Sushi Taro is a small, intimate restaurant in Dupont that has a variety of unique sushi rolls. My friend and I popped in for Happy Hour and were excited to dive in! The dim lighting and close proximity to the street is beautiful - especially if you like people watching in the city The sushi was tasty - very soft rice and vibrant seafood to match each flavorful bite. Not too salty or overbearing! My personal favorite roll was the Crab Old Bay Roll and the Yellowtail. The service was speedy and very accommodating - specifically when we were not satisfied with our cocktails. Great rolls and a fun experience to share with friends!

Came for their Valentine's Day menu and WOW! They had such a unique and thoughtful menu. Started with a complementary drink. The total course number was seven. Started with a delicious scallop tartare followed by a delicious lobster croquette. The star dish was definitely the personal hot pot with waygu beef. It was cool to get to cook the food at our table. There was also a round of sushi and round of nigiri which featured fresh delicious picks from the chef! To end there was a banana chocolate crepe which was perfectly sweet and had a decadent chocolate dipping sauce. This was a great meal. Definitely pricey but is worth it! Come here for your next big occasion for a treat!

A really awesome spot for great fresh sushi and other dishes! We came a little after happy hour on a Friday and found space at the bar. The bartender was so friendly and helpful and explained the whole menu to us plus their favorites. She also made us yuzu martinis which were BOOZY and a nice little treat to start the night. My favorite dish was definitely the scallop sushi roll. It was fresh, decadent, and flavorful. I also really loved the tempura sweet potatoe, fried octopus with Brussel sprouts, and shrimp croquettes. Everything we ate was fabulous. The plates are on the small side and lean more expensive so if you can come for happy hour that's a great option otherwise it's totally worth it to ball out and enjoy it all. The vibe is pretty lowkey and casual and the aestetic is welcoming and unassuming. Really friendly and chill atmosphere. Excellent place for friends and family. Can't wait to come back.

If you love sushi, Sushi Taro is a must. Truly some of the freshest, high quality, authentic sushi I've had in the district (and probably my life). I went for restaurant week with a group of friends and got to try several of their sushi and non-sushi offerings and loved every single thing. The sukiyaki was incredibly flavorful and the spicy tuna roll was chefs kiss. The sake pairing was so fun and overall I felt like we got a great deal. The service was excellent and attentive Sushi Taro is not cheap and definitely a pricier sushi spot, but cannot recommend it enough for a special occasion. Bonus points for using real wasabi!

I definitely recommend coming here if you are in search of something more intimate and romantic. I loved the ambiance of the overall restaurant, and the service was phenomenal as well. Just a heads up that you'll have to find street parking, which can be difficult at peak traffic hours. We started with the Wagyu Korokke, a seasonal item on the menu, which was delightful. I just wish there were more than 2 croquettes on the plate. The Japanese Sea Urchin was delicious and melted in my mouth right away. While I am not a big fan of blue crab in a roll with Old Bay, I thought the MD shore roll was good [still not for me but my partner enjoyed it!]. As a sushi lover, I loved the variety of the Tokujo Sashimi Set. I felt like we got the most bang for our buck. There were some cuts of fish and other seafood that I had not tried before, so it was an experience within itself. My partner suggested ordering the salt-grilled yellowtail jaw as well and it was so tender and juicy!

A Must-Add to your sushi list. Friendly service. I'm on a mocktail kick and the bartender kindly offered to make me a drink based on my really inadequate description of what I wanted. Phenomenal drink. Likely a one off for the drink, but the hospitality surely is ever going! Delicious sushi and great ambiance. I love the seasonal menus for sushi. The Happy Hour specials are really a great deal for high quality sushi in the city. Come check it out next time you're in DuPont Circle!

tldr: One of the few Japanese restaurants with a comprehensive Kaiseki (set menu including sushi and hot dishes). Sushi is top notch but perhaps not as great as the best omakase shops. However their large menu offers dishes like Sukiyaki, Udon, and Soba that are all high quality. Expansive restaurant with private booths, two person tables at windows, and a large room for large parties. We joined Sushi Taro for NYE dinner and reserved the Kaiseki, which is a set menu that includes chef's choice sushi as well as hot dishes such as sukiyaki. The sushi was very very good, however, I would not recommend this place for having the best sushi. I would recommend this place for their expansive menu, because it's rare to find a place like this that has great sushi but also great hot dishes like sukiyaki. As part of the Kaiseki, the sukiyaki came in a mini pot with a burner. The cuts of meat were high quality, and the broth was very flavorful. They also have udon and soba which all use handmade noodles made fresh every day. The Kaiseki was closed out with lovely desserts: grape ice cream and a Japanese hojicha ice cream sandwich. Despite being very full from the meal, we very much enjoyed eating these desserts which weren't too sweet but had great Japanese flavors. We would definitely return to Sushi Taro and order the Kaiseki, or even try more of their udon or soba options.

