Not good. Don’t believe the hype.
Sadly overrated. House made pasta (tagliatelle) was entirely over boiled and bland. When asked how everything was I reported the pasta to the waitress who took great and unprofessional offense to my criticism which was truly valid. I was told the pasta was homemade and the consistency is normal. That’s incorrect and patronizing. I have eaten fresh pasta worldwide for years and I know a kitchen error when I taste it. Not good and won’t be returning or recommending based on food and service, not to mention price. Prepared sub par and not handled well at all. Everything else we ordered was fair. An upset.
Be the first to ReplyPretentious restaurant
This is an incredibly pretentious restaurant with average food, and service that is inconsistent. Plus my daughter put in the Resy reservation notes it was my birthday and this was not acknowledged. by this restaurant. Waste of money.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible service. Tasty food.
Good food. Terrible service. Totally incompetent "host" seating people. This place is for tourists who love a little bit of abuse and think it's a NYC experience. And who are impressed that some celebrity ate here last week. The "host" spent the whole time analyzing his iPad (obviously not googling the definition of "hospitality"). He should spend more time hustling to seat people. All the service staff were like zombie sloths. embarrassingly bad service. We sat at the bar in the end. The bartender with the braids was passively nasty and seemed like she was just too cool to be serving us. I'm embarrassed to have brought my out of town friends here. So many super cool restaurants in NYC that actually care about giving great pro-active service

I've been trying to come here the past month or so, but I know their price went up after Taylor Swift was here a few weeks back. We got here at 11:45am on a Friday and decided to try our luck. I took the day off don't judge me. Still a 45-minute wait. I know this feeling all too well (10 minute version). We opted to wait and grab a coffee across the street at Bar Pisellino as I think everyone does while waiting for their res. Get their hot chocolate, it's elite. After about an hour and 2 americanos to the dome the text came through. Our table was ready. BABY WE DONE IT! I order an Aperol Spritz before my butt even hits the seat. This may be controversial, but I just much prefer a Spritz in a wine glass. If I wanted this type of glassware I would have ordered a Negroni. My glassware issue aside, the spritz was delicious and refreshing. For food, we ordered prosciutto (ODE!), Insalata Verde (a must get), Wild Boar Ragu (disappointing), and the Arancini (Good). To be quite honest, I was underwhelmed by the whole experience. I understand that expectations are the root of all heartache, but all the hype mixed with the wait time built a certain amount of anticipation I couldn't help but feel. Maybe it's a me problem. It's me. Hi... To be honest, I have absolutely had better Italian food in the city. Also they charge $3 for bread and olive oil which is just annoying. The crown is heavy. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__
Be the first to ReplyWith great luck, we walked right in!
It was a beautiful day, so outdoor tables were in use, tripling the seating space. So we walked up at 12:30 sans reservations, and were immediately seated. We ordered three veggie options from the salad section, each about $21 and each larger than expected: green salad; carrots; Brussels sprouts. Very filling and yummy. Also bread for $3. Would return!

Bouncing flavours, ambience which combines relaxed with classy and attentive service highlight our ongoing return. And not ever be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyFood is good but not worthy the 3h wait...
On the 28th Oct, we arrived at 5.45 and joined a line which we believed was to get sitted. After 1h30, we were told by a very unfriendly waiter that the line was to get the time for our table. At 9am we walked to the restaurant and were sitted at 9.45, this is absolutely ridiculous and management should think of an efficient system to book. The food was good and the value for money ok too, however the low energy caused by the wait could not let us enjoy. After I left a tip of 9% and one manager (not the waiter) came and questioned me, honestly?
Be the first to ReplyAverage and overrated.
Just because 3 celebrities dined here it does not make it a good restaurant. If the New York Times lists it as an up and coming establishment it does NO mean it is so. If one has been to Italy even the most average of Trattoria, serves better food. Average dishes without much personality do not justify the long wait. The Chef believes that loading dishes with garlic make the dish or the restaurant more authentic. It does not. Forgettable. Will not return.
