The Charter Oak Restaurant St. Helena Reviews from The Last Year
Went back to the charter Oak for happy hour.
They have a good four dollar happy hour beer special, which was I believe the pilsner. It came in a can was the only downside. We got the salad today which felt pretty dry so I had to ask for extra dressing to join it. Everything was pretty good, but not as good as I remembered it from before. Maybe the dressing was different as this one was pretty salty. We got the wings as well, which were huge and delicious and juicy and good quality wings. will be back and recommend this spot for happy hour.
The drinks and food here were very good but I'm here to say
The drinks and food here were very good but I'm here to say Monica was amazing I am so glad she was our bartender/waitress! Me and my 9 month old came in and she helped us find a table when we did not have a reservation (then she taught him how to high-five! What the heck?! It was awesome haha she was very sweet) she made great recommendations for drinks and food. We ordered the stracciatella and caviar, next time I would ask to not have chive oil they put on it but would still probably give it a 8/10. The homemade bread and butter was definitely a 10/10 though, the atmosphere is lovely we sat outside and baby enjoyed the beautiful green and strong lights all surrounding the patio, absolutely will be back and hope to have Monica again!

This place is recommended to us by a friend, and I am so glad we went! It is beautiful both indoors and in their outdoor patio, which has so much greenery around it. Make no mistake, this will not be a cheap meal, but the food was delicious and fresh. We were not disappointed with a single thing that we ordered. The cocktails were also excellent. A couple of us got frose since it was a hot day and they added a Aperol float, which made it extra delicious. Cherry on top, it was kid friendly with a kids menu that my children were very happy with. Looking forward to our next visit!
Overall experience was good.
...the restaurant and bar interior is very well appointed and inviting..the outdoor patio area is beautiful....we had the beef tartar, the vegetables, the fries and sweetbreads... all ingredients were of the highest quality.... The reason for not giving five stars was that we were never offered winelist and the sweetbreads came out barely warm... that said, the sweetbreads were still fine, just not hot. We will definitely go back so put this on your list... Also, they have a great selection of bourbon and whiskey
Second time at the Charter Oak.
We had a dinner reservation at here after a day at the wineries. The restaurant was already quite busy when we got there around 5pm on a Saturday (probably because of summer and the nice weather). The atmosphere was inviting and unassuming. We ordered the raw vegetable dip, this month's wings, the cheeseburger, black cod, and grilled kohlrabi to share along the four of us. Everything was fresh, flavourful, and satisfying. The raw vegetables dip was exceptional, and the soy dip complemented the farm-fresh vegetables perfectly. Definitely a must order. We loved it so much that we ordered another one to share. It was a delicious way to end a day in the wine country.
Had a very enjoyable dinner but here is my home chef review.
The Samolia was lovely as were the bussers and servers, however we requsted olive oil for he bread and id not get it. The grilled avacodo was yummy but half was not ripe. Our cesar for the table did not come out prior to our meal and we had to remind them. I had wanted to order a cocktail and they never came back to take order. Enjoed a beautiful botte of Flowers pinot that we brought and a big thumbs up that they do not charge a corkage on th first bottle. The bread is out of this world. We had the lamb which had a perfect cook and wonderful sauce. The Black Cod was also cooked perfectly but the sauce was so over salted we had to scrape it off. Inexcusable in my humble opion. Chocolate cream brulee was fab! I was a little disappointed but would give them another shot.
Ideally, I'd give this place a 3.
5/5. The Charter Oak offers a beautiful setting and a menu that showcases high-quality ingredients. While the experience has its strong points, a few inconsistencies kept it from being a slam dunk. The restaurant's interior boasts a grand atmosphere. High ceilings and an open layout create a sense of airiness, while exposed brick (on the outside and plush seating add a touch of warmth. The dedicated meat-cooking area allows guests a glimpse of the culinary action and adds a touch of visual intrigue. We opted for a selection of dishes to share: the signature Charter Oak bread, the Flannery 14-day dry-aged ribeye with brown butter hollandaise, the black roasted cod with daylily pesto, and the upside-down cake for dessert. The bread and house-cultured butter were a clear winner. Warm and crusty bread paired perfectly with the rich, salty butter. However, the sides served with the bread were a bit overdone, offering a touch of unintended bitterness. The Flannery ribeye was a huge letdown. While cooked to a good degree overall, the silver skin remained somewhat tough, making parts of the meat chewy. Additionally, the lack of pre-emptive inquiry about our preferred doneness felt like a missed opportunity. The richness of the meat could have benefited from a touch more salt to complement the tangy brown butter hollandaise. For being the most expensive dish on the menu, this was a major letdown. The black roasted cod, on the other hand, was a triumph. The fish itself was cooked perfectly - crispy skin gave way to a juicy and delicate interior, expertly deboned for a seamless dining experience. The citrusy daylily pesto complemented the fish beautifully. The upside-down cake fell a bit short. While the cake itself was alright, the tartness of the yogurt overpowered the sweetness of the cake, resulting in an unbalanced flavor profile. The service was efficient and friendly. Our meals arrived promptly, and our server was attentive throughout the evening. However, neglecting to ask about our preferred doneness for the ribeye felt like a minor oversight in an otherwise attentive experience. The Charter Oak offers a beautiful dining experience in Napa Valley. The stunning ambiance, high-quality ingredients, and fast service make it a strong contender. However, some inconsistencies with the steak and the imbalance in the dessert detracted from a perfect experience. For those seeking a stylish setting with delicious, well-sourced options, The Charter Oak is still worth a visit but maybe steer away from the ribeye.
Comfortable elegant environment to enjoy time with
Comfortable elegant environment to enjoy time with relatives and eat delicious food! We tried the cinnamon rolls and the frosting was similar to frosting on carrot cake, but creamier and just the right amount of sweetness. Definitely worth ordering The Black Apple Butter Tart always a favorite and one we order every time we are here, while the Chocolate Hearth Burnt Cream topped with cocoa nibs was okay. This was a chocolate crĆØme BrĆ»lĆ©e, but was not a memorable dessert for me because I thought it could be a bit sweeter, but other members of the group enjoyed it. LITTLE GEMS SALAD with yellow miso Caesar dressing. Our salad appeared to have nasturtium flowers and as well as some crunchy toppings that tasted like toasted crushed sour dough bread. We couldn't flag down a waiter to verify this. We really enjoyed this salad, the dressing and the freshness of the lettuce. It was a delicious version of a Caesar Salad . ALBACORE GARDINIERA with haricot vert. kalamata olive. cipollini onion was absolutely delicious! It was a great accompaniment eaten to the Charter Oak bread! CHARTER OAK BREAD .. small 8, large 16 house-cultured butter. BEST sourdough bread ever! We ordered two large orders and enjoyed the house-cultured butter, which was light smooth flavor. The cheeseburger was a delicious, thick patty, but the handcut fries were so-so and disappointing accompaniment to a delicious burger. Flannery 14 Day Dry Aged Ribeye 135 brown butter hollandaise. paprika oil. The person who ordered this dish did not enjoy the flavor. He felt this was not flavorful enough for a dry age steak and was disappointed. Overall most of us loved what we ordered and we will return. This is a great place to just chill and to celebrate any occasion in your life!

