Sushi Taro Washington Reviews from The Last Year

This review is specifically for the Omakase Counter located in the back room, offering a three-hour seafood journey brimming with innovative and unforgettable experiences. Kudos, Chef!
Nice service and delicious sashimi and tempura.
Comfortable dining area.Always reliable restaurant experience
YUM! It's been a long while since I've been here.
.. the last time was before covid. Back then, the happy hour was 50% off but now it is 25% on parts of the menu. Prices are higher than I remember as well. That is probably the one downfall I would call out. Aside from that, I showed up for happy hour ahead of time and had a gift certificate from a birthday present. I ordered a lot. There on my own after a few tough weeks at work and I was ready to eat. I ordered a whole boatful and a separate plate. Pretty sure it was how much I saw other customers order as a pair... maybe even more. Go big or go home! There were some new items like the wagyu with uni. The wagyu was full price but I was ready to treat myself and helloooo it melted in my mouth. It was delicious. The uni was also good and a delicious touch but not as rich as the Big Mac combo that I like to get from Sushi by M in NYC. I would probably still get it again. The fish overall was fresh. The servers were pretty good but a bit distracted. I think probably because they were also setting up at opening while serving the initial influx of customers. It was not too bad though. I was also super thirsty from baking in the sun outside to wait for happy hour before they opened so was chugging water faster than the average diner. I would come back again but more of an occasional treat.
One of my favorite sushi spots ever! Giving this a 4.
5 because the pork belly appetizers came late but it was amazing. Love the sushi Jo set - the nigiri is amazing quality and literally melts in your mouth. I also really liked the habanero scallop roll.

Hmmm what happened? I've been coming to Taro every time I'm in town for the past 5 years. As often as once a month but I most confess due to injury I haven't been there for a good 7-8 months. The price hike is way overdue I know but a Jo Chirashi went from having the occasional Uni, Amaebi, and often hotate to just nicer cuts of fish. Tokujo Sushi is still good.

Went with a larger group for a celebration and had an excellent experience. All the dishes were wonderfully prepared. Service was very responsive and expertlty delivered, even as our table was a combo of tasting menus and some la carte choices. Reservations for the larger group were a bit tricky, but communication with staff was forthcoming and all went as planned.
Second time back at this Michelin star resto for our date
Second time back at this Michelin star resto for our date night. We got the sushi tokujo which is a selection of 10 nigiri and a complimentary roll. I also got the wagyu sushi which features an A5 grade Japan wagyu beef that has the most succulent texture ever and literally melts in your mouth. It comes in 3 and after each mouth, it left me yearning for more. A must go if you're craving high quality sushi in town.
I had not been to Sushi Taro in several years.
The food, as always, did not disappoint: superb in every way. Every dish was delicious and well-presented. The service, on the other hand, was mediocre. As one example: At some point, our table was a bit messy with bits of food, soy sauce, etc. I expected the waitress to clean it up. She did not. I cleaned it up with two of our napkins, and then placed the dirty napkins at the edge of the table. The waitress came, removed a couple of empty dishes, and left the napkins. The waitress brought more food, but still didn't take the napkins. I had to ask her to remove the dirty napkins and bring two clean ones. Another example: the waitress never asked us if we wanted anything from the drink menu. Again, I had to ask her, after she'd delivered the food, if we could order drinks. This is not five-star service. More like three-star. And not the service you expect when you're going to be paying $300+ on dinner. If you want to know five-star service, book a meal at Le Diplomate, where the waiter will clean the table if it gets messy, and will always be watching to see if anything is needed. But even most diners, in my experience, have better-trained waiters.

We walked into sushi taro not knowing what to expect and had one of the best meals we have had in DC and 100% the best sushi. The first here is so fresh and everything is quality ingredients, even the wasabi which was really important. We loved everything but some of the highlights were the habanero scallop roll, it is spicy but you can take off some of the pepper on top if you don't like very spicy. The fish quality just melts in your mouth. I loved the miso soup, it was fresh and not too salty . The Jo Chirasi we felt was a really good deal and very filling. The sashimis selected from the chef were on a bed of sushi rice and every piece of fish was amazing, the favorite pieces were the scallop, otoro and salmon. The soba was also great, shrimp tempura in the meal were large and delicious. The only thing I would skip would be the wagyu croquettes, they were good but nothing amazing. Service was fast, well paced and they were so sweet. We are looking forwarding to coming back and trying their Kaiseki tasting which changes every month

