Sushi Ota San Diego Reviews from The Last Year
Discovered sushi ota for the first time after some
Discovered sushi ota for the first time after some recommendations from a colleague. Making a reservation is helpful to save time, as it was already packed at 5:30pm. Although we were initially told there would be an hour wait, we got a table within 30minutes, which was a pleasant. The staff were kind and sweet, adding to the overall positive experience. Every piece of sushi was fresh and absolutely delicious though rice was a little dry. The turnaround time was quick. I would return if I ever find myself in SD again.

This place has one of the worst customer services I've ever been to. We walk into the restaurant asking for 3 seats with a high chair, the receptionist (Rika) immediately said we don't have highchairs, with an pretentious undertone to her responses. She proceeded to ask if we have reservations, to which we replied "no", then she said that we have a spot for you but you only have one hour. WTF. It is as if her goal is to deter customers with children from dinning, then she has successfully done so. We just walk out. I usually don't write negative reviews on Yelp, but holysh*t this restaurant deserves one. Thanks Rika for your poor customer service. If there is an option to rate this place a "0 star", I would.

Came here after hearing about reviews and not sure why it is so raved. the ingredients are fresh but everything tasted kinda meh. Its also priced way to high for what youre getting.
Sushi Ota's Omakase ($120 pre-tax) is San Diego's finest.
Yes, sushi can be pricey, but believe me, this one earns every penny. When you get served a variety of sushi, sashimi, and nigiri, you usually drown them in soy sauce and fake wasabi because they're typically not that fresh. Despite their different appearances, they all end up tasting the same. Not in this case. Every single piece of seafood was an experience, with subtle flavors you could actually distinguish. The wasabi was freshly made, and you barely needed the soy sauce because you wanted to savor every delicate nuance. I've had my share of sushi places outside of Japan, and this omakase experience easily tops my list. The one thing it could improve on is the dessert. I had the black sesame ice cream, and it was, well, whelming (I know it's not a word, shush!). But I went to Sushi Ota for the sushi, and after experiencing the omakase, I can confidently say I'll be back for more. Next time, I might try the matcha ice cream, which my dining companion said was delicious.

I've had Sushi Ota bookmarked for a while now because of the amazing reviews and let me just say it didn't disappoint. Now it's not the best sushi I've ever had but for San Diego and for the price point ($$$) it was worth it. The service was a solid 10/10, and the ambiance I'd probably give 8/10 but still a very nice space. Now onto the food, I highly recommend getting the Tokusen Nigiri plate. It comes with 9 pieces of nigiri and 4 tuna rolls (see pic below) and it's only $37! Also ordered uni nigiri & chicken karaage on the side with a nice bottle of sake. Total bill came out to $220 which isn't the worst. Would I go again? Absolutely!

Wow. Just absolutely incredible. My experience was honestly better than when I went to Japan. The quality of fish was unmatched, and the chefs were so skilled, professional, and helpful. I would come here every day if I could, truly.

**Sushi Ota - A Disappointing Experience** I visited Sushi Ota, encouraged by its impressive 4.5-star rating, but unfortunately, I left underwhelmed. Given the high price point, I expected top-notch quality, but the fish didn't meet my expectations. Both the specialty and general rolls were poorly constructed and the presentation was sloppy. On the bright side, the miso soup and salad were quite tasty, and the service was kind and attentive. However, for anyone considering dining here, be prepared to spend over $200 for a sushi experience that, in my opinion, doesn't justify the cost. I wouldn't recommend it for those looking for high-quality sushi at this price point.

My husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary at Sushi Ota, and it was an unforgettable experience. We secured reservations for the opening time, and despite it being busy, the service was impeccable. We started with some nigiri, and the quality of the fish was the best we've ever had. The miso soup was delightful, and the seaweed salad was fresh and flavorful. To top it all off, we enjoyed Wagyu nigiri, which was an extraordinary end to our meal. It was a great night out, and we're already thinking of making this a yearly tradition. I had visited once before with my dad, so it was special to introduce my husband, who spent some time growing up in Japan with his military family, to such exquisite sushi. Highly recommend Sushi Ota for any special occasion or if you simply want to enjoy top-notch sushi in San Diego!

