, but there was some space still in the tiny restaurant. No one said anything overt to us, but we paid the bill and made for the door. Knocked a star off my review for the rushed feeling, but the food is 5 star.
The food was delicious, service was quick which is good.
However, the attentiveness was heavily seasoned with eat your food and GTFO. My friends and I made a reservation for 6pm and upon arriving I was informed that it's their busy night and they're booked solid and they allot for 1 hour per table so be sure to finish our meal and GTFO by 7pm. A friend called before arriving and the 1 hour was reiterated over the phone. We all made it to spicy moon by the 6pm no lateness. When we were seated we were again reminded of the 1 hour time deadline. The restaurant is small so I get it. By 7 we were wrapping it up and the check was eagerly offered. I would steer clear of this location. The area has so many other vegan options so if you really want to sit, chat, and enjoy your meal either make a reservation at one of the other spicy moon locations OR find a different restaurant.
As a diehard meat lover who will generally not eat at
As a diehard meat lover who will generally not eat at vegan/vegetarian establishments, this vegan restaurant was legit. Spicy Moon captures the Szechuan cuisine perfectly using only vegan ingredients and I have to applaud them for that. It's super difficult to replicate the real dish especially if it has meat in it but this restaurant absolutely nails the exact taste of Szechuan cuisine. Ngl, this vegan place is better than some other Chinese Szechuan restaurants I have been to. Szechuan cuisine is normally greasy so I came into this restaurant with that expectation. Food: Dan Dan noodles with beyond beef: my favorite dish and was packed with flavor! Sesame taste does stick out and was a tad (barely) spicy. Vegetable wontons with chili oil: EXACTLY like pork wontons in chili oil. Greasy but expected since it's oil. Not too spicy but delicious and stuffed. Mapo tofu with beyond beef: EXACTLY like mapo tofu. No other words, just goodness. Char siu shiitake bun: They managed to make the texture like char siu meat and the sauce tasted exactly like char siu. I don't like mushrooms but I didn't even taste it. Excellent execution! Salt & Pepper Mixed Veggies: super crispy batter and I could barely taste the veggies but that's okay because the batter was perfectly fried and salted.
Cute and snug spot with quick service and overwhelmingly
Cute and snug spot with quick service and overwhelmingly good food. The vegetable fried rice with Beyond beef crumbles was solid, as were the scallion pancakes. Ample portion sizes.
Amazing food.
The veggie wontons in chili oil were the best! But the Dan Dan noodles, fried eggplant, and general tso tofu were all excellent too. You can skip the scallion pancakes.
Overall I think Id need to come back to try more things,
Overall I think Id need to come back to try more things, but based on my order I'd give it more of a 3.5. If you don't like oily food, I wouldn't recommend it. I think it's great that everything is vegetarian though. For 2 ppl we got 3 apps and 1 main dish: - chili wontons: these were good! I esp like the sweet soy sauce that goes with it - tofu bun: also good! We shared one, the bun was soooo soft and fluffy, and the filling was flavorful - Brussels sprouts: this took a while to come (well after everything else, and I had to ask about it) and it's very crispy but oily - dry pepper pot with tofu and mixed veggies: when we ordered we said tofu, but the waiter asked if we also wanted to add mixed veggies, I thought why not. I didn't realize however that it would be ALL potato and barely any tofu T_T. There was also some eggplant. The worst part though was just how fried and oily everything was. I thought there would be a lot of dry peppers, but I saw mostly fried batter. It was a lot. What I really wanted to try was the honey walnut edamame, but they said they were out :( some other reccs I've gotten before are the Dan Dan noodles, but I probably won't be back any time soon. Service was great though, and the space is pretty small. You don't really need to make reservations but it can get packed
The food, ambiance and service were all 10/10.
Some of the best vegan Asian food that I've had- all the dishes that I got (which was many) were delicious!
Could the food be any more flavorful? Could the service be
Could the food be any more flavorful? Could the service be any more fun and entertaining. Love spicy moon. I crave and must come back to the village to get my fix.
Absolutely wonderful experience here! I wasn't expecting
Absolutely wonderful experience here! I wasn't expecting much from vegan Sichuan food, considering that so much of Chinese cuisine is based in non-vegan ingredients, but this really blew my expectations away. The kung-pao tofu is a must get. The tofu is fried, so it develops a super crispy exterior (probably the crispiest tofu I've ever had), while still maintaining an amazingly tender inside. The sauce is pretty classically sweet and savory. The eggplant sticks (forgot what they're called) were also great. They're long sticks of thick cut eggplant, battered and fried. A super crispy exterior, and the eggplant is cooked just right, so it has some chew to it, but is still tender enough to easily bite through. They also throw a ton of MSG on top, so it's reallllly umami, which I loved. The mapo tofu was also great. Tasted very authentic, actually quite spicy, and overall didn't feel the "veganess" of it at all. The spicy wontons and the zhajiang noodles weren't as good. The wontons were too sweet for my taste, and the zhajiang noodles weren't super authentic (more just like slightly spicy noodles, not black bean). Will definitely be back to try other dishes here! Wonderful experience.
unpleasant food, and worse service
I'd like to save others from wasting their money and time here. From the moment we walked in to the restaurant, with uncomfortably loud music blaring, they immediately told us how quickly we had to leave. They assured us the food came very quickly, and indeed it did, within minutes. Unfortunately our drinks only arrived as we were finishing the food, so I only wound up drinking about 1/4 of mine since I was done with the meal. They were grabbing dishes away the moment we took the last bite and we were out less than 30 minutes after arriving, leaving us with an unexpected hour to wander around in the cold before the play we were attending. The dan dan noodles tasted great at first, but after a few bites the amount of salt was absolutely overwhelming and I couldn't eat any more. The crispy eggplant tasted only of oil, and the steamed dumplings were disappointingly bland. I ate just a few bites of each and left hungry, which seemed better than eating the food. It was pretty expensive, and I was extremely sorry to have spent my money there. I wouldn't consider going again.
Unsatisfied!
We thought the food was somewhat tasty, but it was heavily saturated in grease. I felt some of the dishes were overpriced for the amount you received. Especially the vegan duck wrap. $16.95 for two bites in my opinion is extortionate. I didn’t decide to leave a tip as the service was extremely poor. The waiter did a check back at the end which is too late. We felt very rushed and the waiter stormed off when we decided not to tip. For this reason I would not return or recommend this restaurant to anybody.
Excellent Vegan Sichuan Restarant in the West Village
The Spicy Moon is an excellent vegan Sichuan restaurant in the West Village. We started off with Vegan Duck Wraps and then had Salt & Pepper Style Tofu and Vegetable Fried Rice. The meal was excellent, We arrived hungry and left full.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Appointment
I was waiting on the transfer for name but it hasn’t happened yet and my reservation is tonight , will it be an issue that is hasn’t changed into my name yet
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Just got scammed!
Thats unfortunate but you can always get your money back if they cancel the reservation.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
