Greens San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
These pictures are from two separate dinners: Valentines
These pictures are from two separate dinners: Valentines tasting menu and a regular a la carte dinner. This place is a vegetarian heaven because the staff is very helpful for helping your party estimate how much food is good to order. The ambiance is also beautiful overlooking the water across Fort Mason and the restaurant is incredible spacious.
If you want to get scammed and eat mediocre food, this is
If you want to get scammed and eat mediocre food, this is the place! I would give this restaurant 0 stars if I could. It disappointed in every aspect. We made a reservation for a birthday dinner and were hoping to have a good time but got scammed instead. I will talk about the food first and address the shady things the restaurant pulled after. The food came out lukewarm and the Laksa tasted like day old leftovers. The noodles were broken up in short pieces and stale (tasted like leftover pho that has soaked up all the broth and expanded) and the soup was room temperature. I thought it was a one off but multiple orders were also like this. They had a hard time modifying for someone who had an allergy. We didn't complain about any of this and let it slide. From the start of dinner, before we ordered, we asked the server if we could put drinks on one tab and food on the other, they said it wasn't a problem. At the end of our night, both bills were paid and we left the restaurant maybe an hour later after paying our bill. The next day, we saw the credit card statement increase by an extra $175+ (gratuity was already included in our bill). We couldn't call the restaurant to ask what the charge was about because their phone line defaults to voicemail. Left with no other choice, we had to drive all the way back there only to deal with the most rude and condescending manager, Inna. I've seen a handful of other customer reviews mentioning that they had issues with her. She explained that the restaurant forgot to bill us for certain drinks and that it was *our* fault we left before they could figure that out. Remind you, we left an HOUR after the bill was paid since we were still enjoying our drinks and dessert, so they had plenty of time. She also told us that they were doing us a favor by splitting the bill in the first place because they typically do not split bills (then why did the server tell us it wasn't a problem to begin with?). Again, very condescending. It is not the customer's fault that they didn't realize until a day later they didn't charge the correct amount. Had they gotten in contact with us and explained the situation, we would have been fine with paying extra, but to suddenly charge an extra $175+ on the credit card used to pay with no explanation? that is fraud. Her story changed about 3 times on why they made the unauthorized charge. We asked Inna for the itemized receipt that we signed before leaving the restaurant and that's when the games started. She didn't want to provide it for us and instead gave us the new receipt with the extra charges on it claiming that was our receipt, after politely asking again for the receipt that was paid and signed for that night, we sat at the front of the restaurant waiting for over an hour until she finally came out only to tell us it would take too long to find the original and didn't want us waiting (honestly I knew she wanted us to leave and drop it), she gave us her business card and said she'd email us with the receipt when she finds it. Guess what? She never got back to us, even after emailing her and leaving a voicemail at the restaurant. We had to file a dispute and get the director involved. It was an honest mistake the restaurant made when presenting the bill that night and a more expensive restaurant like Greens should have just accepted their mistake and not blame the customer for "leaving after signing their bill (an hour later)". Unbelievable!
I've been going to Greens for years and it still makes me
I've been going to Greens for years and it still makes me happy every time I go. The menu has far more vegan options than the menu from when I first started eating here (deeply appreciated). This last vidiy was for our 25th anniversary. Our server Chloe took great care of us, brought us a little Prosecco to toast and made the evening very special for us. One wish for the future. Please bring back cookies to accompany tea! After a big dinner, a small sweet offering would be perfect. All our love!
