Sushi by Scratch Restaurants: Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Trendy American sushi that is a very fun experience.
Great fish topped with flavors and textures that are very American and a welcome change. Food was great. Ambiance was very solid as well. This is place to bring friends because the chefs are very interactive. With a group it would be a blast. I'd come back for sure.
Came here for an early valentines dinner.
It was fantastic! The food and service were top notch. The drinks were really good as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the yuzu drinks. The speak easy vibe and intimate atmosphere really enhanced the experience.
Honestly is way overpriced.
Food was good and people are all nice and make good convo but I spent $700 and it wasn't amazing. I've had way better Omakase experiences for ~2-300 and it's a blast. I won't recommend others places here but I can't see myself going back to scratch unfortunately
Amazing quality fish and one-of-a-kind experience.
Super interactive and creative. The service was also very good, so nice to get to chat with all the chefs. Highly recommend it!
To start off, Sushi by Scratch is sort of like a speakeasy
To start off, Sushi by Scratch is sort of like a speakeasy vibe. Before the appointment you're given a code to use to enter the establishment. At first we were directed to a small room with 5-6 tables. It turns out that was the waiting room where you are served a complimentary cocktail and 2 amuse-bouche. The first was a tuna roll and another was oysters. Both were great refreshing bites to start off. I must admit that I was so absorbed in the experience that I only took pictures of each nigiri presented but also wanted to focus on Chef Naomi and her team present each item. The whole omakase experience came with 19 sushi and all of them were sublime. I wanted every bite to last longer than the previous because it was that good. Unfortunately I could only post 10 photos for this review but have many more of the other nigiris. In terms of price point, I think compared to other omakase places, this is worth it for the amount of nigiris presented and the thoughtfulness put into the cocktails and sake options. Overall, for two, it was over $500, so definitely on the pricier side that is saved for a special occasion. Overall, for our omakase experience where I took my boyfriend for his birthday, Chef Naomi and her team definitely made the experience fun, special and lighthearted. My boyfriend really enjoyed this experience and Chef Naomi even gave him caviar to try for the first time so that was really nice of her. Lastly, the fish were really fresh considering we are having sushi in the Midwest. It was definitely an explosion of flavor for every bite. I would totally come back for another occasion!
I got a reservation for Sushi by Scratch same day
I got a reservation for Sushi by Scratch same day (Tuesday), fairly last minute. From the reservation site, it seems like reservations aren't too difficult to come by except for the weekends. I reserved for a party of 4, and called ahead to ask if we could be seated in a particular order (I wanted two of my friends who were having their first omakase experience to be closer to the center to get the best view of all the omakase action) and the manager Bryan was incredibly accommodating and gracious. To get to Sushi by Scratch, you go through a bar and you would never guess a whole different establishment is hidden inside of it. It was a pretty intriguing way to introduce the experience and our group enjoyed it. I believe it was Bryan who greeted us and he was exceptional in his service, leading our group into a smaller room where we were given a drink and some appetizers. This part of the omakase is optional, but I highly recommend it-I can't recall exactly what it was but the lime-ginger drink was phenomenal. The two appetizers were decent, first one being oyster and the second being a tuna tartare - avocado dish, enjoyable but nothing I would write home about. But the whole vibe was honestly really great. Afterward, our group was lead into the main sushi bar area where we would be served the omakase courses. Seats are assigned with names to add a personalized touch. However, I noticed that the order was reversed with what I had spoken about over the phone, which was completely understandable given how confusing it is to explain seating over the phone. We were told we could just switch the seating, but as we were doing this, the head chef (I believe her name is Naomi) kind of scoffed at us, and speaking to the patron directly in front of her, she said "they need to sit their asses down". Look, I'm not a snob when it comes to service at restaurants, but this was so out of left field I had to literally stop for a second to process what she had said. And it wasn't even in a joking tone or anything to us, it was said in an almost disparaging way and told while talking to the patron in front of her. Again, I've had omakase experiences I've loved where the service was very minimal and it did not detract from the experience (e.g. Omakase Yume) but to hear something like that be said when the omakase hasn't even started and we're paying $1K+ for this meal is just...something else. It was also in stark contrast to the excellent service from Bryan just moments prior. Even if the experience was soured a bit there, I tried my best to focus on the food that was to come since most of the reviews had been very positive. I had been on a bit of an omakase bender the past few months (Shiro's in Seattle, Sushi Shin in California, and Omakase Yume in Chicago) and I was excited to experience something a bit more nontraditional. The initial drink and appetizers