Bar Luce Milano - Buy Reservations

I came with my friends in early 2022 on the weekend. We wanted to visit the Prada Foundation and didn't manage because of personal issues. We then wanted to get into this beautiful bar. We have encountered a horrendous exchange with a staff member. This middle-aged man was slamming and locking the door in front of us, not letting us in. A couple of minutes passed and reopened the door. We tried to get information on why he wouldn't let us in. Instead of simply explaining, he started yelling at us that we had to wait. On the third time opening the door, we gently explained that we could go there to spend money, but he just kept on yelling jibberish. In conclusion, we waited 15 minutes outside with no further information. Coming from a Hospitality Management and Business School, we were very shocked and disgusted by this poor experience. Do not recommend it.

Inspired by the 1950s style, this bar takes an old Milanese cafe look and feels a bit like you're walking into a movie set. The employees have a certain finesse with every movement and creates a warm, inviting atmosphere in each interaction. I had the Luce sandwich which was hearty but not heavy. It was filling especially for a late lunch with a St Germaine spritz on the porch facing Fondazione Prada. We read a ton about it prior to visiting (Wes Anderson's cool design and delicious sandwiches.). It was a little off the beaten path as we walk everywhere when we are on vacation - but we loved walking there and seeing so many new areas in Milan. We loved all the restaurant's details - the vintage furniture, the fun bowtie server outfits, the pinball machines. The vegano sandwich was UNREAL. It was so delicious. We purchased five sandwiches and our bill was 35 euro... we thought that was incredibly reasonable and a very welcomed surprise.

It's a quaintly decorated and brings back nostalgia for yesteryear. However, it is also crowded and difficult to find a seat. You have to swoop down as soon as you find someone that looks like they're about to finish. Perhaps they need more seating or some other arrangement to control the crowd. We enjoyed our coffees and the tart. Despite other reviews to the contrary, we found the staff helpful. Note that we visited on a Saturday afternoon. Maybe a weekday visit will be less crowded. Went hoping for an interesting experience and ended up paying over the odds for a drink/ sandwich and then never received food. The bar staff and waiters are essentially incompetent, and the whole experience essentially felt like you were in a laughable scene from a Wes Anderson movie, and the staff did not understand what they were supposed to be doing. Whilst there someone dropped a glass on the floor but this was ignored by staff for some time who made no effort to clean the spill up safely or remove the glass, terrible. The whole experience was a very disappointing departure to what was expected and I must recommend that you don't bother attending unless you wish to waste time and money in an otherwise very interesting and experiential location. 0 stars if I were able.

I appreciate the effort of creating an intellectually stimulating environment throughout the Prada Foundation; and the actual creativity placed in this bar. The staff is truly nice and professional. Sandwiches are good and coffee of course great (not unusual in Italy). Wes Anderson's decoration is very disappointing. It does not capture the magic of his sets; and it just feels like a thematized bar. Its materials are not really capturing the depth of Italian 1950s bars, neither there is any sense of humor with the faked condition of this design. The terrazzo flooring has the right colors, but whereas Italian traditional terrazzo's are mostly cement-based, this one is mostly resine, what makes it look like plastic. The wooden paneling is not made of wood foil glued on a pine base and hand finished with "gomalaca", but just a super thin printed pattern on MDF, industrially glued and coated. This makes it look like a Leroy Merlín solution, totally disconnected with the European tradition of wooden paneling in cafes. Furniture gets a bit better. But wall papers are really nothing if compared with the exuberance and richness in patterns, colors and textures of the 1950s and 1960's wallpapers. And there is a weird memorabilia that seems a bit sad. Only a handful of mostly very well known cheap reproductions of vintage classics. Seems to lack professional knowledge and dedication. Surprising in a great OMA environment, developed by the refined Italian part of the firm. Rather than Wes Anderson, this could have been a commission to one of Wes Anderson's art directors, what for sure would have allowed to air the real experts, and would have given this place a much more ambitious momentum.In short, if you are at Fundazione Prada in the mode for a caffe or a sandwich use it; but I am afraid it'd be best not to grow higher expectations.

On my trio to Milan this was a must see as a fan of the Wes Anderson film, The Grand Budapest Hotel.

It is located in the grounds of a museum and is not a free standing venue but rather fits into the artsy vibe in which it is situated.

The bar/cafe itself is small but decorated well and is quite the experience. It is very busy so getting the photo ops takes a little time. The coffee was reasonably priced with an espresso coming in about €1.

If you like the film it's worth the visit. If you are on the fence I'm not sure.