Of my 35 years on this planet this is the absolutely worst
Of my 35 years on this planet this is the absolutely worst service I have ever experienced. I came the evening of Wednesday 2/28 a little before 6 PM with a friend who was visiting and had never been to San Francisco before. We wanted drinks to watch the sunset and maybe order a plate or two share. I told the host (there were 2, seemed like one was training), that we were looking to have drinks only with maybe appetizers. That was possibly my mistake for saying that (I did not realize they did not have bar seating), and the host refused to put us at a normal table and instead told is to sit in a waiting area around that large wooden sculpture and order with the QR code. Menu was VERY limited, we would have preferred ordering from the real menu to share something rather than what was available with the QR code. We ordered 2 drinks, never were checked on or given water. One drink came about 25 minutes later only after I flagged someone down to check. They eventually brought one drink back and it was incorrect. At that point I told the host the problem, who insured me that the correct drink would be on the way - waited another 15 minutes without anything. Asked the host 2 more times (now 45 minutes without anything - everyone around at tables are being served and hearing shaking/cocktail making from the bar), and they ensure us ticket is in and will be a moment. After spending almost an hour without anything we ask them to take the cocktails off our QR tab and leave without having been served anything. Not sure what this was about... never had been so poorly treated. We both look young and maybe a our hair was a little disheveled from sight seeing/walking in the wind but we are both medical professionals and never have been refused to be served like this. This is not how a restaurant should be run. It's too bad as the restaurant came highly recommended from several friends, but I definitely would not be coming back and it's unfortunate that my friend who is not from here had such a poor experience.
I had absolutely despicable service.
To start with we were kept waiting to see our server for close to 10 minutes after we were seated. When our server finally arrived, he asked us if we had any questions about the menu. I informed him that I had food allergies, and he appeared unknowing of the menu, and annoyed with my questions. He was short tempered, and downright curt. He never came back to the table to check on us, until we were done with our meal. The service, by far was the worst that I've ever experienced, and I will never return to Greens.
Instead of 7pm we were seated half an hour later.
It was especially frustrating because we rushed and hurried through the day in order to be there on time--because of their strict policy to give away your table when you're late! It was a holiday, so oh well, they are forgiven for that. They brought us free drinks while we were killing time, so, that was nice. Many couples came and were led to their tables right away. Others had to wait for a long time even though there were many empty tables. I didn't understand their logistics. When our table was finally ready, I gasped: instead of the main dining room which I booked, we were led to a separate room just big enough to fit in a table and four chairs. It was very chilly and just outright sad to sit there. There was an empty table outside this room in the main area, but, according to staff, the place was so 'completely booked', we couldn't sit there. This logic was beyond me. (1 star) Our waitress went above and beyond to serve us (5 stars) and it wasn't her fault that the creme brulee was liquid underneath the crust (2 stars). The food was good yet not really great (4 stars) and I feel the hay days of Greens are over. This was not a great experience. Overrated, IMO.
Wonderful, the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is cost,
Wonderful, the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is cost, pricey restaurant. Also, the bathrooms are very institutional looking. Maybe CCSF can start to subsidize green restaurants that are vegan or vegetarian given climate change and the big dent they are making to help by keeping meat off the menu?
I have been coming to Greens since the 1990s, before I
I have been coming to Greens since the 1990s, before I moved here back in 2001. I am hoping this review gets the attention of the Greens folks because it used to be on my top ten list of favorite restaurants. It is still a very good restaurant. Once upon a time, I was mesmerized by Greens dishes: How did they make all these vegetarian dishes pop in my mouth? It is not quite where I am right now. The dishes aren't quite as tantalizing, but they are still good. We ate at Greens a few months ago and I wondered what happened. It looks like there has been a big shift in the kitchen. The food is very good, but I remember the last visit having a forgettable menu. I miss the chocolate crinkle cookies that were sold at the front counter, too. Still, Greens has one of the most beautiful restaurant settings in the city. This, alone, is still a great reason to make a reservation. Service is still the same, which has always been from Good to Excellent. I still recommend this restaurant. It is still a very good restaurant. I don't think I would add it to the Must Go List to visitors unless they either want a vegetarian restaurant experience or they want a beautiful scenic setting (Or both). I used to tell meat-eaters and vegetarians, alike, that they need to go here. I don't think it would be a top recommendation from me, for meat-eaters today because they would be disappointed.
Overall, the experience was meh.
