Red Paper Clip New York - Buy Reservations

I really wanted to love Red Paper Clip, it was inventive and would recommend my friends try it once but don't know that I'd go back. Everything brioche - sort of an elevated breakfast sandwich? For me, the trout and toppings were perfect but the layer of egg yolk was too much. Not just indulgent but sickeningly so to have a whole layer of fat. Tasted good but less might be more with this one to make it better. The Maitake mushrooms dish was quite tasty. The sauce on the bottom was good but the layers on top didn't blow me away. Mushroom tempura really. The chicken sandwich was the real roller coaster. The bun was one of the best bread dishes I've ever had for flavor - a rich scallion brioche with so much depth, but quite greasy. And the fried chicken in the sandwich... it was 50% breading. Crispy but fell apart and took away from the flavor. Created a good look but I think detractor.

My friends and I stumbled upon Red Paper Clip while waiting on a table for another bar around the area. The sign is super cute - It was literally just a neon red paper clip and nothing else.The restaurant had a bar so we sat there. I liked the ambiance, clean and cozy, and the bar display was well placed. I got the Pineapple Express (rum, pineapple, lime, and ginger beer) and it was pretty refreshing! My friends also really liked their drinks as well. I enjoyed my short time here and glad I got to check out this place.

absolutely loved everything that came out of this tiny kitchen. oyster trout roe toast truffle agnolotti lobster 3 ways maitake mushrooms in broth and you have to augment the prix fix with their burger and chicken sandwich. met the chef who seemed genuinely excited to meet customers and hear how they were enjoying his original creations. plates are creative AND delicious

The staff was friendly though I would say pretty casual for a Michelin restaurant which is pretty welcome. I found the food to be alright in general but not worth it for the price with one person in the group ordering some more from the a la carte menu afterwards. To drink from their interesting cocktail menu, I got the Betamax with bourbon, bitters, and cardamaro. The latter is an amaro made with red wine, cardoon, and blessed thistle and as per other reviews, this was the obvious choice and it was quite delicious and worth it for $16. Nice bitterness and sweetness. There was a bunch of other cocktails at the same price which other people enjoyed as well as beer from the local Interboro Spirits and Ale (in which I would recommend the Ambassador if you're a fan of Stouts also being the most worth it for $10.)They gave us two amuse bouche to start out with, a Potato with crème fraiche and beluga caviar and an Oyster with yuzu kosho mignonette. The potato was a small rich bite with some balance from the caviar. The oyster was briny and the yuzu added some good sourness and it worked to wet the appetite. We were also given the 阿嬤's Cucumber with Sichuan spice, sesame, mirin, rice wine vinegar, and "tzatziki" which I believe is on the appetizer menu. This was a unique take on the usual Szechuan appetizer especially with the yogurt sauce though the portion was pretty small. It was alright.The first dish that arrived was their signature, the Everything Brioche with cured trout, miso yolk, and trout roe. As per the term everything, the brioche had basically everything bagel seasoning which I'm using not that big a fan of (as I don't like caraway much) but in this case it worked well. The smoky trout paired well with the egg yolk though I would say the egg flavor reminded me more of an ajitsuke tamago which I also didn't mind as I love ramen eggs. This was one of the more successful dishes and of all the dishes were as well flavored and well balanced as this, I would likely forgive the high prices.The next course was the Maitake Mushrooms with Japanese mushrooms, rosemary, and tempura. The mushrooms which are one of my favorite varieties were prepared both fried and roasted and had a mushroom sauce. The tempura batter was delicate and the small roasted mushroom was tasty though I would have liked a bit more of both. The sauce had a good earthiness and richness and went well.We then received the two pasta dishes; the XLB Agnolotti with black truffle, pork, and ginger as well as the Cavatelli with scallop bonito, nori, parmigiano. The former was dusted with a large amount of truffle and they had an alright texture though I would say that the pork inside was a bit overpowered by the other ingredients as there was almost too much earthiness from all the truffle. The cavatelli was rich and was cooked alright (slightly gummy) and suffered from similar issues. The parmigiano overpowered any scallop or nori flavor and overall this was the first of a few less successful dishes.We then received our final Savory dish, the Lobster Three Ways with the three ways being salt & pepper, sticky rice, and miso beurre blanc. The miso beurre blanc was easily my favorite of three. The sweetness (I believe white/shiro miso) added an extra sweetness to the already tender and sweet lobster and honestly a full plate of this would have been better than the other preparations. The salt & pepper was alright in terms of flavor but the lobster was fried too much which ruined the texture of the delicate meat. The sticky rice was the weakest of the dishes. There was a bit of fried (why) lobster inside but it was hard to taste with all the sticky rice which lacked any other ingredients. It was bland and I think some Cantonese sausage/lap cheong would go a long way to elevate the flavor.For dessert, they had the 898 Squash instead of was listed on the menu. Consisting of cranberry sorbet, 5 spice ice cream, and marshmallow, this also didn't really work that well. The sorbet was nicely tart but the squash was essentially turned into half of a muffin and the ice cream lacked the listed spice. The marshmallow was nicely presented attached to the side of the plate but it didn't go well if anything outside of the squash.The meal started off strong with the first appetizer and the second appetizer but from then on, I would say the dishes lacked balance and flavor which hurts even more when the portion sizes are this small. Both of the pasta dishes were overwhelmed by one ingredient (and didn't exactly have good textures) while the lobster was only successful in one of the three ways and the squash dessert just didn't work. I would complain less but at these prices and with these portion sizes, it's hard not to. A person also had a burger after which was presented nicely but lacked good flavor as well. Mid 2 lowered down.