Lovely meal with wonderful, attentive service! My family was celebrating an anniversary so we decided to splurge with a visit to Sushi Taro. We of course ordered the Kaiseki Tasting menu and worked our way through what would be a pretty giant and special meal. The food was delicious! Especially loved the takoyaki with brussels sprouts, the mushroom soup (the lotus root dumpling in the soup was a great surprise too), the sukiyaki (half of us upgraded to wagyu. Both meats were fantastic, but the consensus of course was that the wagyu was more delicious), and the choose your own sushi (I'm personally quite partial to eel and fatty tuna so I was glad there was a chance to order it since it wasn't part of the other nigiri courses). The dessert was also lovely! We shared a bunch, with the signature hoji cha pudding coming up on top as the universal favorite. The staff was super lovely and helpful throughout. They explained each of the dishes, kept our water and tea refilled, answered our questions, and even brought up some champagne so we could celebrate. Was a night to remember, thank you Sushi Taro for making it so special!

This place absolutely stunned me!Restaurant appears small on the outside since it shares the same building as a CVS, but wow the restaurant takes up the entire top floor! I was actually surprised that this place was a Michelin Star restaurant! We tried their December Kaiseki Set, which is a 9 course meal! Different courses are switched out depending on the season. It was definitely an experience since this was the nicest sushi I've ever had. I enjoyed trying the different nigiris, LOVED the hot dish sukiyaki with angus striploin, and all the dessert! The sake was exceptional too! The experience lasted almost 3 hours for us ~ time literally stopped in the restaurant haha. Although pricey, highly recommend trying the Kaiseki Set!Service was definitely really great! They really paced out the courses very well, and made sure we were informed about all the dishes!
Be the first to ReplyI ordered multiple pieces of Toro and salmon sashimi.
When the Toro arrived, it had multiple white chewy parts cutting through the fish. When the salmon arrived, the bloodline was left on the slices of sashimi and nigiri. I was very disappointed considering sushi taro is a Michelin rated restaurant. I also ordered the Wagyu beef nigiri, which was seared. Unfortunately, the taste of the meat and the rice was disguised by the taste of butane from the torch that was used.I've lived in this neighborhood for over 25 years and I have not been at the restaurant since before Covid. I have to admit I don't know if I would ever return. I had been craving sushi for weeks and finally decided to make my way over and was completely let down by the quality of food.

If you're interested in the kaiseki (which you should be!), come verrrrry hungry! I hadn't really eaten all day and I could barely finish everything. My thoughts on each course:AppetizersFlounder - Delicate, and served with a delicious miso sauce. Excellent jelly inside (tasted bonito-ish?).Shrimp - The sauce was excellent, but the shrimp was nothing special.Lobster croquette - a little but on the heavy side. But there was a lot of lobster chunks, which I really enjoyed. The lobster sauce was a great touch.SashimiFatty tuna (minced) with salty jelly, chimichurri, and fried onions. The onions provided a perfect crunch to accompany the flavorful tuna and jelly.NigiriJapanese snapper, arctic char, sweet shrimp with fried shrimp head - all very good, loved the beautiful tempura on the shrimp head (which I've actually never eaten before and was very hesitant about but really enjoyed it).The soy marinated tuna was a major standout! For my 3 choice nigiri course, I was able to get anything except wagyu (and only one order of uni allowed). I made the obvious choice and went with 3 pieces of o-toro, which was, predictably, excellent. I've had fattier elsewhere, but this was still fantastic.SukiyakiExcellent! Go with the wagyu. The broth was incredible, both sweet and savory.DessertI chose the "roll cake" with, strawberry, cream, and vanilla ice cream. It was nothing special, but luckily I was too full to eat much of it anyways.Overall, an excellent meal with fantastic service. It was quite pricey, but we'll worth it as a splurge.
Be the first to ReplyI have been wanting to try a Michelin star sushi restaurant
I have been wanting to try a Michelin star sushi restaurant for awhile now! Sushi Taro definitely exceeded my expectations. My boyfriend took me here for my birthday dinner and it was absolutely amazing! We opted for the Kaiseki menu with premium sashimi ($20 extra). Each piece was so delicately made and fresh, it was a great way to try different nigiri pieces from Japanese sourced fish! I loved how we also got the hotpot, sashimi appetizers, croquette & soup to along with it. For the price and quality, it was super worth it. The service was quick, attentive, and well spaced out for 9 dishes. Our server recommended great sake to pair with our meal as well! The restaurant had small booths, tables, and counter space. I loved how intimate the restaurant was, almost like a hidden gem in DC. Perfect for a special occasion, an anniversary, or birthday. Will definitely have to come back and try another month's kaiseki!