Reservation at 8:15, got sat at 8:23. When we did, the table had crumbs and spilled water on it. Neither of which are a huge deal, but they started on the wrong foot. That was followed by mediocre appetizers (peaches and papusas). Waitress was great, as was the view, and the entrees were good, but by then, it was too late. Wasn't worth the $100 price tag.
We ordered their potato cauliflower pizza, butternut squash
We ordered their potato cauliflower pizza, butternut squash soup, Japanese pancake, and beet salad. Food was delicious, I would highly recommend the early grey tea cake, it was delightful! I really enjoyed their almond and grapefruit mocktail as well, tastes fresh and floral. The ambiance is very urban with a touch of upscale. Great for small groups or date night. Will definitely come back to try their other seasonal menus.
great food and view, lousy service.
I have been there 4 times. The first two times were great, the last two times the service was slow and inattentive. The waiter pretended not to see us when we kept trying to flag him down. After the salads, we waited for another 55 minutes for the main courses. The server was not exactly rude, but we felt unwelcome there. For a restaurant in this price range,($175 lunch for 2), I would expect much better service. The fact that service was lacking on my last two visits suggests that they weren't just having a bad day.
Great vegetarian restaurant
This restaurant was recommends by locals and what a find. It is vegetarian and we are not but we loved it. Delicious fresh food. Fab wine. Great friendly service. What else could you ask for? Very much recommend.
Disappointing Thanksgiving Menu Experience!
ordered some side dishes for thanksgiving on thursday, november 23, 2023. all of the side dishes were for myself. i also got a dessert which was the apple caramel crumb pie to share. for the price paid which came to approximately $275 including the tax & sf mandate fee of 6,.5 % (health & welfare fee for sf employees), my experience unfortunately fell far short of my expectations with this food. i would not order my next thanksgiving meal here again. l thought the execution & flavors of 3 of the 4 side dishes ordered were not up to what i expected nor did i particularly like the 3 dishes as described below so would not order them again. i went into this having high hopes as i have been someone who has enjoyed some great meals at greens restaurant over the past many years. the cornbread stuffing tasted ok. the texture was "grainy" & not what i expected. the flavor was nothing special & i couldn't really detect any cornbread flavor or any specific ingredients that stood out to me in the flavor. overall a disappointment. the lemon sumac brussels sprouts were ok. a little dry but helped with the addition of the tahini-date dressing that came with it. nothing special here. i love brussels sprouts so again was disappointed. the gochujang & brown sugar sweet potatoes were ok. i was looking forward to trying this "korean-inspired" item described as being "a little spicy." no spicy flavor here...just some sweet potatoes without that much flavor overall. disappointed again. the best side dish for me was the outstanding cranberry sauce. tart, full-bodied, bursting with fresh cranberry flavor, tangy & with the added "kick" of star anise. overall a winner & i loved it! glad i ordered 2 containers so will eat again today, friday, november 24 for the day after thanksgiving meal. have not yet tried the apple caramel crumb pie which will be tried today, friday, november 24. was very difficult to cut this densely topped with crumbs pie. the topping was very hard like a brick & the quarter portion we cut out instantly crumbled all up when we tried to cut it into 4 smaller wedges. will see how it tastes today. ordered 2 bottles of the navarro vineyards grape juice. so far have only tried the white gewurztraminer one. light, flavorful & delicious. did enjoy this very much.
Worth a Visit
We enjoyed Greens. On a rainy night it was filled with urban hipster types and a few tourists (like us). The venue itself at Mason Centre is warm despite being cavernous. Apparently the view is good but we didn’t have a table by the window - and it was dark. The service was exceptional. There was a good wine list too, with many no alcohol options. The food itself was good. Simple vegetarian options elevated. We shared the sweet potato fritters, then both had the moussaka. The latter had many veges, plus a nicely crusted béchamel. The bill for food and 2 drinks came to over US$115, once all the taxes are added. Overall, we enjoyed the experience.
Inventive Brunch menu in a beautiful setting.
