Sotto Mare San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
Everything was delicious.
Serving size was very big. We had three people and couldn't finish everything

A must eat spot when in Little Italy in SF! As a group of two, we had no reservation but waited in line to the hostess for about 15 minutes and luckily were seated at the bar right away on a Saturday night. Best known for their Cioppino and I can agree it is a must order! I also appreciate the claws being cracked for easier eating. The seafood was not only fresh and plentiful but the stew flavor was so flavorful and I love the tomato shining through with the seafood broth. Complimentary bread must be used to get every last drop of the broth. I also ordered the Fettucine with Bay scallops and the alfredo creaminess was perfect. The bay scallops were petite and great bite size. I added some dashes of tobacco and it was a win for me.
The BEST spot! There is truly nothing like Sotto Mare.
They have incredible, fresh food, and it's such a fun environment. You will have to show up earlier than you want to eat because there is almost always a wait, but it's well worth it. (Just go across the street and get a glass of wine!) it's a must stop every time we're in town!

Visited Sotto Mare for the famous cioppino and it didn't disappoint! For starters, every single table ordered cioppino when we went for Saturday. They hand out bibs for the dish so it was funny to see the restaurant full of customers in their bibs. The cioppino is $55 for two and it definitely is a large portion size! It comes with large shrimp, small shrimp, mussels, clams, squid, small scallops and crab as well as penne pasta. There's a side of bread that is great for dipping in the broth. We also ordered west coast oysters and clams on the half shell. The oysters were really large and I personally would've preferred smaller ones that are less fishy. I also thought the clams could've been removed from the shell better so they would be easier to eat. We sat at the bar and it was fun to see the chefs chuck oysters and sauté seafood. All in all, it was a great dining experience. The food came very fast, the waitress was nice and I'm glad I can check off cioppino from my S.F. bucket list!
Oh my, was our experience at this iconic SF restaurant
Oh my, was our experience at this iconic SF restaurant outstanding from A to Z. Arrived on a Saturday around 2pm expecting an hour or two wait. Nope. We were sitting at their cozy bar, toward the front, in 15 minutes, yay! Birds Eye view of the action. Our server was spot on, kept the iced tea with crushed ice refilled, and provided stellar service. Secondary servers whisked plates away, kept water glasses filled, etc. This is a fine tuned operation! Our seafood was beyond excellent. We had the Scallops, huge, perfectly browned but not a hair overcooked, as was the Salmon, thick, silky in texture, and simply perfection. The vegetables were perfect. The bread & butter was warm & crusty, perfect for mopping up the mind-blowing sauce on the scallops, true foodie magic. This will be a permanent stop on our SF rotation.
Cioppino

Tl;dr - The place to go for italian when you are a "regular" in North Beach, Sotto Mare (Say it right with me, saa-tow ma-day) is best known for having the best damn cioppino in San Francisco. No I mean that, look at their menu. All kidding aside this is a no-nonsense, high value, local delight with dishes that rival locations twice their price, just don't expect fine dining. I love the counter seating, right where the action is. When people want to taste North Beach in an unpretentious way, this is where I take them. Located on a great street filled with notorious dives and Golden Boy's pizza, Sotto Mare is a casual fish-centered italian restaurant that delves in all the classics you'd expect from something steeped in San Franciscan Italiano. While they definitely are with it service wise, there aren't any fancy tablecloths here so don't bother with the dressy clothes, bring jeans. If you are eating what you should be eating, it's gonna get messy. Aside from their very decent italian pastas and fish (try the sanddabs), the only thing I really get here is "The Best Damn Cioppino" which unlike rival places like Fog Harbor, has ALL THE FIXINGS. We are talking baby scallops, octopus, squid, crab, shrimp, bay shrimp, clams, mussels, did I miss anything? It's all in there, and the dedication to this one dish is why it's fantastic every. single. time. Feeds 2 people easily, it's a great deal at about 50$. I've had it here and I've had it to go and when you do the latter I give them an extra special shoutout because they give you MOUNDS of bread. Like 2 loafs I've gotten sometimes. The bread is part of the process because when you eat all that seafood, that sauce sopped up with the bread is just like getting kissed by St. Margaret. Squisito, most definitely. They used to do a happy hour, not sure if they still do but you can easily get a nice healthy pour of Chianti with this and I tend to do so (a few times). Fair prices across the board, this is a great place to post up with some friends or family for a casual dinner anytime. They do get a little busy during dinner rush so prepare for a wait, I hope they stick around for many years to come. Easily one of my top 10 restaurants in San Francisco, no question.
What happened to me was unfortunate.
They take your credit card when you put your name in to ensure you return their pager. I was told the wait would be 45 minutes. After over 45 minutes, we hadn't been called, so we checked our status. We discovered that somehow someone else had taken our spot (hopefully by mistake) AND my card! Apparently there was some mix-up but they couldn't locate my card before we left the restaurant. That night, I received a notification that someone had attempted to use my card (fortunately it was declined as it had been locked). I was promised they would call me whether or not the card was turned in, but I didn't receive any call after 48 hours (I left voicemail as well) so now I'm cancelling my card. I have to say it's unfortunate that I didn't receive any apology from them. From the way I was treated, I didn't see much professionalism in their customer service.
Nice staff, nice outside dining, AMAZING sea scallops! Able