Thank you!! My hubby and I originally came here for the yurt experience and did not have a good time. The ambiance and service was good but the food was not. We were invited back to experience the restaurant so we ended up coming with our two small children. What a different experience!! All of the food was fantastic. First of all, they have play dough for the kids which was a hit. The drinks were great we had a Negroni, banana daiquiri, and we tried the not so espresso martini. Each was delicious and we highly recommend. We also had the smoked fish brunch addition which was fantastic. The bread was so fresh and every element of the plate worked well together. Our kids had a hot dog and burger both with fries. They came out right away and each were delicious. My hubby and i had the little gem Caesar and bavette steak. For dessert we had basque cheesecake and the soft serve. Overall a fantastic meal and we will definitely be back. Thank you to charter oak for welcoming us back and allowing us to experience your food.

I was recommended this place for the burger and my oh my did it blow me away! Best burger I've had in the area, hands down! It's served with hand cut fries and their ketchup, that they make in house. Delicious!! You have to also try their soft serve ice cream, so good!!! We really appreciated the service when we told them we were in a rush to get to our next wine tasting. They got us in and out very quickly. I will be dreaming of this burger until I come back.
Love the food so much and the service was great.
We were seated outside which was not really with a good ambience.
While they MUST buy some plants or find a way to warm up
While they MUST buy some plants or find a way to warm up the room and space (add some screens or decor inside???), the place is still unique and the outside is great. The burger is delicious but the menu in general is fussy with a random selection of things. Needs a bigger menu. Service is really nice and improved... super nice staff. Delicious Caesar salad. Yummy bread. Lots of things to like about the place but the huge wide open interior space is a head scratcher. Very cold and barren. Still, a fun worthwhile place, though.