Finally came back after 2 years and still literally the best sushi place i've ever been to, and ive been to alot. the quality of their fish is incomparable! its a small restaurant so i recommend making a reservation; we had a reservation at 6:30 on a Sunday and they immediately seated us when we checked in. service: good, waiter was extremely sweet, she checked up on us multiple times. food came out quickly sushi: me and my bf opted for the omakase (chef's choice) - $54 amazing wow! as delicious as i last remembered. Each piece had a unique flavor but fish quality was so fresh for all of them. Rice to fish ratio was also good. There were some pieces that were recommended to be eaten without soy sauce. We got miso soup before our sushi came out which was hot and delicious! We also got an order of the yellowtail ($10) and otoro ($20) on the side. It was definitely a splurge but so worth it! The otoro was so delicious, literally melts in your mouth! Such an amazing experience each time! Overall, 10/10 dinner.
As good as I remember it from back in the day.
Solid nigiri, sashimi, rolls. Very high quality and great service. Reservations are nearly impossible but worth trying.
A million stars! Best sushi I've ever ever had.
It's in a very small unassuming parking lot across from a Planned Parenthood. I try to go every time I am in San Diego.
Don't get me wrong, the fish is good.
I've tried Combo B and a bit of sashimi. But I do not understand the hype around this place. I've gone multiple times, and maybe I'd go again, but it's not the best I've ever had- not sure why I've heard so many people say it is. Btw, you gotta book your reservations at least a couple weeks in advance, and I've never seen a walk-in. The price of the combos are good, and the staff are really nice and professional. The seating area is also really calm, with beautiful lighting.
Bummer.
After taking a break from Sushi Ota because food quality had changed, we decided to give Sushi Ota another chance last night. We were disappointed.. again. The sushi rolls fell apart and the rice left a lingering vinegar taste. Their quality is way down AND their prices also went up since we were last there. I don't think we will return. We're sad. There was a time we craved this place :(
The best sushi I think I've had.
My dining partner, who has spent a lot of time in Japan, remarked that it was on par with what he experienced in Tokyo. The sushi and sashimi melts in your mouth -- absolutely incredible. I really enjoyed the caterpillar roll, which I normally don't order, but my dining partner did and I definitely will order it again. At other places it has seemed to me like a glorified california roll -- not the case at Ota. The eel really was apparent and the sauce drizzle was delicious. Even the soy sauce tasted really delicate -- not sure if they brew/ferment it themselves? In any case, I was impressed. Definitely make a reservation in advance! They book up quickly and several days out.
Highly recommend you try this place.
Excellent options and the food is fresh. Staff was extremely attentive and friendly. Be prepared to wait or make reservations in advance. There is a reason it's busy. Very chic style made me feel like I was in Tokyo.
Spectacular ambience and service.
The sushi looked spectacular and tasted the same. My son said it was his favorite sushi so far and I have to agree.

I love sushi and this place had some good rolls but it was kind of a hit or miss. Some were delicious and others were subpar. We had to get a reservation and had high expectations because of all of the great reviews. Overall it was nice to experience once but we probably wouldn't come back unless it was a special occasion because the ambiance was very nice.
Something new and good, even if carryout
I showed up early, no reservation so I wasn't surprised that they told me no openings, but that was because I was solo. They had openings if I was a party of 2 or more. There were even spots at the head sushi bar, but for all I know they were reserved already. Once I asked if they did she said no and walked away. A few minutes later another lady came and told me thirty minutes which is fine, but i decided from that first interaction I'd just order to go. So if solo, make a reservation. Everyone there was loving their food so I thought worth a try. I got the uni (2 pieces) and the salmon egg (2 pieces). I think it was about 40 dollars total. Both listed as market so I was unsure till I paid. I have never tried either before so I can't really comment on quality or taste but the rice was perfect, and it turns out a kind of like both in a way. I would go back, with a reservation, and hope everyone was a nice as they were after that initial greeting, as it appeared they typically are.
Great sushi and sashimi!
Excellent sushi and sashimi. I would have given this place five stars except their hot foods (such as teriyaki and tempura) were just ok. Their sashimi and sushi were five stars however. Friendly staff and very clean space and bathrooms.
Simply one of the best sushi bars
This is one of the best sushi bars I’ve ever eaten. I’ve been eating at sushi bars for 55 years and the experience was just incredible. My wife and I ended up eating there three nights in a row while visiting La Jolla. I could just keep repeating this for the rest of my review, because any details I give are not really as important as the fact that the service was incredible and the food is incredible. If you are in the area, I highly recommend this restaurant and I often dream of going back there. I have a joke with my wife that we should just fly to La Jolla so we can eat there again! Highly recommended. Good luck getting a reservation.
Sushi Day Care
Without question, the food is outstanding. Simply the best. Exceptional. Words do not describe, etc. etc. etc. And the service - same. Over the top. Efficient. Professional. Courteous and respectful. Why not five stars? For ambiance, this place is ... ambiance challenged. It's in a downtrodden area, simply a storefront next to a downscale convenience store that caters to San Diego's downtrodden (read - lots of alcohol/drug derelicts). Dodge the shady characters in the parking lot - the food is well worth it - but no right-minded person would ever venture into the parking lot, were it not for the food. Just hope that your car will not be up on blocks when you return. Inside, minimal decor, and not much to diffuse the sound. IMPORTANT - either have a reservation, or you're SOL. Fortunately, both times, we've had reservations. But the table choice is a crap shoot, assigned by the iron fisted front-of-house dictator. The table is critical, since all but a few are very close together. You better enjoy your neighbors, or your dining experience could be painful. Meaning - have you ever dined in the middle of a day care center? No? Well, here's your chance. We're not sure what toddlers eat sushi, but both times that we have been, the place seems like a toddler day care center. Strollers, toddlers, screaming babies - you name it. Meaning, this fine dining experience turns into Chuck E Cheese. Technically, that's not the restaurant's fault - if Karen and Biff want to bring young Bryce to the sushi restaurant, then strap the lad to the stroller and roll him in. Who wouldn't want to enjoy their $$$ushi roll with a healthy dose of screaming baby and smelly diaper? Maybe next time, we'll bring some noise-cancelling headphones. Because the food really is worth it - it's that good. Maybe, just maybe however, the front dictator could try a bit harder to space those seeking a quiet, peaceful meal, from The Baby.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome
to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
