The Publican Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
One of my favorite places in Fulton Market! I've only been
One of my favorite places in Fulton Market! I've only been for brunch but it has been great every time! The bacon is AMAZING, we got the waffle and schnitzel this time. The waffle was nice and crispy. Definitely recommend as part of any Chicago visit, but not the most vegetarian-friendly.
I came here with a party of four.
Getting a reservation was very easy. The moment we were sat we were treated extremely well by our server. We ordered drinks (Negroni was amazing) as well as the bread with pimento cheese, the tikka masala scallops, the hay smoked ham chop, the bbq carrots, and the Brussels sprouts. Everything was prepared extremely well and tasted amazing. No notes on what could be approved. The pimento cheese and the pork chop had a southern flair and were immediate standouts. We asked our server what dessert would he recommend: the carrot cake and the tart. He recommended the tart so we ordered it. Then he sent over both because he thought we should experience both. Absolutely incredible meal and would def come back.
We had a great time at brunch at The Publican.
The potatoes were an amazing side to share. Our server was really helpful and friendly. I wish they had more gluten free options.
My goodness, the sunchoke dish was an absolute stunner.
I've never had sunchoke like that before. Usually you barely taste it in a dish, NOT here. Imagine a small baked potato, but it just tastes like fresh artichoke. I could eat 5 plates of it in a sitting. Easily. I went in for at least 3 helpings of the brussels sprouts, so creamy and flavorful. For being a meat place, they really do the veggies right. I am not a sweets person but they brought the dessert cart by the table after dinner and yeah, it worked. The carrot cake, heavenly. Hint of spice, cream cheese drizzle. Kept some leftover and had with coffee the next day. And the bread. The BREAD. Thick, soft slices slathered with butter. I need a couple more baskets of that, too. Tried the lime lager (Half Acre). Why don't I see this beer everywhere?! It's refreshing and tasty. Service was great, fun seating for smaller parties. I finally see what all the fuss is about.
Great drinks & the oyster happy hour rules.
Service was also very good, but food was a bit mediocre and I would have been a bit disappointed had I paid standard price instead of happy hour prices. Beef fat frites are good but really really rich, schnitzel & sausage were just alright
Revisited Publican after an approx.
six year hiatus. Service was just ok as one member of our party waited 25 minutes for his beer. Waitress kept forgetting on a night that had a 1/2 filled house. Asked about the entrees and were advised that they were big and definitely shareable- WRONG! Small portions were covered in garnishes, bread to cover up small portions. If you want to spend a LOT of Money for slightly above average, small portion foods - this is the place to be! Unfortunate as we were all out for a nice evening and really looking forward to this promise of an excellent experience and got a below average one instead..

Really great brunch here! The portions are generous and everything was really impressive. Food is family style and comes out as ready so it was a really quick experience.

Sirloin was excellent, definitely my favorite dish of the night. Barbecue carrots were also yummy. Started with 6 oysters that were quickly finished. Also got the frites with garlic aoli! Service was quick and friendly. It is very loud, which makes sense given the layout of the dining room and many parties sitting together.
I can't think of a meal that I have enjoyed more.
We got the beard plate, which was fire. Brussel sprouts that was probably the best I have ever had. One of us had ham and the other a sirloin and you couldn't go wrong with either. Staff was kind and made sure everything was amazing. We even got dessert because we enjoy everything so much.

Nice ambiance, good drinks/beer selection, and simple, yet interesting meal options. The espresso martini, the sunchokes and the chefs choice of oysters were fabulous. We had the country steak for our meat and it was average, if anything.
Food was so creative and delicious.
I can't believe we haven't been sooner. One thing I wish I had known in advance, there are private tables and shared communal tables. We were seated in a booth that felt very reminiscent of a pig stall (intentionally). I do wonder how someone with mobility limitations would be able to navigate either the booths or the communal table. Noise level is fairly high. The food was incredible - I don't normally love pork belly but this has changed my mind. It was so perfectly crispy and juicy and flavorful. My mouth is watering just remembering as I write this. The salad was also incredible, I would eat that every day if I could. Everything else was delicious and quite unique, I was sure what to expect with the baked clams but again so tasty. We did the wine pairing which was nice as well.
My first trip here was for brunch on a Saturday morning.
We sat at the bar area. Smoked Salmon Dip was really good-served with capers over hash browns. The Little Gem lettuce was tasty as well. The cinnamon roll with pecans was a great start.
Average food. Limited menu. Lacking
I have to agree with many others. Average at best food. Did Sunday brunch. VERY limited menu. So pay attention online because itβs accurate. No burger. No lunch possibilities. The items are fine. The bacon that you hear raves is actually a thick piece of pork belly. Fatty to the point I just asked the waiter to remove it early. Eggs well done but overall Iβm not returning. Itβs got hype I donβt understand
More good than bad, but disappointed given its reputation and rating.
A friend and I went for an early dinner and had a nice table outside. Our waiter was prompt and we started with martinis and oysters. They were both very good and our waiter was able to advise us well on our oyster selections. We had the side of tomatoes that were DELICIOUS! Super refreshing and unique. The main courses were more problematic. My friend got the swordfish. Overall it was fine, but we did not know it was going to be breaded and the fish itself was very dense, more than normal. The flavor was good. I ordered the branzino and was very disappointed. It is the whole fish including bones. The flavor was off. I didn't eat it. Trip Advisor says this is a Michelin restaurant. It is not. It is an average restaurant in a city that has many. Comparatively overpriced and the atmosphere is nothing to get excited about. The washrooms needed to be cleaned.
Fab brunch
Fantastic brunch with friends and family! We loved the schnitzel and croque monsieur! Great atmosphere. Great service.
Forgettable.
The food here is good if unspectacular. I noted the array of Beard awards on the wall but Iβve eaten around the world and at multi-starred places and thereβs a reason the awards are all years old. Nothing was bad but nothing was new or inventive either. The service needs special mention because it was absolutely mediocre. The waitress tried to talk us out of our entrees, suggesting they were too large. Maβam, Iβll tell you what Iβm ordering and you bring it. If three people want to share three large entrees then just do it. We donβt need a lecture or guidance. When we were done, the staff kept trying to aggressively clear the table. Ok, if the place is packed with a line out the door and you need to turn the table then sure. But taking water and food off the table when youβd place is 2/3 empty isnβt appropriate in anything resembling fine dining.
