Toma Restaurant & Bar Santa Barbara Reviews from The Last Year
Service was great! Gnocchi was good.
Portions were very small. Cioppino was fine. Don't order the short rib it was like beef jerky.
Lovely restaurant! Excellent service and delicious food.
You will love the quaint atmosphere and hospitality.
Subpar food- HORRIBLE SERVICE.
We came here for a good friend's birthday with a party of 9- not that big for a qualified restaurant and our waiter was awful. He argued with our party with discrepancies on the bill, insisted we ordered things when we didn't, was taking shots behind the bar throughout the evening and was extremely inattentive. It took him 45 minutes to bring 2 glasses of wine. What should have been a 2ish hour dinner was 4 hours long because he was so inattentive. The icing on the cake was that our waiter made sure to circle "gratuity not included" on our bill... his tip probably would have been much better if he was more attentive we would have ordered more drinks. But don't worry- he charged for extra glasses of wine that we did not in fact order to increase the bill. We informed the manager of our experience several times and only received one apology. Super disappointed as there was no service recovery offered. To the owners I plead you to assess your staff and encourage better service recovery.
The food was great but service was bad.
Our waiter was very slow, argued with us when a wrong dish came out, charged us 5 glasses of wine when we only had two. We were also there for about 3 hours.... We got there at 7:45 and we didn't get our food until like 10pm... and Even after we complained a couple times he came back and tried to argue and make excuses. We saw the waiter take some shots with a customer at the bar a couple times, which is honestly not a problem but we had many issues.... even complained to the manager and got no "I'm sorries" 0 comped, nothing. Service was bad food was good.
Just imagen Saturday night full restaurant no reservation.
Never the less we a party of 7 tried to get in Tomar Restaurant. We approach a gentleman at the door and explained our problem and his answer was... "don't worry we were expecting you, your table will be ready in a minute" That was the first impression then a clean table all dressed with glasses and silverware. We asked for wine and I had my usual vodka martini. Then the food. I shared with my wife, lentil soup and an incredible black ink pasta!! There were some 6 other delicious plates that my family had and we enjoyed a very pleasant evening. The service was prompt and polite we had two waiters attending us all the time. Again the quality of the food was extraordinary. Later when we were leaving we learned that Sam Grant the gentleman that told us "we were expecting you and your table is ready is the owner of the place. Thanks Sam you have a great place, not only pleasant but with decent prices and a great ambiance!!!
We started with a caprese salad.
The tomatos were not quite ripe and the cheese was rubbery. Chiopino was good. The seafood pasta sauce was too rich, but ok. Service was ok
5 for service Food 4.

We visited Toma on a Saturday night, drawn by its impressive 4.5-star rating. While some aspects impressed us, others fell short. Room for Improvement: The seafood pasta lacked flavor; the sauce needed more seasoning. The lasagna had burnt top layer and tough parts. The lamb dish was well-cooked but lacked tasty sauce. Service was polite but slow. The Highlights: The red wine was delightful. The Chocolate and Phyllo strawberry desserts were the stars of the meal. Toma offers decent food, but you might find better options elsewhere, especially at a lower price point.

We just celebrated our 32nd Anniversary enjoying a top notch dining experience! From the way we were greeted, the service and an attention from the servers, managers and wait staff. They gave us suggestions on food pairings and drink choices. There was never any pressure and they were engaging. The food was delicious with generous potions. We will definitely be back with so many choices to choose from.

