I've been to Philadelphia a handful of times and I don't know how I've never eaten at Vernick Food & Drink. What a top notch experience, even at the bar. I arrived on a Friday evening at 4:45pm, just as they opened. I was the first one there. The bar filled up pretty quickly but you could totally get a seat and eat there if you don't have a reservation. The bartenders were super helpful in explaining dishes and drinks, they were very friendly. It was wonderful.I started with the rum-based drink [$14]. It was sweet and slightly citrus-y. There was suppose to be black pepper in it, but I didn't really taste any. In any event, the glass was cold, it was absolutely perfect on a warm March day. I love starting a meal with an amouse bouche. It screams elegance. The amouse bouche here was a soup with a cheese gougeres! It definitely enticed my palette. I wouldn't have said no to more cheese gougeres.I had two small plates and a dessert. I probably should not have had a such a filling lunch. Definitely my loss. I had the fromage blanc toast with pickled kumquats [$16]. It is a small plate but it's actually a decent size. The toast was very crunchy and the cheese was gooey and drippy, like a thick cream cheese. The kumquats were a perfect addition of acidity. This was a favorite. Next was the day boat sea scallop [$19], I loved the asian flair to this dish, the ginger and yuzu porridge was almost like a congee but not quite. I was surprised at how big the scallop was truthfully. The scallop was a tad fishy but nothing to complain about. This would be a nice dish on a cold winter day. Lastly, dessert. Dessert was bomb. The milk chocolate tart was mind blowing. I appreciate how it looked like a hostess cupcake! The shell was firm but not hard, I hate when you cut into a tart and it goes flying. The chocolate had a depth to it, it was just rich enough. And that raspberry sauce rounded it all out. Add some pistachio crumble and it was a near perfect specimen. Next time I'm in Philadelphia, I will 100% make a reservation for the full menu or the tasting menu. $96 after tax and tip.