Similar to the review below, chose Red Paper Clip Valentines Day dinner. Before booking I looked on both Resy and their Website to see if there was any type of special menu; both indicated it was the normal $90 tasting menu. My partner is also pescatarian, which would only impact one dish on the normal tasting menu (we indicated as such in our reservation). Once seated, we were presented with the Valentines Day menu which was $175 per person. Really felt like were duped into a greater than 100% upcharge - since were already seated, can't exactly go out and find another reservation. When we asked, we were told the normal tasting menu was not an option. Further, this menu featured more meat and the chef/team hadn't made ay allowances for my partner being pescatarian. As a result my partner had to miss out on 2 of the courses. The food was good, nothing to write home about, but solid. Unfortunately the service was extremely slow (but nice) and the meal clocked in around 3 hours. Overall a disappointing and expensive experience.

We chose Red Paper Clip for our Valentines Day dinner because we heard great things about it, but our experience was very disappointing. Service was backed up by over an hour. Our seating was at 8:15. We arrived at 8:05 or so and were told to wait at the bar. Soon, the waiting area started getting backed up with other patrons who had arrived only to find that all the tables were not only full but still in the middle of their meal. The staff provided us with free drinks, which was nice, but we ended up waiting at the bar for about an hour before getting seated. I ordered the cocktail Better Luck Tomorrow, which was full of small pieces of ice (from the shaker) that made it unpleasant to drink. The flavor itself was just all right, but based on this I decided not to try another.Once seated, we were presented with the Valentines Day menu, which to my recollection was not on the website. The normal tasting menu is $90pp, but the Valentines menu was $175pp. We weren't too bothered by it because the menu frankly looked stunning on paper and we were open to giving it a try. The meal started off well, but unfortunately the quality steadily deteriorated.Caviar/oyster two ways - Both delicious, but some of the tables were served with oysters that had a "smoky" presentation element (dry ice), whereas ours did not.Everything Brioche - Delicious as wellMaitake - TastyCavatelli / XLB agnolotti - these two dishes came out together. The black truffle didn't marry particularly well with the agnolotti, but we enjoyed both.Sweetbread congee - this is described on the menu as a "risotto" but it was too dry to be risotto and the dish lacked dimension in flavor.Lobster three ways - the miso beurre blanc was amazing, and the salt and pepper fried lobster was also good. However, the sticky rice was quite tasteless.Beef "Wellington" - The meat was tasty but very fatty. The scallion pancake did not resemble a scallion pancake (did not have any pastry layers and wasn't crispy; resembled bread that was turned into a scallion garlic bread of some kind). The greens and sunchokes failed to freshen up the heaviness of the meat.Klondike bar - Our dessert was half-melted ice cream they took straight out of a fridge (we were able to see the kitchen from our table), with sauce that was messily dripped into the bowl. Can't comment on the taste as we didn't have the appetite to try it. I took the photo pretty much as soon as they set the plate down.Although our original reservation was 8:15, we didn't leave the restaurant till 11:30. The food, service, and overall experience were certainly not worth the $400+ we paid for this meal. During the meal, we heard another table ask about why everything was so backed up, and one of the servers explained that patrons started showing up late to their reservations. I think this hardly explains the sloppiness of the food, the long waits between dishes, and the sporadic service. I am sorry to say that we will not be coming back.