great service from Gabe C! food was amazing, great vibe at the restaurant. Definitely a Santa Barbara gem
This is one of our favorite little spots every time we go
This is one of our favorite little spots every time we go to Santa Barbara. We've had Most every item on the menu and everything is delicious, including the desserts and coffee, drinks afterwards. The servers are always terrific and the Restaurant is filled with charm. Definitely a place that we stop at every time we go to Santa Barbara.
Just tried it with a friend.
Tuna cones were ok, not as flavorful as I hoped. I had the seafood pasta and it too was not much in terms of flavor, though the seafood was plentiful. My friend's halibut was really good. Service was very attentive. I also think it's very expensive. Most beach places are for the tourists and it was doing a nice tourist business the night we were there.
This got such great reviews, but was a huge miss from us.
We started with the artichoke appetizer and while it was tasty, it wasn't up to par. It tasted of canned artichokes fried. Not what you expect from a higher in restaurant such as this. My husband had the pork chop and it was sliced up in the pieces that were sliced off The bone were dry, but the pieces that were still on the bone we ok. I had the squid pasta and Iwith the seafood and it was just OK. It had these hard pieces of cured Italian ham on the top that just didn't belong. I've had much better at lower end places, and this was not cheap.
A reservation is a must because we ended up at the bar.
Service is great. The ambiance was not great since we sat close to the toilets but I intend to go back with a reservation. The food was delicious. The prosciutto potatoes went very really with the braised beef. The lamb is juicy and presented in a delicious puree. The seafood pasta was fresh. We'll definitely go back
Delicious..but too fast
We made a reservation for a table at 730p in advance and were seated quickly once we arrived. The food was excellent. We ordered the calamari and the squash blossoms for appetizers. They were both delicious. The pasta dishes we ordered (ravioli, seafood pasta, and black spaghetti) were great as well. The only thing that bothered me was that our entire meal from start to finish was 45 minutes! The pacing of the meal was way too fast for a fine dining establishment such as this one. Maybe slow it down a bit and it would be a perfect evening.
One of my favorite places to eat in SB.
I was here again last weekend and the food was perfectly portioned and delicious. I absolutely cherish the waiting staff too!
Busy restaurant with high end feel.
Booked a reservation months ahead of our stay in Santa Barbara and although it was a Tuesday evening was still very busy so glad we had the reservation. Tables were very close together so some in the middle of the room may have felt a little crowded. We were offered a table close to the bar but declined as the people at the bar were too close for us. Fortunately they had one other table next to a wall which was ok. Service was very good overall with just a couple of reminders needed when ordering an extra glass of wine as it was extremely busy. Staff well dressed and professional. We shared a Caprese Salad between two to start which worked well and was very good and we had salmon and lasagna for mains both again very good. The menu is relatively small but a good variety of dishes and we prefer this to a large menu as it usually means what is available is more likely to be well prepared. It’s located along the harbour road across the street from beachfront. We enjoyed our visit and thought it was decent value for this restaurant quality.
This review is for our 6:30 dinner on 5/11.
Initially made reservations for 8:30 the night before through Opentable but sorely underestimated how hungry we would be by dinner time and ended up showing up two hours early, to which we were accommodated without issue at the bar. Service from the gentleman in black at the bar was spot on throughout the entire meal, from recommendations to attentiveness. Lights are kept dim and the house sommelier's knowledge may have you rethinking not getting a glass with your meal. Surprisingly high family presence as well. We started with their complimentary herb bread and butter as well as an order of the calamari. The tangy green onion sauce was a great alternative to typical marinara, and the bread was moist with a very light mouthfeel. Housemade Pasta was incredible - noodles were coated wonderfully with the rich yet delicate lemon butter sauce, and the shrimp and scallops stole the show with their freshness and size. The Black Spaghetti was pleasantly garlicky and was accompanied by a very healthy amount of well cooked clams. Strips of Calabrese salami provided a nice richness to the dish. Great date night spot.

I went to Toma for the first time last night and was extremely underwhelmed. The food was great but the service was some of the worst I've experienced here in Santa Barbara. We waited an extremely long time to even be greeted and to receive any kind of water or bread. We watched as multiple other tables who came after us receive attention and were able to place their orders as we were still waiting for someone to come visit our table once. We felt as though we had to order everything at once as we worried we wouldn't be able to get another order placed within a reasonable time period. This was a good call on our part as the next time we saw our waiter we were ready for the check. We saw our waiter a total of two times throughout the night and when we asked for extra bread he forgot that as well. It was extremely disappointing to receive such terrible service from a place with great food and great ambiance. I wish I could say I'd be coming back but unfortunately I would much rather spend my money at a place that does not make me feel neglected as a guest.
We enjoyed our recent dinner at Toma, each ordering a fish
We enjoyed our recent dinner at Toma, each ordering a fish and steak daily special. Pros: The meal was delicious with beautiful presentation and thoughtful ingredients. The ambience was nice and intimate: perfect for a date night or my birthday, as it happened to be. The young man serving water was very friendly and polite. Cons: The server wouldn't make eye contact with me, only spoke to my husband, and then handed me the bill at the end of the meal. Something red got splashed across the side of my husband's Italian shirt, which we assume was from staff or another customer. It wasn't an area that he could have spilled on while we were enjoying our meal.
The service here was amazing.
The attentiveness and hospitality were top notch. This was my second time at Toma and the service has been above and beyond both time. The decor and all the settings were done beautifully. Restrooms were very clean. My only compliant is that some of the tables are too close together. Almost bumped into the other table trying to get up from the table. Now comes the reason for the two stars. My girlfriend ordered the cioppino and I, the rack of lamb. As well as some tuna cones to start the meal. The cones are amazing. My girlfriend has come here a few times just for the cones themselves. I cannot say the same for the rest of the food. I had ordered the rack of lamb medium rare as per the recommendation of the staff and received it closer to well done, but otherwise the vegetables and sauce complimented the lamb very well. The cioppino on the other hand was disgusting. The broth was overly fishy, to which you might say, "well its a seafood dish, of course its going to be fishy". Unfortunately the taste just lingered way after the meal. Possibly the worst cioppino and even frozen from costco was not this offensive. Did they use old seafood in the stew? Possibly. The cioppino was barely touched and we just opted to just not take the leftover home. We were still hungry, but luckily the funkzone has a lot of other eateries that do not disappoint. tl;dr great service, but disgusting food and a cook staff that doesnt know how to take temperature
Good food but not intimate as the place is jam packed.
The food was absolutely great…average potions but creative and well served. The Cosmo was SMALL…such a trivial item but starts the meal off badly…fill it to the brim…at these prices costs you nothing. Service was good….its not an intimate place as it’s packed but a good place for a foodie.
I was super disappointed in this restaurant.
We were staying in Santa Barbara, and our hotel concierge raved about Toma when we asked for dinner recommendations. It also came up when we searched for nearby restaurants with outdoor dining and a view. I called to make a reservation and was told that the earliest seating they had was 9:30, which was weird because Yelp hours showed that they closed at 9. I assumed the hours weren't updated. The host also told us that the city took away their outdoor tables, but they were also super cool if we asked if we could add a few people to our reservation. We were seated pretty shortly after arriving, which was pretty good for a party of 7. The complimentary fried olives seemed like they'd been sitting out for a long time, and I was glad I didn't pay for them. The fried artichokes we ordered were similar, not much flavor and weren't freshly fried. The squash blossoms were probably the best app, although I think a little less goat cheese would be a better flavor balance. I ordered the Seafood Pasta, which other friends at our table had said they were thinking of ordering. It was probably the most bland, unseasoned, flavorless pasta I've ever had. The "sauce" was more like water. I liked the texture and chewiness of the noodles, but that was about it. The salmon chunks and the scallops had no seasoning or sear, and the worst was the shrimp.. it was translucent and undercooked. I hated leaving most of a $39 dinner on the table, but I was afraid of raw shrimp. I'm a big proponent of saying something in the moment as opposed to a Yelp review, but no one came by after that to ask how our food was. It was obvious that they were closed and trying to clean up, but I don't know why we were allowed to dine in at 9:30 in that case.