I have been wanting to check out this spot for years! My friend and I tried to go for HH one time, but didn't get a spot, and for some reason never tried to go again until recently. Y'all! The BEST sushi you'll find. Okay let me start over, the vibe in there in cool, and larger than I expected. The service was amazing! Our waitress helped us order by giving us some recommendations. She was so nice and attentive! We started with the pork belly, delicious flavor and not too fatty. We then shared the shrimp & veggie and sweet potato tempura which were both amazing. Crispy but not too thick, perfect temperate and texture. We then shared the sashimi and sushi platters. AMAZING quality! I know y'all can tell just by the pictures. I'll be honest, I don't know all the fish we tried but everything was so good and buttery, just melts into your mouth. Make the reservation! Do not skip this spot. It's well worth the money. I can't wait to go back and start experiencing more of the menu.

I am so happy I finally got to cross this Michelin Star restaurant off my list! Ambiance (4/5): Very spacious and much bigger than I thought. They are located on top of CVS which was pretty neat. The decor is more on the traditional side than modern. We sat in one of the booths, which was private and intimate. Food (4/5): We ordered the Jo Chirashi and Sushi Jo both dishes comprised of a wide selection of fish. We were impressed by the fresh quality and execution of the dishes. The tuna roll was average and didn't blow us out of the water. Additionally, I thought it was interesting that they did not serve cocktails. Only beer and wine. Service (5/5): From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by staff. Our waitress was very kind and helpful. She explained the menu to us and we did not feel rushed. I actually got to spend quality time with my partner! Additionally, the food came out in a timely manner. We were full and did not have space for dessert, but our waitress brought out a complementary dessert with a candle for my birthday. This was such a kind gesture! If you have not been to Sushi Taro, I recommend going just to say you've been!

Sushi Taro - known as one of the best sushi experiences in DC and I've been wanting to go for a few years now but just haven't been able to. After finally making it I recommend the trip. First off, yes parking is pretty inconvenient as they tell all customers so be prepared to spend some time circling the block to find a spot unless you get lucky. Walking 5 or 6 blocks in the rain can be challenging. Secondly, yes, kind of an odd location on the second floor above the CvS so be on the lookout. Decor is simple and clean. Larger space with more tables then I thought. We went with the Kaiseki Tasting menu which is $135. Definitely not cheap but for the quality and variety of fresh sushi cuts, it's worth the splurge. It's also quite filling especially when you include the beef sukiyaki with udon noodles as one of the courses. All of the sushi was super fresh and tasty but the toro, the eel, the yellowtail...yum. The lobster croquettes in lobster sauce was incredible. Overall, so glad we made it and look forward to another visit soon. Well worth it!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing return.
Service and quality of food -- great! Fish is always fresh. Presentation is clean and simple. We had the tokujo sashimi, two pieces of santa barbara sea urchin, maguro (tuna) and sweet shrimp, negitoro roll, and then added lobster sushi.Oh my... the tokujo sashimi had so many different kinds of sushi cuts it was almost fun picking what to eat next. The a la carte was a great choice--I loved our choices. We then added the lobster sushi and that topped it off. The lobster was soooo fresh: it comes with cooked lobster meat rolls, raw lobster nigiri topped with assortments, and one lobster butter roll. This was so worth it, but it made me wonder how great the lobster sashimi would be. I have to come back and try that too.

