Tempura Matsui is certainly a fine, Michelin starred restaurant. Tempura lovers will appreciate the exquisite texture of the fried paste, an extremely thin, tasty and light coating, covering ultra fresh ingredients, BUT, all this comes at an abnormally high price.
There are 3 fixed price menus and I would advise going for the cheapest. The price difference, important, is not justified by what you get extra, noticeably a sashimi appetizer, fresh but not exceptional, that will cost you a preposterous amount of money.
Sitting at the bar (recommended) you can watch the two cooks at work, as they skilfully craft the tempuras right under your eyes.
Yet, the atmosphere is icy, as too often in high-end Japanese places. Obviously, the chefs are not there for exchanging smiles and the lady “Maitre d’Hotel” watching over each of your movements is more intimidating than entertaining.
Good Japanese restaurants in NY are now more expensive than their counterparts in Tokyo and the “de luxe” omakase, popularized by the master Jiro Ono, has inspired his New-Yorker alter-egos who run the same formula, only for a much higher price, although none of them can compare with the Ginza magnificent chef..
Tempura Matsui is a good example of this unfortunate trend. U I had even better tempura in Japan, particularly in Nara old town (meaning being transported in a Kurosawa movie) for a much lower price...
I was told that lunch is a more affordable treat.