Ohhhhhhh my! We found ourselves a good one! Staying the night in Santa Barbara and wanted a special meal. Husband looked an online and saw one of the top rated restaurants were near our hotel! We arrived 20 minutes early, cuz we were hungry! lol! We were the first ones seated in the restaurant. The staff was extremely attentive the entire meal. The bread and butter and fried olives were amazing. I knew we were in for a treat! Ordered calamari as our starter. Juan the waiter was soooo personable, and a natural! He sold me on the fresh catch of the day: prosciutto wrapped halibut, asparagus and carrots on a bed of polenta! SOLD!!!! My hubs got the ravioli with fresh ricotta, kale, and parmesan. It was so amazing! We shared the raspberry Mouse with berries for dessert! Bam! So so good!! We give the entire staff a 5 star rating as well but Juan deserves extra recognition! Such a fun, easy going guy! We'll be back! And, we'll bring friends.
Fantastic dinner at Toma.
Top notch food and service in a small, intimate setting. Grilled octopus, lasagna, gem salad and squash flowers were outstanding! A special-occasion place, or not, you don't want to miss it! The wine selection was excellent and our cocktails were inventive and delicious. Already looking forward to returning soon!

Pasta was cooked to perfection, service was excellent, and the atmosphere was cozy! Highly recommend Toma!
Holy smokes Batman.
A fantastic spot for the best Italian cuisine on the west coast. Start with Raul at the bar for a the best artisan cocktail you've ever had. Then make sure and request Juan for service beyond expectations for a dinner that will knock your socks off. Great wine list too for you fellow winos. You can do it!
Beautiful food and atmosphere
Toma has such a great atmosphere, recommended by our hotel we were given a warm greeting as soon as we entered which is always a great start. Seated outside on a perfect evening. Food was superb, wine list creative and interesting. Feeling of energy and joy
A super meal!
We were only in SB for one night so chose Toma for dinner and boy did we choose well! The food was incredible, I loved every bite of my sausage pasta dish and my husband did the salmon. Super attentive service and the puds were great too! Top notch!
Our anniversary dinner.
Was our anniversary and had a wonderful time. Place reminds me of Europe with fully filled Resturant and many small(quaint) 2 person tables. Food was wonderful, was a good experience.
Good but not great
Busy! Reservations would be a must have on a weekend. The food was good but not spectacular. Liked the fried artichokes and chocolate dessert but the halibut was a bit overcooked and drier than I like it. The service and wine was great.
Tom Left
Bread good. Service good. Crispy salmon not crispy. Placed on top of beans n cooked greens goes way limp and undistinguished. Crispy calamari fried at too low a temperature. Comes out chewy and limp. Arugula salad is overpowered by nest of onions on top. All fixable but brief discussion with head chef indicated he didn’t care or know the difference between meeting schedules on a busy Friday vs serving quality food to discerning clients. First time back since Tom sold to in- house staff. Better wise up and think about what made this a staple of local diners!!
Birthday Dinner
Our food tasted very good, BUT the service was terribly SLOW!! The mention that we were celebrating 2 birthdays was made several times without any acknowledgement of our celebration. The waiter was very hard to understand and didn't seem to care about how long we waited for our drinks, meal, and dessert.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome
to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