were a solid start, and I was looking forward to the omakase. Unfortunately, the omakase was at best, unremarkable (and most definitely not worth the hefty pricetag). Some of the courses, such as the Hamachi or the Bone Marrow, sounded absolutely delicious and very intriguing (pieces of cornbread on top of the fish) but undelivered. Other courses completely missed the mark (there was one course with a pesto / olive oil on top, which one of my friends described as "disarming" which I think is an adequate description). Another thing to note, at around the halfway point all the courses switch from raw fish to partially torched / cooked. While I do enjoy the occasional torched course in omakase, the abundance of torched and cooked dishes near the end of the meal felt like they were lacking in the variety of fresher fish. I will say the ice cream / tea combo at the end was fantastic, though, and a nice way to end the meal. Would I go back or recommend other friends or family to go? No way, especially at this price point. The questionable service from the head chef, and the unremarkable omakase really makes me question why someone would go here over a different omakase spot (for just a little more you could go to Omakase Yume which has some of the best fish I've ever tasted). After this experience, I'm deterred from ever trying other Sushi by Scratch restaurants as well, which is a shame. Stars earned for the manager's service, the intriguing venue, the delicious drink at the beginning, and the dessert to close the meal. Stars lost because of the head chef's service, the very unremarkable omakase, and the price. 2/5
Compared to all the "omakase" in Chicago area now, this
Compared to all the "omakase" in Chicago area now, this place was decently priced. (My first time doing a omakase experience in the States). The first thing the host asks when you walk in this secret room from another bar situation is if we wanted to add on the caviar and truffles for an extra X dollars, which we declined. The waiting room was so small and I am slightly claustrophobic, so wasn't the most pleasant experience, but they did calm me down with a very sweet drink and a small oyster dish. Once we went into the actual dining room, it was a lot more breathable. However, the first thing my friend and I noticed was the wet rag smell unfortunately. That smell threw us off both for the whole two hours. There was also a little gnat in my friends sake shot glass, although they gave her a new full shot for free, it just kind of set the tone for both of us. The taste of each course which consisted of one nigiri was all pretty good, some more than others, some were a little too saucy where you can't taste the fish well or it was a little salty. Also, since the plate they served each dish on was an arms length away from you and they didn't give us any utensils because they wanted us to get the full experience by using our fingers, I expected each nigiri to keep it's form while it's bring transported into my mouth from the plate, but most of them crumbled onto the table before reaching my mouth, hence I had to rearrange my area and also pick up the plate and put it closer to my mouth for it to succeed. The service was fine, and the ambiance is dark and romantic. It only seats like 10 people and we were lucky to sit next to a sweet couple and conversation was easy. Most likely will not come back until I try at least a couple more omakase experiences, if I am lucky to do so.
Our favorite Omakase in Chicago.
Vibes were amazing, service was impeccable and food was incredible. Can't wait to come back at least on a yearly basis
Amazing experience all around.
The sushi chef was good at her craft and also a great conversationalist with great stories and interacted just the right amount to please the crowd. The fish definitely was high quality. I hope they get a Michelin nod as they're definitely worth it.
This place is amazing and has really cool flavors.
They recommend checking in 30 minutes prior to your reservation-which we're glad we did. they start you off in a different room for the first couple courses with a complimentary beverage-which you wouldn't receive if you weren't early. We loved the fact that you can add on extra courses at the end which they did say was only available for the last seating of the evening.. but if you are, this is well worth it. The drinks are very expensive however, with sake bottles averaging over $80 and their one beer on the menu is $12. we got one bottle of sake, 3 beers total, and two add ons each along with dinner for approximately $700. So beware, you will spend a pretty penny if you dine here, but overall this IS a cool experience. We sat on jeremy's side and had awesome service as well!
New Generation at Kuni's Doing Great!
We are so relieved that Kuni-san's son-in-law has taken the helm at Kuni's. We were afraid that Kuni-san's retirement would be the end of the restaurant, but happily not so. Still, to my mind, this is the local Japanese restaurant most closely resembling sushi restaurants in Japan. Wide variety of nigiri and make sushi, but no silly stuff like lox-and-cream-cheese maki. Excellent sashimi and tempura and an imaginative bento box with either chicken or salmon teriyaki.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res

Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Appointment
I was waiting on the transfer for name but it hasn’t happened yet and my reservation is tonight , will it be an issue that is hasn’t changed into my name yet
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Just got scammed!
Thats unfortunate but you can always get your money back if they cancel the reservation.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