Be the first to ReplyVery good delicious
The food is delicious, different, very good, the staff are nice and very accommodating , the wibe is good
Be the first to ReplyNeighbourhood Restaurant
Via Carota is a pleasant, rustic, West Village restaurant. Nothing more, nothing less. Sadly, as it becomes more and more overrated, the expectation for it to be more than a local Italian, will make the experience increasingly disappointing. In my experience the staff have always been helpful, patient and charming. The food is traditional and the portions generous but add in the price of the wine list & the restaurant has also become quite expensive. Its no longer my choice for a restaurant but invariably is for many of my friends who seem wedded to it so make of that what you wish.
Be the first to Replywasn't impressed
The drinks were very good and so were the meatball. however the tagliatelle was overcooked and tasted like mush. If you can't cook pasta don't call yourself an Italian restaurant.
Be the first to ReplySerendipity for us... Highly recommended for you :)
In the neighbourhood doing touristy stuff (selfieng at the Friends house) we stumbled upon Via Carota. Pure serendipity for us... But it needn't be for you if you read this. We were lucky, I found out afterwards, our wait for a table was limited to some 10 minutes max for a Saturday lunch. But now I know I would happily wait for an hour or more to be seated here with friends & family again. Andrea was our waitress... sharing food tips, smiles and jokes and we immediately felt at home. If I had known beforehand we were in for some exquisite treats I would have ordered some good wine. However we thought it was gonna be a no expectations quick lunch, so just had some refreshing drinks (I think I had some kind of icetea) and water. So I can't share anything about the wine. But the food... the food is to die for :) A first bite from the Nduja Arancini and I knew it was going to be a great lunch... We shared these with the table alongside of the Panissa and the Carciofi alla Griglia. My main course was one of the daily specials, so not on the menu: Frittata. But I tasted the Carote and Tonnarelli cacio pepe as well and at each bite wished I had ordered these as well. In short when In New York go to the West Village and pray the queu is doable because you don not want to leave New York without haven eaten here. I hate people telling me it's a must. Life is not about must do things. Life is about sharing the good things. So I wanted to share this gem with you so for you it doesn't have to be serendipity. Were I to live in NY, I would be eating the Tonnarelli cacio pepe at least once a week, at least... :)
Be the first to ReplyAn Italian lunch to remember
Very good food, very nice atmosphere. The tables were a little crowded - family style - and the chairs were low to the table. Initially, the menu seemed a little sparse, with only 4 pasta dishes, which is unusual for an Italian restaurant. However, there were specials and the servings were quite large. We were three people and had vitello tonnato, carrots with spiced yoghurt and pistachios, and Brussels sprouts with pecorino, walnuts, and apple as appetizers. The portions were very large and we took home most of the sprouts and carrots. Our main courses were two pappardelle with wild boar ragu and one tonnarelli cacio pepe. The servings were deceptive, coming in smallish bowls, but they were certainly enough, especially at lunch. The pasta was al dente and the wild boar ragu, in particular, was very good. For dessert we had one panna cotta and two zabaglioni with berries. The panna cotta was a surprise, being drizzled with olive oil and orange marmalade. Very tasty. The zabaglioni was served over fresh blackberries and raspberries and was decadent and delicious. All in all, a very good experience.
Be the first to ReplyNice atmosphere but expensive
Nice place, cosy atmosphere! We didn’t have a reservation so we were seated at the bar with was perfectly fine. The service was perfect but the meals were expensive and small portioned. They could use a little more flavour.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing service
Miles was amazing. I came in the other day and had the insalata Verde it was amazing. Miles recommended the salad and he was so helpful. He was also quite good looking and knew a lot about the cocktails. He has a bright future in whatever he does. Via carota is lucky to have him
Be the first to ReplyA great Greenwich find
A great last evening meal in NYC, having returned from Ellis Island and wandered up to Greenwich, we were ready for a drink and supper. Bedford St and Grove St were oozing the Greenwich charm and a queue suggested Via Carota may be the place to go. Wonderful Arancini Well chosen wines Delightful cuttlefish Delicious Tagliatelle A tasty and generous artichoke salad Finished off with a sublime custard and berries and a Manhattan! Thank you New York Thank you Via Carlotta
Be the first to ReplyTry somewhere else, staff would rather not bother.