What a treat! My husband booked a Yurt dining experience my
What a treat! My husband booked a Yurt dining experience my birthday. It was just lovely. Even on a rainy day, waking into the restaurant is impressive. It is just a beautiful restaurant! My husband said he was called by the restaurant a few days prior to confirm the reservation and (given that the cold and rainy weather was expected) if we still wanted to Yurt dine. We did and they gave us great advice of dress in layers. They also went over the 4 course menu which I felt was thoughtful. I was impressed with how warm the Yurt was but if you are still cold, there are blankets for you to use. Rene was thee most attentive, friendly, knowledgeable and awesome server. He hands down answered all of our questions and our food came out in perfect timing of one another. We had plenty of private quiet dining which was welcomed due to us celebrating my birthday. Food was hands down delicious! I recommend: The vegetables with the soy bean dip. Do not skip on the fresh vegetables. You'll never have veggies like this again! Trust me. The bread. Ok I know what you are thinking..it's just bread. Well no, it is not. Crispy on the outside, perfect chew on the inside and spectacular churned butter. So good. From the tasting menu: The chicken croquettes. Right size bites packing so much flavor. Duck and beet salad- what a perfect pair. Chicken broth- a small sip feels like a warm tight hug. I would love to come back. Correction. We will be back in the late spring/early summer. Would love to do a dinner in a yurt. I never knew this gem of a place existed. I selfishly want to keep this place a secret but it's so hard to not rave about Charter Oak. I'm so glad my husband chose this place to dine at. I highly recommend and cannot wait to go back. .

We stopped by Charter Oaks for lunch with no reservation for 5 people. We ended up sitting at the bar which was perfectly fine. Food was very delicious and the pork chop we order was very juicy! I recommend ordering their wings, pasta and their pork chop made to perfection!
Food is delicious.
A must try for the experience. Service was excellent, as well. Our server was so kind and gave his recommendations. We had the burger, gem salad, the sourdough bread and cream butter, and the chicken. Everything we had had unique and delicious flavor. I would come back for drinks but nothing I must eat again.
Management stepped in and up
I really liked the layout of this place. It is spacious and airy with a very high ceiling. You donāt hear the neighboring tables especially when the playlist kicks in with loud music which during our lunch was often. The menu is concise and expensive considering its simplicity. The wine list is extensive and as expected pricey, some of the best deals are astonishingly in the imported wines. The food is good but unfortunately languishes somewhere before being bought to table and is thus barely warm. This was a veritable put off. The servers leave the dessert menu and never return to take the order. We had to get up and give our order to the gaggle of servers who were waiting for who knows what. Fortunately management took notice of these lapses and corrected the bill. I found this intervention professional and courteous. And voila the reason for four starsā¦.otherwise it would have been two.

My husband and I had the best meal of our lives at Charter Oaks this evening. The interior design and decor were just amazing and the atmosphere was perfect. Now about the food- to call it delicious is an understatement. Every single dish was uniquely prepared and perfectly balanced. Our first courses were grilled persimmons and their version of the Caesar salad - both were very tasty. For the main course, we split their dry aged ribeye. The steak was by far the most delicious steak we've had. Our sides were oyster mushrooms and grilled vegetables - we loved every bite. We ended our meal with a soft serve and it was the most satisfying ending to an amazing meal. The restaurant is located on the property which dates back to 1800. Every corner speaks of history and we were wowed by the interior decor. We will definitely be back. Next time we will most likely try the private yurt experience. The yurts looked amazing.

