Wayfarer Downtown LA describes itself as a boutique hotel but this is just another way of saying awful. This is without a doubt the worst hotel my husband and I have ever stayed in and we have stayed in some dives before. Upon arrival we were actually greeted by polite and friendly staff, it started off initially well but it didn't take long until we hit our first issue. Upon arrival we were informed of a tourist tax which was over a hundred dollars, an expensive tax but we were fine to pay it as we understood this was the case in a lot of places. They were keen to push that the charge included the cost of the Wifi, $25 credit each day towards food and drink in the hotel and fitness classes in the morning. Then they informed us that they were also going to hold $400 from our card that we provided them with until the end of our stay in case we incurred any additional charges. So kind of them to basically take the rest of our holiday spending money and leave us with only the cash in our pockets for the rest of the trip - not a good start. We then headed up to our room, the lobby area is lovely, well designed and open so we were looking forward to getting to our room but we were vastly disappointed. Our room was the bare necessities plus a stupidly designed bathroom. There was nothing in the room other than a bed and odd bedside tables. You don't get a wardrobe, safe, fridge. There is a frosted glass panel between the bathroom and bedroom, so if your partner goes to the toilet in the middle of the night you immediately get woken up. It is great.... During our stay, the Wifi that we were told was paid for as part of the tourist tax continuously didn't work. We were often thirsty in the room overnight due to heat/air conditioning however with no glasses provided or fridge to put a drink in this was a challenge. We did go to the bar in the lobby one evening to ask for some bottles of water for our room to which we were told we could't have any - just not something they provide and advised us to go to the Seven Eleven across the street instead. On top of this, they don't provide daily room service unless requested, not even just a quick pop in to empty the bin bags. We informed the staff of our experiences on the way out and they did apologise and said they would refund the tourist tax as a gesture of goodwill. But of course, here we are over a month later with no sign of any sort of refund. This felt particularly like rubbing salt in the wound. We don't write a lot of reviews but we felt we needed to inform others of this awful stay and advise you to steer clear of this hotel if you can. Although a lovely and modern designed hotel, with friendly staff, the practicality and way it is run overshadows it, equaling in an overall unpleasant stay.