Went for restaurant week and I feel like this deal should not be real, lol. $55 for an amazing four courses and $20 for the sake pairing! We got the sukiyaki which had the most flavorful broth, the tempura which was great, both sushi courses, and subbed in a hojicha pudding which my boyfriend said was the best dessert he's ever had. Overall really great and a wonderful experience!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best sushi meals and experiences I've ever had.
It's not the "fanciest" location, if that is what you desire, but the food is incredible. My family kept ordering more food and every item was a hit. The environment is clean, quiet and service is super. I will try to go back here every time I visit DC!

I came by myself while traveling for work and snagged a seat at the bar at 5:30 on a Thursday (they fill up quickly) and it was just ok. The lobster croquettes were probably the best part (special). They said they only had Japanese uni which is $24 for two pieces of sushi, I had that and ikura sushi and fatty tuna plus edamame. All decent but I wouldn't say it was worth the price.

Sushi Taro3/29/22This night, for the first time, I had a very dear friend join me for the night out. And so his voice is also in my review! His first observation: Frantic jazz bossanova music. And in the bathroom, the Muzak was stop and start with whale songs. I didn't hear them myself when I went, but it was... odd music...We both did the Tasting menu:First course :Mussels, broccoli Rabe, Sun choke, miso mustard wasabi sauce. So much flavor!! Like , just stop with the overload, but really give me more!!!Baby squid with fiddlehead fern and green bean, sesame paste. I don't know what to say. It was tasty. But salty and kinda weird that I was eating a baby squid. But the flavors were so much more than expected. In a good way. Wow. I was not expecting this. So pleasantly surprised!!! A new culinary experience that was truly impressive. The flavor combinations defy description except: just eat it!!! You'll know. Soup:Fish broth clear soup w/ snow crab and scallop cake and Woodear mushroom. Flavorful, delicate, but firm. I have said it before: Japanese soup for the stupid American. But better! Holy god of soup. Just. That. Sushi course that defies description. Yellow tail, olive oil, wasabi stem, edible flowers truffle saltOyster, shallot, fatty tuna, yellow tail, ocean trout, horse mackerel. But damn. My culinary eye. This course was understandingly perfect. Everything just worked!Amber Jack, wild snapper, wild stone bass, Arctic char with cherry blossom Three white fish and then, what?? It was really ok, ok, ok, and then WOW!Duke tuna soy marinated with ginger, striped Jack, sweet shrimp, salmon roe there's just. Damn. Really? Non words. Chan Chan yaki. The miso butter!!! To die for!! Just. Nothing. But. The flaming miso butter. Presentation is spectacular!! Fatty tuna and scallion roll, taco, tamago, unagi.Everything just doesn't stop! It just goes and goes and goes and elevates and elevates and elevates!

Tried the Kaiseki tasting menu (added wagyu nigiri because it's Japanese wagyu, and how could I not?)! It was so good and so worth it. Everything was delicious and had nice timing. I've done a lot of omakase meals recently, and I've noticed with tasting style menus that timing does have an effect on the experience sometimes. I'll add my photos with captions, but let's just say I loved everything. The food, the service, atmosphere is all good. Would highly recommend to friends and family. Just wished I lived here to visit more often!

Be the first to Replyas much as i wanted to really love this restaurant, it
as much as i wanted to really love this restaurant, it honestly is not worth the price. for restaurant week, we picked this place for sushi because it was highly rated and it was a Michellen star restaurant. so you would think any restaurant that has a michellen star is worth it right? think again.when we walked in, the ambiance did have feeling that the food was going to be good. we sat down at our table, then sat, and still sat waiting to be served. finally, after the waitress came and took our order, we thought it would be quick. the menu is a fixed menu. nope...not at all.by the time the first course came, it took no more than two minutes to complete because we were starving. however, those plates sat at our table empty. by the time the main course came, we sat at our table at least an hr, where my wife wanted to order more food. "kitchen closed" did we know the kitchen was closed? did our server tell us last call? NO and NO. we had no notice that it was last call and we couldn't order more food. so what happened? we left the restaurant hungry and upset that a michellen star restaurant didn't have any good service and the sushi was worth the price. why do you need to add soy sauce to expensive nigiri. u shouldn't need to. it should have already been mixed for you. wish we had a better experience, but honestly would never come back. the sushi is not worth the price.