Cute place! Some things here were very good, some were alright. I loved the grilled fresh bread with house-churned butter; for me, this was the highlight. The fresh veggies from that garden with fermented soy dip was really excellent. Nothing unique, just fresh, crispy, and delicious. Grilled persimmons were nice and flavorful. We also enjoyed the sturgeon osso bucco, though initially it felt a bit fishy - my partner loved the seasoning on it. The rancho gordo corona beans were okay - there wasn't really much or any hoja santo flavor. We also tried the eton mess, which was good but not great. Service was excellent, shout-out to our thoughtful server, Todd!
Why on Michelin List?
Went for the Cheeseburger we heard about and it was great, but the rest of the family was totally disappointed in their meals. Portions were small, overpriced for that portion, wine list isnāt great, and then add the waiter who was just not caring anything about us. Never came back to check on us at all, no personality whatsoever, added an extra drink to our bill , which we caught, and final blow, he decided to add a 20% tip to our bill and there were only 5 of us, so poor service and yet got his tip!!
Not worth it
We had high hopes for this restaurant. Iāve never met a Napa Cab I didnāt like until tonight. The cab was terrible. The service was sub par - never checked on us - minimal service. We were told it was a family style restaurant - the portions arenāt anywhere close to family style. The food wasn't bad, but small and definitely not worth the price. There are so many good places to eat in the area - go somewhere else.
Excellent dinner
We have made so many trips to Napa but had not visited Charter Oakā¦.now that we have we will be returning. Our party of 8 had a great time and enjoyed some great food ā do NOT miss the Sourdough breadā¦.it is fabulous! We shared a variety of appetizers ā the wings were great, the vegetables fantastic, the beef tartare very fresh, and the burrata was delicious! My husband and I shared the steak and it was a generous portion and perfectly prepared. You may bring your own wine if youāve picked up something you canāt wait to try and their wine list is also very good. The atmosphere can be noisy but the very high ceilings lift most of it away. Our only question was what the heck took us so long to visit!
Amazing restaurant!
The Charter Oak is located in the heart of St. Helena and is a must-stop destination if you're in the Napa Valley area. We dined at The Charter Oak on our first night in Napa, and it was a phenomenal start to the trip. I recommend making reservations in advance as it can be busy and it's a pretty small restaurant overall. Reservations can be made in advance through Resy. The Charter Oak has a private parking lot with an ample amount of free parking. We entered the restaurant, just look for a large wooden door to the right after you leave the parking lot. We missed it at first and walked right past it, lol. We entered the restaurant, and were greeted warmly by the host and also were congratulated about our 1 year anniversary that was noted on the reservation. We then were seated and the server also recognized the special occasion as well and provided us two glasses of complimentary champagne to celebrate the occasion as well. The server came back a few minutes later and offered to answer any questions we had, and we placed our order. For drinks, we ordered a bottle of red blend wine (I don't remember which one, I think it was around $70 for the bottle and was really tasty. I don't think there's a "bad bottle" of wine on the menu.) For food, we started with the Salad of Little Gems ($19), and it was phenomenal, very fresh (I think it was probably from their farm just up the street). We also ordered The Cheeseburger ($25) and it included a small side of fries. The burger was also very tasty and was absolutely outstanding! We also ordered the side of Garden Broccoli ($13) and it was also all very fresh and tasty as well. We ended the meal with the Jersey Cow's Milk Soft Serve ice cream ($12) which also came from a nearby dairy farm, and it was also really good. We didn't have a single bad thing on the menu and service was great! Definitely stop in if you're in the area!
Good and Ambience good, Server terrible
This could and should have been a 10 out of 10 but the server needs some help with service. The hosts were pleasant but gave no direction. Asked us to wait for the whole party to arrive so we sat by the huge fire pit. Gorgeous. A little later came over and said āoh go inside and grab a drink while youāre waiting.ā Just felt like that should have been an option from the start. When we sat, our server, Jessica (Yessica), made the evening terrible. The food was great but she was awful. Maybe sheās new or was having a bad day, but this is not the industry for her. Abrupt and rude, super unhelpful and made our whole experience terrible. The food was good, the music and vibe was fun, but spoiled by her. Iām sorry to any other tables that have her.
Enjoyed the entire evening and meal
Enjoyed every aspect of our meal here. The environment/bar/outside area/dining area were unique. Waiter was exceptional, and made several recommendations that all turned out better than expected.
New favorite Napa area restaurant!
Excellent dinner on our last evening in St. Helena. Wish we would've gone earlier in our trip so we could visit again. Lovely patio seating with attentive servers and the food was all delicious. Can't wait to return.
