The Fat Duck Maidenhead Reviews from The Last Year
Anniversary dinner
My husband and I celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary at the Fat Duck. We arrived a little early and the doorman kept us busy while we waited for our table to become available; he took our photo in front of Heston’s coat of arms and took our belongings while we went for a walk in a lovely village of Bray. Once we were seated, we were asked if we ate everything and given wine menu to explore. Please note you will be eating strong horseradish dishes and snails so beware in case you have a more delicate palette. We decided to go for a Discovery Wine tasting at £190 per person. The wines started with a martini (alongside fourth dish). We ordered two glasses of champagne to proceed the wine flights as I find it a much more pleasant way to start your dinner. All dishes were interesting, used highest quality ingredients and tasted good. They failed however to deliver wow factor which I expected from the Fat Duck. The food might have been cutting edge 10 years ago but is no more. There were also aspects of service I thought needed improving: - the restaurant advertises their storytellers, no one tried to get in touch with us ahead of our booking and we found very little storytelling on a day. Menu cards were simply placed in front of us, to read at leisure - there is no consistency in service, each dish is delivered by someone else which makes for a less personal experience - wine match was hit and miss, to the point we asked for wines to be swapped at the end, as they were not to our liking (first time we’ve ever had to do that in Michelin star restaurant). Overall we had a lovely evening but won’t be rushing to go back.
Outstanding
When a venue such as this has a certain reputation, along with 3 Michelin stars, there is always a nagging fear that you might end up wondering what all the fuss is about. Well I’m delighted to report, that in our unanimous opinion, the reputation and stars are fully deserved. (And as an aside I am at a complete loss to understand how anyone can award just 1/5 fwiw). It’s expensive yes, not at all pretentious , and what an experience! Some of the dishes do challenge your mind, but that is half of the point. For us it was 4 hours of culinary heaven, with food and flavour combinations you just won’t find anywhere else. Eleven courses, some simple, some intricate, all bursting with flavour and even those few that didn’t meet one of the four of our tastes, we finished everything and appreciated the work that had gone into creating each dish. Service was impeccable, with the focus all about the food. In closing a stunning afternoon, that not only met, but exceeded expectations. Thank you.
The Fat Duck should concentrate on improving the food and service and hire a real chef to cook.
The Fat Duck is, in my experience, one of the most misleading and overrated restaurants in the world. The high prices only lead to the highest disappointment. Let me elaborate: The ceiling is too low, making the dining room feel like a cellar with poor air circulation. You can smell the breath of the person at the next table, and after three hours, it feels suffocating. The service is poor. The staff behaved like robots, reciting details about each dish so quickly that we couldn't understand them. We had to ask them to repeat the information for all 11 dishes. The restaurant seems unable to afford a proper chef, as it appears the waiters are preparing the food, relying on gimmicks like hydrogen-air. The quality of the food is comparable to any average restaurant in London. The fourth dish, "Taste of Sound of the Oceans," tasted like sand from the beach. All 11 dishes were poorly made, yet we were still charged a £198 service fee. Instead of confusing guests with incomprehensible, robotic stories about each dish, the restaurant should focus on the quality of the food. The £85 cake was awfully made. We were served poor-quality wine recommended by the restaurant. While this isn't the waiter's fault, it feels like the owner is selling cheap wine at Michelin three-star prices. Many people are too shy or too proud to share their honest thoughts. Given that each guest pays more than £500 (including the service charge) for their meal, they don't want to admit they've been fooled. In summary, The Fat Duck should concentrate on improving the food and service and hire a real chef to cook.
A sensational Sensorium
No words can describe the experience, the food, service and every thing that accompanied the meal made it extraordinary. Absolutely loved the meal we had at The Fat Duck. The non alcoholic drink pairing were brilliant. Each course was a masterpiece served with precision and flair second to none.
Unforgettable
A few of the dishes served as part of The Sensorium, having seen so much of Heston on TV, seemed very familiar. This just added to the experience. The service was quite possibly the best I can remember. One note: if you are not used to paying a service charge, you might be surprised at the small bill at the end of the meal - even if you have pre-paid online. Given our experience, this was something we were happy to pay. An unforgettable lunch.
Laughable rubbish
What an outdated pile of pretentious rubbish playing on Hestons name. We arrived at 7:30 looking forward to some fantastic food. By 9:30 the only course that was remotely pleasant to eat was the bread! The size of some of the dishes were laughable. Our bill came to £980 which included two modest bottles which we didn’t finish and were not offered to take it away. In hindsight we should have paid more attention to the “terrible” reviews and the lack of response from the management - how arrogant. I would highly recommend NOT to dine in this rip off restaurant it’s nothing more than a gimmick.
Third visit, first time for Christmas menu. Magnificent.
It was our third visit to The Fat Duck and the experience was, as ever, exceptional. It was the first time we had been there for the Christmas menu. Even by the standards of the Fat Duck, the lunch was magnificent, all the more special as we visited on my wife's birthday. We will definitely return; it's a dining experience like no other.