This is the second time I’ve sat at the bar here and I didn’t like either experience. The bartender doesn’t really have the time of day to answer questions. For starters I got calamari and a mushroom, not knowing each was big enough for three or four people. It would’ve been nice if the bartender would’ve mentioned how big the portions were. Then I had a pasta which was the right size, thank god, the food was good, the wine was good, but the service was unpleasant. There are so many good places in the West Village where they are happy to have you as a customer I see no point of going to a place where people treat you like you’re at the DMV. The food was good but it was not spectacular. I’ve noticed in a few places in New York where places have expanded their capacity with all the outdoor seating now allowed and as a result the service has gone down considerably. Perhaps once one of the reasons it was so bad here I don’t know.
Be the first to ReplyBest service and food!!!
We arrived at 5 pm and they gave us ur table at 5:15 it was a little waiting but it was a really nice aérea so it was really confortable, we had Juan Carlos as the waitress and he gave us a wonderful experience and service! Really kind and gentle!! The food was amazing, i would recommend the Parppadelle and the Tonnarelli, so delicious!! For appetizer the calamari were amazing.
Be the first to ReplyGreat classic Italian restaurant. Very popular and rightfully so!
We got here with my Mom for lunch on early Friday afternoon and the place was packed. It’s a very popular spot and we now know why! The food was excellent, from the perfectly backed bread to fresh olive oil to freshest salad and awesomely grilled octopus. We enjoyed outside lunching with much good vibe and people watching. It’s a special pleasure to eat well and watch beautiful ladies walking by looking hungry! Lol. Enjoy!
Be the first to ReplyGreat dining experience!!
Amazing restaurant! Great location and cutest interior. Highly recommend trying the Negronis on the cocktail menu, the cacio y Pepe, octopus and ensalata verde on the food menu. 10/10 !
Be the first to ReplyGreat new year experience!!
Everything was amazing in that place!! Food, service, drinks, music...
Keep up the good work!!
Happy new year!!
Excellent Italian food and service
A friend who lives nearby introduced me to this bright star of a restaurant. There is outside seating with heaters but, since this seemed too cool, we opted to sit indoors. In all honesty, this was not much better as they had the door open and lots of cold air pouring in so we had to eat with a few layers on. The food and service made up for the chill in the air. There are a number of excellent typical and creative Italian appetizers, salads, pasta dishes, and entrees. The wine list focuses on Italian wines and has some very well selected options from different parts of the country. The decor reminded me of a French bistro. All in all, an enjoyable experience and I will be back. Generally this is a super busy restaurant so reservations are often necessary.
Be the first to ReplyUnforgettable and Wonderful experience !!
Obviously one expects great food from a restaurant with this reputation but the whole experience was just stunning. The reception, staff, setting and service match the beautiful dishes that kept surprising. A very satisfied and enjoyable lunch have here.
Be the first to ReplyTOTALLY OVERRATED!
Food mediocre. Very expensive. Had a waiter named Miles who was abrasive, rude and totally unhelpful when I asked if I could get a salad wout the dressing…a flat, I DONT THINK SO! A person who was clearly on drugs came right up to the outside tables and management did nothing to stop it. Best part of restaurant was the bus boy named Daniel who was helpful and lovely. Don’t bother with this restaurant. All hype and no value whatsoever. So many better restaurants in NYC!

Visiting New York for the weekend I had the pleasure of dining at the bar twice. Shelby was outstanding. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and professional and friendly. I enjoyed the meatballs with pignolis and raisin , also the orata with escarola. I can’t wait to return. Sincerely, Joseph Buonincontri