Fyi this was an older review from when they still had their star...it sat in my draft so a bit late review but wanted to share my experience Not sure why this place has a michelin star. Just the initial engagement with the host alone left me feeling a bit uncomfortable and unsure about Taro. Overall though, Taros was good. The restaurant vibe and decor was nice and modern. The food overall was above average but unfortunately...nothing amazing. The chefs nigiri work was the highlight of the night. Not too big, not too small but just right where the fish to rice ratio was balanced and the whole nigiri piece fits in your mouth nicely. The shari was another key factor that made their nigiri a highlight. A balance of sweet vinegar seasoning along with well cooked and prepared rice. My favorite dish of the night though was their ankimo. It was fresh and very tasty. It looked to be made in house so props to the chef who made it. Other items I had was otoro, sake, zuke tuna, kanpachi, aka ebi (no head was served), hotate, uni, negitoro, negihama...also had a order of their chicken kaarage (which was actually really good). Light crispy batter, juicy dark meat served with a citris like sauce and topped with their house made egg salad. What surprises me and I believe it's a common feedback here is their service. The host is pretty off putting and rude. I am not sure if he knows that but he seems like a guy that doesn't care either. The service was quick but the server had zero personality was not engaging. For a michelin star'd restaurant, the initial host engagement alone might have had me leaving and with the overall less than experience...I have lost a bit of care for the label. Seems that the Michelin bar is set a bit lower nowadays. Overall, Taros is a nice and good japanese restaurant. Minus the host and you have yourself an overall good experience.

Sushi Taro is a small, intimate restaurant in Dupont that has a variety of unique sushi rolls. My friend and I popped in for Happy Hour and were excited to dive in! The dim lighting and close proximity to the street is beautiful - especially if you like people watching in the city The sushi was tasty - very soft rice and vibrant seafood to match each flavorful bite. Not too salty or overbearing! My personal favorite roll was the Crab Old Bay Roll and the Yellowtail. The service was speedy and very accommodating - specifically when we were not satisfied with our cocktails. Great rolls and a fun experience to share with friends!

Came for their Valentine's Day menu and WOW! They had such a unique and thoughtful menu. Started with a complementary drink. The total course number was seven. Started with a delicious scallop tartare followed by a delicious lobster croquette. The star dish was definitely the personal hot pot with waygu beef. It was cool to get to cook the food at our table. There was also a round of sushi and round of nigiri which featured fresh delicious picks from the chef! To end there was a banana chocolate crepe which was perfectly sweet and had a decadent chocolate dipping sauce. This was a great meal. Definitely pricey but is worth it! Come here for your next big occasion for a treat!

A really awesome spot for great fresh sushi and other dishes! We came a little after happy hour on a Friday and found space at the bar. The bartender was so friendly and helpful and explained the whole menu to us plus their favorites. She also made us yuzu martinis which were BOOZY and a nice little treat to start the night. My favorite dish was definitely the scallop sushi roll. It was fresh, decadent, and flavorful. I also really loved the tempura sweet potatoe, fried octopus with Brussel sprouts, and shrimp croquettes. Everything we ate was fabulous. The plates are on the small side and lean more expensive so if you can come for happy hour that's a great option otherwise it's totally worth it to ball out and enjoy it all. The vibe is pretty lowkey and casual and the aestetic is welcoming and unassuming. Really friendly and chill atmosphere. Excellent place for friends and family. Can't wait to come back.
The easiest 5 stars I've ever given.
If you love sushi, Sushi Taro is a must. Truly some of the freshest, high quality, authentic sushi I've had in the district (and probably my life). I went for restaurant week with a group of friends and got to try several of their sushi and non-sushi offerings and loved every single thing. The sukiyaki was incredibly flavorful and the spicy tuna roll was chefs kiss. The sake pairing was so fun and overall I felt like we got a great deal. The service was excellent and attentive Sushi Taro is not cheap and definitely a pricier sushi spot, but cannot recommend it enough for a special occasion. Bonus points for using real wasabi!