The food and prices left a lot to be desired. At $90.00 for a "tasting menu" it really was just a taste. My wife. All of 110 pounds left hungry and we ended up having to stop for food after eating a $320.00 dinner. (Bottle of wine included in price) All dishes were served at temps that I would consider acceptable but not straight out of the kitchen. These dishes seemed mass produced on a line and shuffled out of the kitchen like a factory. While I appreciate this it wasn't in a timely manner either. All in all. It was a great place with a good ambiance but don't come hungry or expecting to be full when leaving. Amuse boucheThe oyster with yuzu kosho mignonette was a great starter. Fresh, citrusy, briny, and full of flavor. The cucumber dish was simply put. flat and lacked any sort of seasoning or flavor. I'd rather pay $9.00 for the ippudo cucumber. Not worth eating. The potato with caviar and a fried crisp was delicious but served at a just barely acceptable temperature. I completely understand they need to prepare these in advanced however they need to focus more on the quality and temps of dishes rather than mass production. The everything brioche had cured trout, a miso yolk as well as trout roe. This may possibly be one of the top dishes on the menu. Simple, elegant, no frills. Simply put a must try if you like caviar, lox and all things of that nature. The "tempura" Maitaki mushroom with the other mushroom medley was okay. A bit greasy and served at a temperature again. Not warm enough for something deep fried. The wife enjoyed it. I found it not memorable. The cavatelli reminded me of a uni pasta dish from NR which is a good thing. Scallop bonito is a great flavor and is full of umami goodness. I recommend this dish. The xlb agnolotti was served different from what I've seen. No shaved truffles on top of ours and instead replaced with the winter truffles (truffles sitting in liquid in a jar) there was little to no truffle aroma or taste. More of a presentation piece than anything. The agnolotti themselves were delicious but again. Not memorable. Lobster three ways. The miso burre blanc was great but nothing special. The salt and pepper claw was the freshest and served fairly hot. The lobster sticky rice which sounds amazing had poor execution and flavor. Relying heavily on crispy garlic and onion chips. It was just flat in flavor. Last the desert. Fried sage made this dish as did the other flavors from the cranberry. All in all. I feel that this place is over hyped, over charging, and just not a great value for what you get. A lot may ask. Is it worth trying once? Unfortunately my answer will be a resounding no.

My thing about Asian fusion, as in when Asian food is fused with Italian, Mexican, American, or whatever, is that I'm always left feeling like I wish I'd just had one or the other cuisine. (This does not apply to pan-asian food.) But Red Paper Clip looked promising so I gave it a shot. Came for dinner and did the a la carte menu. My friend and I ordered:+ Chinita colada + College dropout cocktail + Pineapple Express cocktail+ Sichuan carpaccio+ Maitake+ Everything brioche+ Cavatelli + XLB agnolotti+ Hot chicken sandwich The drinks were great, with the colada being both my friend's and my favorite, and the standout dishes were the maitake and cavatelli. But some of the flavor combos didn't quite land, and the chicken could have been crispier. As I predicted, I'd prefer to go for either Sichuan or Italian food elsewhere.

Oysters were not pictured but was also comped. Overall portions were well presented. Drinks were good. Waiters may be a little too attentive bordering rushing. Kept asking if we were finished even tho we still had food on the plates . Other that minor issue, we enjoyed our meal.

As people have said, look for the neon red paper clip outside. The chef came out and spoke with us . He said he was a chef at Alinea in Chicago which is accounts for his beautiful presentation . The restaurant was very noisy . It was fairly packed on a Wednesday night. The service was very good. From the tasting menu , I loved the oyster. I wish I had more than one. They were beautifully displayed on a pewter like dish on a bed of kelp .I loved the Brioche . It looked beautiful and the taste was great. I liked the lobster 3 way. As we progressed I thought my little bites were not filling me up. Then we had fried chicken on a bun and burger on a bun. We carved that up to share . This filled me up but I felt it was out of place for this tasting and I was not impressed by it . The dessert was pretty . Some of the dishes were a bit too salty and interfered with other flavors. All and all it was a good experience. I am glad I went.

The food at his very small and worn restaurant is worthy of its one-star Michelin. rating. The Oysters, cauliflower, cavatelli, agnolotti, and lobster were all excellent. The food was so good we wanted to order the double double burger and chicken sandwich. The food is not worthy of the setting. The restaurant looks like a cheap neighborhood restaurant which it is not. Service is good, but spotty. The waiters do know how to explain the dishes. Ours had a limited English vocabulary. In the end we were happy since it meant we could more likely get a reservation here again. .