Greens is always a treat whether you are a vegetarian or not. Non vegetarians often don’t notice. The view and dining room with its high ceilings , good acoustics, warm woods and nicely spaced tables is welcoming. We were there fo Brunch which had a decidedly Mexican touch as compared to previous visits. Everything was good but coffee was weak. We go to Greens for the location - the food can be 4/5 but the room, easy to park or walk location and the view make it a favorite.
Still great after all these years
Have been coming here almost since it’s opening. While the view and the interior have stayed the same, the food has evolved. I loved it then and still love it. Had breakfast with a very Mexican influence. It’s nice to see a restaurant change but maintain its quality. Only shortcoming was the coffee was a little anemic.
Did Not Miss the Protein.
Most likely I've overlooked this restaurant because it's vegetarian. On a friends suggestion, we met here and I really enjoyed my dinner. Our table, though miniscule, was at the window overlooking the water. We shared a handful of starters with the gluten free accommodations they offer up on the menu. My favorite was the Muhammara. The Broccolini and Johnny Cakes were also delicious. I would eat here again.
Greens - a peaceful and satisfying experience
Their website says that the opening of Greens in 1979, has forever changed the image and appreciation of vegetarian food in America. Recommended highly by the cognoscenti, Greens quite lives up to its reputation. The location brings it great value. Nestled in Fort Mason which is replete with history, with views of the Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, tastefully done muted interiors and the neatly laid out tables outdoor with space heaters that blunt the sharp winds blowing off the Bay, it’s a big thumbs up for the ambience. For the entrees we ordered a Small Plate of Grilled peaches with goat cheese, watercress salad, honey and hazelnuts. The peaches were grilled just enough, without taking away the softness and aroma of the fruit. The goat’s cheese took a little getting used to but the watercress salad, honey and roasted hazelnut brought it all together to a nicety. The soup of the day, chickpea in tomatoes was pure comfort food - nothing new nothing distinctive. The Roasted Heirloom Tomato Pizza with farm herbs and mozzarella was very good. The crust and cheese done to perfection and the herbs and tomatoes both subtle yet rich with authenticity. Chipotle Barbecued Eggplant with summer beans, corn, tomatoes, roasted poblanos and jalapeno cornbread was a bit underwhelming. The eggplant was a tad too dominant, jalapeño cornbread did not really fit in and the roasted poblanos could have had a stronger presence. Yet there was not a single jarring element. The portions are deceptive and we had no space left for dessert. This was a happy thing because we were already looking forward to coming back. With such a formidable reputation, a premium location and an uncommon cuisine, Greens could have been much heavier on the purse. If at all one has to pick a bone it would be that there could have been more on the menu. Exclusively vegetarian restaurants are hard to come by and a few more options would have been welcome.
Best dinner of the trip!
One of the best (possibly THE best) meals we had in California. My non-vegetarian husband was skeptical, but the spring rolls, potato stacks, and wild mushroom Shepherd's Pie were outstanding. The Pinot Grape soda was so refreshing we never got around to ordering wine! Our server was delightful and gave us good recommendations for touring the botanical garden, and the view can't be beat. 11/10!
Terrible place
Terrible service rude supervisor. Unclear instructions while booking, they changed our special day booking to "outdoor". That too, kept us right in the front where it was the most windy, while keeping inside tables EMPTY!!! Rude and unaccommodating supervisor, perhaps had not seen people like us before....

I'm reaching out for some guidance on a recent experience I had with a Resy reservation at 4Charles purchased Appointment Trader.
Upon arriving for my reservation, I was surprised to find that there was no record of the booking under the name provided in my AT purchase. I've already initiated a refund, but I haven't received any updates except the suggestion to check my purchase details and open a refund inquiry.
If anyone has successfully navigated a similar situation and could share their insights, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

There was "no record of the booking"? Could you confirm if there was an online verification link provided along with your reservation (Yes/No?). And if yes, did you check it after making your purchase (Yes/No?).
In terms of successful navigation, I trust you'd get refunded.

The only provided link was an invitation to join the reservation a few days after purchase, with no separate verification link included.

However, upon checking in with the hostname, 4Charles told me they did not have any name for that date, time, or party size.