I definitely recommend coming here if you are in search of something more intimate and romantic. I loved the ambiance of the overall restaurant, and the service was phenomenal as well. Just a heads up that you'll have to find street parking, which can be difficult at peak traffic hours. We started with the Wagyu Korokke, a seasonal item on the menu, which was delightful. I just wish there were more than 2 croquettes on the plate. The Japanese Sea Urchin was delicious and melted in my mouth right away. While I am not a big fan of blue crab in a roll with Old Bay, I thought the MD shore roll was good [still not for me but my partner enjoyed it!]. As a sushi lover, I loved the variety of the Tokujo Sashimi Set. I felt like we got the most bang for our buck. There were some cuts of fish and other seafood that I had not tried before, so it was an experience within itself. My partner suggested ordering the salt-grilled yellowtail jaw as well and it was so tender and juicy!
Happy hour visit.
A Must-Add to your sushi list. Friendly service. I'm on a mocktail kick and the bartender kindly offered to make me a drink based on my really inadequate description of what I wanted. Phenomenal drink. Likely a one off for the drink, but the hospitality surely is ever going! Delicious sushi and great ambiance. I love the seasonal menus for sushi. The Happy Hour specials are really a great deal for high quality sushi in the city. Come check it out next time you're in DuPont Circle!

tldr: One of the few Japanese restaurants with a comprehensive Kaiseki (set menu including sushi and hot dishes). Sushi is top notch but perhaps not as great as the best omakase shops. However their large menu offers dishes like Sukiyaki, Udon, and Soba that are all high quality. Expansive restaurant with private booths, two person tables at windows, and a large room for large parties. We joined Sushi Taro for NYE dinner and reserved the Kaiseki, which is a set menu that includes chef's choice sushi as well as hot dishes such as sukiyaki. The sushi was very very good, however, I would not recommend this place for having the best sushi. I would recommend this place for their expansive menu, because it's rare to find a place like this that has great sushi but also great hot dishes like sukiyaki. As part of the Kaiseki, the sukiyaki came in a mini pot with a burner. The cuts of meat were high quality, and the broth was very flavorful. They also have udon and soba which all use handmade noodles made fresh every day. The Kaiseki was closed out with lovely desserts: grape ice cream and a Japanese hojicha ice cream sandwich. Despite being very full from the meal, we very much enjoyed eating these desserts which weren't too sweet but had great Japanese flavors. We would definitely return to Sushi Taro and order the Kaiseki, or even try more of their udon or soba options.
Lovely meal with wonderful, attentive service! My family
Lovely meal with wonderful, attentive service! My family was celebrating an anniversary so we decided to splurge with a visit to Sushi Taro. We of course ordered the Kaiseki Tasting menu and worked our way through what would be a pretty giant and special meal. The food was delicious! Especially loved the takoyaki with brussels sprouts, the mushroom soup (the lotus root dumpling in the soup was a great surprise too), the sukiyaki (half of us upgraded to wagyu. Both meats were fantastic, but the consensus of course was that the wagyu was more delicious), and the choose your own sushi (I'm personally quite partial to eel and fatty tuna so I was glad there was a chance to order it since it wasn't part of the other nigiri courses). The dessert was also lovely! We shared a bunch, with the signature hoji cha pudding coming up on top as the universal favorite. The staff was super lovely and helpful throughout. They explained each of the dishes, kept our water and tea refilled, answered our questions, and even brought up some champagne so we could celebrate. Was a night to remember, thank you Sushi Taro for making it so special!

fuyioh! the o toro ! the spicy scallop , the unagi, the uni the everything 5/5 and prices aren't that bad for a place with 3 michelin stars !
You will not regret this place. I guarantee it.
We have been here two dozen times over the last 10 years, and we have never had a single bad dish, bad service, or bad time. Hands down my favorite restaurant in DC, all around. Also, the sushi is fresh and *fantastic*. Do not question coming here. You will not regret it.
Good & expensive food, efficient service.
The food is amazing. It is pricy indeed! sashimi is fresh and agedashi tofu dish is delicious. Service is efficient, but I feel the waiters and waitresses are really indifferent. They are not even friendly, maybe because I look poor, come by myself and didn’t make reservation. It makes me feel a little weird. Anyway, I came to Washington DC for my business trip. I had this great opportunity to enjoy some authentic Japanese food by myself without chasing my little kids :) it is a quiet and enjoyable meal.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!

Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