Best Cioppino in San Francisco!
We were very keen to try San Francisco’s famous cioppino after researching it online before our visit. We tried two different restaurants famous for the dish and one was really good, and one was average. Third time lucky when we went to Sotto Mare! Cioppino was in my opinion perfect. Beautiful fresh seafood and they pre crack the crab for you, making it a much easier dish to eat. Oysters were fresh and delicious! Service was excellent, and the atmosphere relaxed and comfortable. Highly recommend a visit if you’re in San Francisco for a day or two.
Excellent neighborhood restaurant
I found Sotto mare when walking the Washington Square and North Beach area. It was close to 1 pm and I couldn't find a restaurant that was open, had tables or looked appealing ... until I found Sotto Mare. Sotto Mare is maybe a block off the main street and a short walk from Washington Square. It is very much a locals' place; a neighborhood joint. Service was excellent. The seafood was superb and perfectly cooked. I oped for mahi mahi, which one of the daily specials. My shrimp cocktail "salad" was mediocre because I didn't like the presentation. Four pieces of jumbo shrimp on a bed of iceberg lettuce with cocktail sauce. Shrimp cocktails should be on ice. Bread and ice water were served as soon as I sat down. The wine list was limited, especially roses and sparkling wines. But the chardonnay for $12 by the glass was good and fairly priced. It drank like a $15-$20 lightly oaked chardonnay. If I had complaints: 1) The outdoor furniture is a little worn and just feels cheap; like they bought it at garage sales. 2) I'd like a better sparkling wine (a good traditional method California sparkling wine) and a dry rose. 3) The outdoor seating is great for people watching but you don't get any sun because of all the side curtains and overhead panels or whatever you call them. Most of the customers seemed to be locals having lunch at a neighborhood restaurant. All things considered, I would very much return.
The best cioppino in San Francisco
This place serves the best cioppino in town. We usually are happy eating outside in good weather since they have a parklet area in front. They accept reservations for 3 or more. Today at 6:00 , they offered my husband and me a seat at the bar or a 40 min wait. We chose the bar and were seated near the dishwashing station, and we found it very noisy. (The end of the bar near the front of the restaurant, as well as the indoor tables, would probably be quieter). However, the cioppino was excellent, filled with lots of seafood in a wonderful broth. We saw some other folks eating sand dabs, and they looked really good and we're going to try them another time. At a table outside.
Just great food and service
Outstanding…food…outstanding service Two of us went tonight…$96 with tip for a great dinner of 3 oysters, scallop fettuccine, crab Louie…the service was genuine and avoided unnecessary flamboyance, the food generous in portion and quality. My only regret is that we leave San Francisco tomorrow and won’t sneak another visit in
Great North Beach Restaurant
Super fun and lively spot to try out San Francisco seafood! On a Friday afternoon, me and a friend got seated at the counter and so we could watch chefs work which is really exciting! The service was fast and efficient even though the place was sort of busy and packed. We went there specifically on a word of mouth suggestion to try Sorto Mare and we were not disappointed. Unlimited bread and butter to start off our lunch experience. My friend ordered Linguine with Seafood which includes a medley of different types of seafood. His dish was huge! While I ordered a Fettuccine with Smoked Salmon. That was big enough to share as well. I’m totally happy with checking out this North Beach Italian restaurant and planning to come back again for more pasta and other kinds of dishes.
Iconic restaurant must go
We were on our last remaining hours in San Francisco and came across this recommended restaurant from Francisco at the Harbor Court Hotel. Wow were we glad we stumbled across it! What a fantastic way to get a feel of historic San Francisco in an iconic restaurant such as Sotto Mare. As they say "When in Rome..." (or San Francisco ) you order the Crab Cioppino! Didn't even know I had room to fit all that we ate, but it was a pleasantly full, airplane ride back to Canada.
Delicious seafood in San Fran
The food was delicious and the service was great. We had to sit at the bar because we did not make reservations on a Saturday night and we actually enjoyed sitting there watching the activity all around us. The bartender was prompt, we were brought water and bread right away, and she made great recommendations. We researched the menu before we went and knew what we were going to order, and that’s exactly what she recommended. We had the Cioppino and Seafod pasta In a delicious white sauce. Good wine and beer selection as well. The location was pretty close to the cable car stop but it’s a good hike to get back up and work off all we ate.
A Must
Even on a busy Saturday, the wait was short and entirely worth it for the best cioppino in town. The dish, large enough to share between two, was packed with fresh, tender seafood in a sublime tomato-spice broth. A great find for those looking to enjoy San Francisco’s culinary delights.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome
to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