SENSational dining experience!
SENSational dining experience at Fat Duck! This season's menu is called "Sensorium". How sight, and sound can affect taste! Definitely worth the trip!
Great show - not much magic!
Great show - not much magic! On Thursday 14th March we had lunch at The Fat Duck, We were a group of six. The food was interesting, the service and team were very good. The waiting staff demonstrated how good table service should be, they were very knowledgeable and presented the food well. An important element for us was a couple of dietary requirements, which included one member of our party who is in the early stages of pregnancy. These were dealt with exceptionally well on arrival and throughout the meal – amazing attention to detail. However, the magic which I had hoped for was in limited supply. I had heard stories from friends who had visited before, of how, using a variety of ingredients, culinary magic would happen before your eyes. Sadly, this was not my experience. The only magic was the first course the Nitroaperitif. The show was great, and whoever imagined and constructed the presentation has done a great job. Yes, the food was beautifully prepared and presented. The quality of the ingredients was probably the best available. The team presenting and serving the food did a great job. However, for £275 per person, this was an expensive experience. In addition, coffee and tea were extra and there was a discretionary 12.5% service charge. I was looking forward to the magic that I believed Heston Blumental at The Fat Duck had bought to the culinary world, but I was disappointed. In my opinion, at £275 per person, without drinks, without tea or coffee, this is an extremely expensive experience which I will not be partaking of again, I was disappointed. Another element, possibly out of the control of the restaurant team, was the loud and in appropriate behaviour and language of another table close by. In conclusion, it is sometime since I had the opportunity of visiting a three-star Michelin restaurant. In my opinion, my previous experience exceeded my experience at The Fat Duck.
It’s about the people.
Wonderful experience. The international team are fantastic. Service first class. Thank you Heston - fabulous job. Well worth the trip from Perth!
Incredible
On many occasions over the years, I have visited the top ten restaurants in the world, sometimes visiting three Michelin starred restaurants in one day (7 stars in one day) I will literally fly anywhere in the world to eat at the very best. I have flown to San Diego just to try a burger at hodad's, flown to Chicago to eat at a three star, flown to Tel-Aviv to eat at a two star vegan restaurant, flown to Memphis to eat the very best BBQ in the world..I love food It's been my passion, hobby, love and obsession to eat at amazing restaurants for over 25 years, I've been able to do this as a result of working and saving hard. During these amazing 25 years, I have visited the Fat Duck over 20 times. The food at the Duck never disappoints and always amazes me.. there is something so very special at the Duck.. innovation and cooking at it's very best. Although I have been to many other three star restaurants all over the world, the Fat Duck is still my favourite. The staff are unbelievably good, really fantastic and always make us feel so very special when we dine there. I'm looking forward to dining there again soon ❤️
Simply the best culinary experience we've had
My wife and I visited the Fat Duck for my 50th birthday and the experience lived up to everything we expected. From bumping in to one of the staff in Bray for directions, to being welcomed in a relaxing and friendly manner, the food, service and ambiance was exceptional. The Sensorium tasting menu was innovative, exciting and most importantly fun, allowing us to experience new things we had never tasted or experienced before. Bravo!
Amazing experience... but there is a but
Going to this restaurant is an event - and it is truly unique. Such a clever culinary experience. If you have the chance then do go. We did have a grumble however - some of the explanations of the culinary creations by the clearly enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff were so long, that but the time they'd finished, in several cases the hot food was warm at best. We found ourselves watching the food cool for three or four minutes while the staff went into long and sometimes rambling monologues. One dish was pretty stone cold by the time all the intricate details were fully explained. The portions are quite small (for obvious reasons) so they do cool off quickly, and the ambient room temperature isn't overly hot. We thought about complaining, but decided it wouldn't have really helped, and would have spoiled the ambience. However, it has definitely been one of our talking points with all our friends who were excited to hear about it.
Once in a lifetime experience
This was a bucket list essential for me and it did not disappoint. My husband took me for my 50th birthday and the staff were all aware and made me feel like a VIP all evening. The story tellers were passionate and informative. The food was sublime. We went to the wine cellar and had a tour of the kitchen. We ate our sweets the next day so continued the experience at home. Anyone who is considering coming here should 100% do it, you won’t be sorry.
Wife's 60th birthday lunch. on another culinary planet
Not three star without a reason . Went here for my Wife's birthday celebration, the whole vibe was very chilled although obviously there were some seriously wealthy people here. I won't go too much into the food as I wish I hadn't researched so much before we went and this slightly messed the surprise . Suffice to say, every dish in the tasting menu was a complete surprise and delight. As usual in these top Michelin starred places you are able to have some good banter with the front of house (contrary to a lot of peoples expectations) . Very expensive but you need to come here at least once in your lifetime
Simply amazing
Just a wonderful experience and great staff. We had the Xmas Menu, the food was superb, staff chatty, not stuffy as some Michelin starred restaurants are and you smile all the through the experience. Treat yourself, a great box ticked

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
